Birmingham City eased their relegation fears today with a 3-1 victory over Manchester City at St Andrew’s.

Mauro Zarate had struck for the second time in two games to give Birmingham a deserved half-time lead.

The on-loan Argentinian broke the deadlock after 39 minutes following a spell of almost relentless pressure by Alex McLeish’s side.

In the second half Zarate struck again to give the Blues a buffer but then Frank Quedrue gave away a penalty and Blues were on the back foot at 2-1.

However then striker Gary McSheffrey popped up to score and the St Andrew’s crowd breathed a sigh of relief as Alex McLeish’s men picked up three points to boost their survival chances for next season.
