Albion need Wembley repeat: Jonno

greening22.jpgAlbion captain Jonathan Greening today demanded a repeat of the Baggies’ Wembley performance when they kick-off the final phase of their promotion-chasing campaign tomorrow.

Albion travel to Blackpool knowing a win could take them top, depending on Stoke’s result tonight

The skipper reckons they will reach the Premier League if they can match the performance level of Saturday’s heart-wrenching FA Cup semi-final defeat to Portsmouth.

“Blackpool is a massive game,” said Greening, whose side are the only promotion-chasers in action tomorrow.

“There’s only a few games left and we need to make our game in hand count.

“If we put in a good performance like we did against Portsmouth we’ll hopefully get a few goals and get the three points.”

Greening left Wembley on Saturday describing the manner of Albion’s defeat to Pompey as “gut-wrenching” after a disputed goal from former team-mate Kanu ended their dream of a return to the FA Cup final after 40 years.

But the captain insisted they could move on to the concluding weeks with pride and confidence after dominating Premier League Pompey for long spells.

“We wanted to put a good performance on and we did,” said Greening.

“We played some good stuff but it wasn’t to be. It was our second Wembley appearance and our second 1-0 loss, so it’s not really good for us at the moment.

“In the first half they couldn’t get near us really and in the second half we got more of the ball.

“We played some good stuff but every player they’ve got in their team is a quality international and it shows in some of the things that Niko Kranjcar and Lassana Diarra did.

“We set our stall out to pass the ball and we passed and moved.”

I think you won in Cardiff. Don’t think you’ve been to Wembley which any half informed supporter would probably know.

What! Did you break in one night for a kick about??
Or if you are talking about 2003, I know it can be a little difficult for some of you Dingles to tell the difference between signs saying Wales and Wembley.

No cardiff knocked us out the fa cup and they are in the final?! no shame there as we won there in the league and you only drew. albion knocked the ball around nice but apart from the great effort that hit the bar you didnt look like scoring whatsoever? i think you will finish in the playoffs but quite frankly are not good enough to go up automatically? funny how terrywembleybogie is keeping quiet!

Jonah don’t try being clever. He isn’t distinguishing between the old and new Wembley is he. Yes I iknow you won at the old Wembley too so don’t start banging on about that.

And if you want to talk about the new wembley, yes we’ve not been there yet, but your record there is nothing to shout about is it. 2 appearances….no goals, 3 hours and counting on the pitch. I thought you lot scored for fun…..isn’t that the Mowbray way????

If you go up this season you need a self enforced exodus starting with Greening.

I thought you gave a good account of yourselves but it did show up a general lack of premiership quality across the board and that would have been the same for most championship sides.

You look at your squad and you see a very competent championship team but you don’t see much premiership potential especially with premiership has beens like Greening and Philips (yes I know he can score in the championship).

I think Mowbray will probably get you up but based on Saturday’s performance to sustain a premiership run is going to require a fairly radical and expensive overhaul - we’re talking £30 to £40m at least.

Just at work recovering from the best weekend of my life!!
Went down on the 06:12 train from snow hill, straight to the green man in Wembley, which was quality. Having a bit of banter with the pompey fans, sunk about 8 pints and then made my way to wembley. I am gutted that we lost but it was still a brilliant day…after the match it was back to the green man, and then off home. Got fed up with been on the train so about 10 of us got off went to the nearest boozer and had a few more tots!! We were in a village in the middle of nowhere, looked like Emmerdale, you can imagine the locals reaction!!! In the end had em all getting their pictures took with us.

Loved it, met some cracking people and sung me head off all day and night!!!

OK TO SIMPLIFY THINGS.. WEMBLEY, CARDIFF OR ANYWHERE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER, PUT WOLVES IN ANY KIND OF FINAL AND WE WIN IT..

OK APART FROM THE 1939 CUP FINAL WHEN WE LOST TO POMPEY..BUT THAT YEAR MOST OF OUR FIRST TEAM WERE IN THE ENGLAND SQUAD IN EUROPE TAKING ON GERMANY IN THE 2 WORLD WAR.

BUT WE’VE NEVER BEEN BEATEN SINCE. LEAGUE CUP, F.A CUP, SHERPA VAN, OOHH THE LISTS ENDLESS.

Southbank (15) - you forgot to point out the finals we won at Fallowfield in 1893 and Crystal Palace in 1908. What a history, winning stuff here, there and everywhere - in style of course!!!

You should print that 3 word warning at the beginning of all your postings.
    13 Clapham.
While you have a right to your opinion. In a radio interview on Friday Harry Redknapp said. ‘I think this Albion squad would not have been in relegation danger in this years Prem.’ It’s all about opinions. Hope we have a chance to find out next year.

Loved this posting. Isn’t this really what football is all about. Unless you’re a glory hunter that is.

17 The real bully. I had to laugh at this joke. Hello nutter alert! I’m sure that’s not what he meant but lol.

  19. Clapham Wolf said:

    17. Harry is indeed entitled to his opinion. He is also entitled to compliment a team he’s just beaten in the FA Cup semi-final to take the edge off it.

I don’t think any West Brom fan worth their salt would argue with the fact that with the current squad you would struggle to survive a season in the premiership.

That’s not a sniping wolves fan talking, it’s a reality that statistics prove.

it is what its all about, after Colchester last week and Wembley cant wait to be in the Smethwick for Saturday now, its been a cracking season to spend at the Hawthorns. Was half thinking about going to Blackpool until i looked at my bank account of £2.25, oh well i get paid in 2 weeks ….it was worth it!!

The interview I referred to was on Friday, before the Semi. Just for good measure he was equally complimentary after the game. I’m not taking for granted that we’d do well in the Prem, just like I’m not taking getting up for granted. The reason I think we might do well is the same one that might stop us getting there. It’s all about the style of football. Ours doesn’t grind out results in this division the way that Stoke’s or Hull’s does but their way is no good once you get up and you can’t develop a new style during the close season.
If we suceed in getting up I think a few teams, including your own may have a rethink for next season. I’m not trying to be smug or condescending and I know you are one of the ones on here who will give a measured response.
