Two goals from midfielder Ryan Taylor eased Wigan’s relegation woes and ensured Birmingham’s struggles at the Premiership basement continued.

Taylor struck with a goal in each half as Wigan dominated a tense encounter against a Birmingham side that had skipper Damien Johnson sent off for a first half foul on Wigan’s Keven Kilbane.

The home side were quickest out of the blocks and never dropped that tempo as Blues were made to look second best.

A superb run by the impressive Valencia created the opening goal, his cross blasted in by Taylor.

And Wigan scored the crucial second goal on 55 minutes as Taylor poked the ball home after a frantic goal-mouth scramble following another cross from Valencia.

The defeat leaves Blues in 17th place, four points ahead of Bolton in 18th.
