Walsall 2 Tranmere 1
Walsall’s first win in seven games drew them closer to the much coveted sixth place in League One.
The Saddlers have five games remaining to clinch the vital position and still have a game in hand on promotion rivals Tranmere and Oldham Athletic.
Saddlers captain Tommy Mooney referred to the game as a must win match in the week leading up to it.
And despite his first half penalty miss Walsall’s chances of championship football next season remain very much alive.

Good win for the lads. I hope we can use this and get some good results in the run in. I still dont think we will get into the play-offs (can anyone see past Leeds?) but if we can finish 7th or 8th then it will have been a great season. I’m thinking that a good run now will at least give us some momentum to take into next season so we dont start like we did this time!
Yes, 7th or 8th would be a good season….but it could have been better. One or two quality loan signings (a central defender and a striker) 2 months ago would have made all the difference. It would have added some freash impetus to the team and also have stimulated interest amongst supporters when we were generally disillusioned after the sale of Dan Fox and (particularly) Scott Dann. Oh and by the way, I don’t hold with all this “we’re punching above our weight” nonsense…if Wimbledon had thought that in the 80’s then they would never have made the First Division or won the FA Cup. Let’s show some ambition.
Saddlertd, I agree with you on the loan issue and indeed we should not have a ‘haven’t we done well’ mindset. Hopefully DD has some players in mind to spend some money on in the summer (whether this be 3 or 4 small cash offers i.e. 10-20k or for singing on fees/wages). We must build on this season and be serious promotion contenders next year.
