Albion 0 Portsmouth 1

Paul Robinson and Papa Bouba Diop

14.08: Full time and Albion deserved better but run out unlucky losers.

14.08: Albion get a last ditch corner, Kiely comes up for it…but Kim swings in a desperate cross and it’s headed away by the first man, and the final whistle goes.

14.07: Nugent fires over in the last minute of injury time and that looks like that.

14.03: Pressure from Albion at the end of normal time but no real chances, two crosses are too deep and it’s last chance saloon now.

Three minutes of stoppage time.

13.58: Good opprtunity for Albion, Gera’s low cross is met first time by Miller who sees his side-footed effort spin just round the post.

Was that the chance to force extra time?

13.57: Sub Nugent is gifted an opening by Albion but he shoots straight against Kiely.

13.54: The game opens up further and Albion are not out of it - but they have to find a way past James.

Pompey make another switch as Sean Davis enters the fray.

13.50: Action at both ends, first Mutari should make it 2-0 but shoots wide from 15 yards.

Then, Miller bursts clear down the left and waits to cross to the unmarked Phillips, but James reacts well and plucks the low ball out of the air before it can reach the Albion striker.

13.49: Third Albion substitution, Kim Do Heon is on.

13.48: Albion go close as Koren’s long range shot clips the bar. The midfielder gives a grimace, he knows that wasn’t far away.

13.45: Pompey changes it’s Baros off and the rarely seen species known as David Nugent is on.

13.43: Good spell of possession for Albion ends with Gera’s turn and shot but it flies over.

The Baggies are still seeing a lot of the ball - but Pompey look comfortable to let them play 50 yards from goal.

13.39: Baros is through on goal but his touch is a bit heeavy and gives Kiely the chance to smother.

The ex-Villa striker should have buried Albion there.

13.35: Double change for Albion: Miller and Brunt come on in place of Bednar and Gera.

Bednar looks disappointed to be hauled off.

13.32: Pompey are almost in again but a low cross is slid back to Krancjar and his shot skews horribly wide.

Mowbray has Miller on the bench, will we be seeing him shortly?

13.30: Test of Albion now. The Pompey fans are in fine voice and their side is very strong at the back.

13.29: Replays of the goal show a case for handball against Baros as he prepared to shoot. Albion won’t be happy with that.

perthbaggiesfan certainly thinks it was handball

13.28: GOAL Pompey take the lead.

Baros’ shot is parried well by Kiely, and with an Albion player running in he can only push it out again, but this time straight into the path of Kanu who stabbed home from six yards.

Portsmouth’s first real chance of the game, a sickener for Albion.

13.27: Harry Redknapp edges out of his technical area. The Pompey boss looks slightly fraught. Rightly so, as his team have made no impression on Albion in the first 55 minutes of this tie.
13.25: Mark Lawrenson: “I bet in the Championship West Brom have never had as much time and space as they are getting today”.

13.21: Baros almost gets in behind Albion but Robinson slides in and forces the ball out for a corner, which the Baggies clear.

Still plenty of space for both teams - but not in areas where they can hurt the opposition.

13.18: Players are back out on the pitch for the second half - and the noise level rises again.

13.05: PerthBaggieFan says: “First thing Gera needs to do in the break is change his studs, he’s slipped over about 4 times.”

13.02: Half time whistle blows. Albion will be happy but they will probably need to get behind the Pompey defence if they are to create better chances.

13.00: Stoppage time. Portsmouth are taking the game to Albion but not really creating many chances.

12.56: Kanu chests the ball on the edge of the box and lobs the ball over the Albion defenders, only for Baros to make a weak connection which goes straight to Kiely. The best chance of the half.

12.52: England keeper James fumbles a regular backpass, almost letting in Bednar. Villa fans who recall Wembley in 2000 and Liverpool supporters who saw the 1996 final will be predicting another disaster for the keeper.

12.50: Baros receives a long pass on the edge of the Albion box but is penalised for handball. He continues to shoot and is duly booked for kicking the ball. Tellingly, he does not complain.

12.45: Muntari has a free kick dead centre from 35 yards. He hits the target but its a comfortable save for Kiely, who has not been tested properly so far by the Premier League side.

12.40: Albion get a free kick in a dangerous position on the left in line with the area but cannot make anything from it. In the ensuing scramble, Gera skies a left footed chance. Albion seem willing to shoot from distance against ex-Villa keeper David James.

12.30: Both sides are knocking the ball long early to try to cause problems but neither can make anything of their efforts.

12.26: James hesitates as Albion send in a cross but it is too high for Phillips who cannot get a strong header.

12.24: Ex-Villa striker Baros chases after a promising long ball but cannot control it. Kiely clears.

12.22: Neat passing move by Albion sees Gera get a shot in from the edge of the box which James can only parry. Campbell clears.

12.19: Former Albion striker Kanu waltzes through the Baggies defence but cannot make his pass count. “One club man” Diarra is looking threatening for Pompey. Kevin Phillips fires over from distance at the other end. Not a bad start by either side.

12.16: We’re off. Early Albion pressure sees a pass to Bednar run through to the keeper as both sides settle in.

12.15: The Albion players go into their huddle. Albion will need to watch set-pieces, according to John Motson, as “Portsmouth are one of the tallest teams in the country”. Not when Jermaine Defoe plays, they aren’t. But he’s cup-tied.

12.14: Tony Mowbray takes his seat. His face gives nothing away, as usual.

12.13: The two teams are lining up. It’s time for Albion to meet their destiny.

12.09: Alan Shearer: “Portsmouth might just have a little bit too much for West Brom, but we know West Brom can score goals.”

12.03: Wembley is quickly filling up as fans take their seats. It’s a sea of blue and white hats, scarves, flags, face paint. Of course it’s blue and white in two different shades, Pompey’s that bit lighted than the Baggies dark blue.

11.57: More on the Albion team click Albion line-up revealed

11.55: Our man Steve Madeley says Mowbray’s line-up has not sprung any major surprises. Neil Clement was likely to play after impressing in midweek. Zoltan Gera will play on the right wing and James Morrison on the left.

11.49: Albion fans let us have your thoughts on that line-up?

11.47: Albion team: Kiely, Hoefkens, Albrechtsen, Clement, Robinson, Morrison, Greening, Koren, Gera, Phillips, Bednar.

Subs: Miller, Pele, Brunt, Danek, Do-Heon.

Portsmouth: James, Johnson, Campbell, Distin, Hreidarsson, Diarra, Diop, Muntari, Kranjcar, Kanu, Baros.

Subs: Ashdown, Lauren, Nugent, Davis, Pedro Mendes.

11.45: Only half an hour to kick off and most of the 33,000 Albion fans are in the ground. The atmosphere is really building on a cold, crisp day.

if this game is half as dramatic as Albion’s match last weekend we will be in for a treat. That was a 4-3 win over Colchester.

Just think Wolves fans you could have been playing Barnsley today in the second semi final, but you lost with a typical “stylish” performance at Cardiff in the 5th round. Not to mention you lost to the mighty Morecambe in the League Cup. When did you last have a decent cup run?
If the highlight of your season is once again watching the Albion being narrowly defeated in a big game, then who are the REAL losers around here?

Will the dingles stop invading our forum with there pathetic comments and worry about there own pathetic team.

I thought WBA were a lot better than i have seen from them in the league. I was at Wembley, and i think that the defence was a lot better and i thought Kiely deserves a lot of praise for his display. Shame we couldn’t win the game and we lost by a scrappy goal that in the end, should not have counted. Well, what do you expect from a villa reject? Baros will be branded a cheat for the rest of his career.

Can’t say that I’m disappointed that you lost but some of the comments from Wolves fans are frankly ridiculous. I thought you played some pretty decent stuff particularly in the first half but you never really hurt Pompey. I’d take the same on the 15th! Mostly though I’ve come on here to say - 50 - learn your own history. We lost at Wembley in the 1939 FA Cup Final to…Pompey.

The villa connection strikes with sickening aplomb.
If its not costing us 3 points against leicester (moore sending off) then its a pathetic hand ball unseen, that leads to a freak goal, from an ex villain called baros. Our defence stopped running, and kanu was gifted a free prod. The passing and movement even had ole harry admiring us—its good enough to grace the premiership, where it will be plied after our promotion. If only, as my missus said, miller had been bought on earlier. He had the pompey defence struggling to cope, and was unafrafd to run at them He should have scored from close in, and I nearly gasped in the stands when he missed. A team to be proud of. All the main media giants have given us praise. Well done you baggies, lets wait for the reaction against the 6 fixtures standing in our way, and the premiership.

Albion were extremely unlucky to lose, but as badly as pompey played, they still have Sol and Distin at the back, a formidable defence.

Shame you couldn’t carve out a few more chances than you did and I’m wondering if a couple of the players were slightly in awe of the occasion?

Still, the league has to be the priority and I’m hoping you can get automatic promotion and leave the wembley appearance to the Wolves!

Was there, so unlucky. Ime gutted! Great day though. Outplayed them, Koren off the bar summed it up. Baros was such a cheat & a blatant handball! Then the ref started givin them everythin & blowing whistle before even lettin us take corner at the end was a disgrace! Great day though. I used 2 like pompey fans & everyone these days goes on about there fans & crackin atmosphere they create but we completley outsung them. Just like the time we took 10k 2 their ground in 17k crowd which ime sure they have forgot about. Even there faces on coach after, (they looked more misarable than us!)All u heard was the same “play up pompey” but the people who really played up pompey was the media, sky sports did’nt stop talkin about how they were favourites. Even the wembley tannoy guy sounded like he was gonna join in celebratin with them,no commiserations 4 us, nothin!Just sad barnsley out, wanted them 4 cup after all they are just as big a club as portsmouth. So they can take the cup back 2 “fall apart fratton park”. All i can say is the premiership has a shock next season if we go up. Bring em on! Still Boingin!

Barnlsey played well at Wembley and had the same problem as Boggies - Could not score when it mattered - Pompey were there for the taking - and yet the players could not rise to the occassion!

Yes, us Wolves fans are taking the mickey (if the shoe was on the other foot so would you’re lot!)

Boggies loyal faithfull paid good money to go all the way to Wembley - face facts Boggie boys and girls YOUR PLAYERS LET YOU DOWN AGAIN!

Forget all this “We played a Prem team blah blah” - Pompey should have got a spanking but didnt! WHY?

Its alright your players talking about playing Prem teams every game next season - first they have got to get there; second - just hope you dont get into another play off final at Wembley! You score loads of goals against Championship teams - No matter what pretty football you play - If you dont score, even a crap Pompey on the day will win! (And did!)

Barnlsey played some good stuff against Cardiff - but the lad that missed their best goal opportunity is no more guilty than any of the Albion players who missed their chances - So what’s the difference?

Even with our obvious differences, It was sad to see an opportunity go begging against a Prem team - especially Good Old Arry! ;-)
