Mick McCarthy today admitted a last-minute change of mind had blocked the Freddy Eastwood loan transfer to Championship neighbours Coventry.
The deal, which saw Coventry willing to commit to a permanent £1.5m purchase in the summer, collapsed in the final hours of yesterday’s loan deadline day to trigger a furious response from their boss Chris Coleman.
He accused Wolves of “appalling” behaviour in pulling out of the deal, claimed Eastwood still wanted to go to Coventry and labelled Wolves’ reasons for hanging on to the 24-year-old as “ridiculous.”
But McCarthy hit back today saying: “There was a request from Coventry, and from a number of clubs, to take Freddy.
“Freddy had spoken to me about going somewhere, not because he wants to leave Wolves but because he wants to be playing. And I was sympathetic to that.
“I was prepared to let him go but he’s come on and made a difference in the last two games and I changed my mind which is my perogative.
“We’re in good shape but if I get two injured in one game suddenly it’s me who will be searching around for a striker.
“In the end, it’s about what’s good for our club. I can’t play everyone and they are not all going to be happy.
“But a contribution from any of the players could make a significant difference and that includes Freddy.”
The events do offer the clearest evidence so far, however, that Eastwood’s Wolves career will come to a close in the summer.
Coventry are furious over the about-turn but appeared to point the finger of blame beyond the manager’s office.
“The player has been fantastic and I have to say the manager was very good but the club itself has been appalling,” said Coleman.
The row erupted as Eastwood prepares to take his now customary place on the bench for tomorrow’s clash at Charlton.
McCarthy will be strengthened by the return of fit-again defenders Gary Breen and Darren Ward.
But the Edwards boys, both David and Rob, are absent injured.

Overruling the manager in this way must mean that McCarthys position is looking very shaky. The big clean-out that so many have been asking for looks like it will happen.

Colemans comments seem a bit harsh to me. After all, he’s our player and frankly it’s up to us wether we let him go or not. If Coleman didn’t have a back up plan, then thats his fault. Would be interesting to know why he deems the behaviour so appaling. I think he feels a little hard done by, bless him.

The fact of the matter is after a sensational start to his Wolves career, Freddy came back from international dity with Wales. Mick decided to rest him for i think the Sheffield United game due to tiredness, ie travelling to and from his destination.
He brought him back for the next 3 or 4 games and he didn’t do it. He was dropped as he was not performing.
He had his chances from the subs bench but game after game when he came on he was poor and didn’t look bothered. Apart from the two last subs appearance his last decent game was in August.
He may not have played much since the New Year but before that he had more total appearances than any of our Strikers bar Keogh and even Stephen Elliot had a better srtike rate.

With Bothroyd gone to Stoke and Ward&Elliott injured, I struggle to understand why MM contemplated allowing Eastwood to go to Coventry at all. If MM is quoted correctly, MM appears to have changed his mind on the basis of Eastwood´s contribution in the last two matches. So if Eastwood had not played more than his customary 5 mins in either of the past two matches, and Wolves were to “get two injured in one game”, then “suddenly it’s me who will be searching around for a striker” because Eastwood would have gone on loan. Where is the logic? Well, enough on this, I agree with Filtonwolf (Bristol) - post 7. Let´s calm dowm, Eastwood is still here, and we MAY reach the play offs…
I wish this would stop as enough has been said! I don’t think Freddy has had a fair crack but lets concentrate on supporting the team on the pitch for the last 7 games whatever the personnel!!!! Someone mentioned about SEB not being as good as Eastwood. They are both strikers, both bought here to be goalscorers, only one has lived up to that expectation, SEB. So Eastwood missed a gameme, so? Are you saying because he got rested for a game, that is the reason why he hasnt scored since August or whenever?
If so, SEB missed our cup game, came back, and has been scoring.

24 I agree that the “Freddy” chant was harsh when directed at Keogh, who doesn’t deserve it on a personal level, and I think even the people who chanted it realised this as from where I was sitting pretty much the same people started chanting “Keogh” when they realised what they were doing. However, the “Freddy” chant really arose out of the frustration of seeing a striker being put clear through by an excellent pass and not even forcing the goalkeeper to make a save. Keogh did foul up for QPR’s third goal as well, so his two goals redressed the balance (and it was Freddy who laid on the pass for the second). But it’s still a difficult question about who should be dropped to play Freddy.

The biggest question is if Coventry need a striker so desperately then why don’t they have Kyle back?! If he’s good enough for Wolves? who are considerable better off than Coventry (table wise at least) why is he not recalled? Chris Coleman was not the manager when Kyle left so why doesn’t he have him back. I fear the answer is because he’s not good enough for either club and Mick’s only got him to do him a favour.

The Eastwood /McCarthy situation is similar to Bull/Taylor of years ago. On that occasion Bull was able to engineer Taylors dismissal, but that won’t happen this time.

I’m heartily sick of those on this site who think there’s something inconsistent with slagging off Mick and supporting the team with equal passion!
I have nothing against Mick as a person. He seems, dedicated, sincere, passionate and witty - all good character traits. At the same time, his management this year in every single respect when taken in the context of the situation at the start of the season and the wealth of this club has been shambolic!
The point that has been made here - and its a valid one in my view - is that Eastwood has not been treated fairly when compared with SEB. They’re both talented finishers and they’re both lazy and selfish but one has been praised whilst the other has been cold-shouldered.
For me, it is further evidence that whether we scrape into the Premiership or not, MM has demonstrated that he is not a top class manager and I won’t change my tune or join the blind faith brigade just to avoid being labelled disloyal!

Freddy Eastwood is, in my mind, not deserving of the frenzy surrounding him on performances thus far. There is a lot of fiction around him not getting chances, but there has been a marked improvement over the last couple of weeks. Scunthorpe at home showed the Freddy that could be if he raised his tempo and work-rate. He could be a great for Wolves if he added that consistently.
Several in the last day or so have complained that Freddy is being played too deep when he comes on. That is not Mick’s instruction, but the way that Freddy Eastwood likes to play. That is the way he generally plays. he likes to come from deep, and hit shots from distance. watch him for Wales, and he plays the same way, as he also did with Southend. There may be a place for that, but the work-rate has to be there as well. he looked a different player when he came on against Scuny at home, and changed the course of the game, along with Jarvis. I am hoping that can be the real Freddy. (Whether from the bench or from the start.) You cannot, in todays game, do it one week, but not the next. Squads are too big for that.

saw an interview earlier with mad mick on skysports news. i would like to know where he gets his stuff because i want some! he says how wolves could have been top albion could have charlton etc, the only problem is that he is the manager, tactically naive, plays the wrong players, but what would i know i’m albion

It really is beyond me how anyone who has the remotest grasp of the glorious game can classify McCarthy as a good manager. He has spent his whole career playing favourites and trying to split the dressing room and the fans. He has an ego the size of a planet and a brain the size of a pea. I agree that changing manages for the sake of it is pointless but not as pointless as continuing with a proven failure who gets more bizarre week by week.
Heaven help us if he isn’t gone by the summer but this saga is hopefully the first sign that Morgan is taking an interest and is getting ready to wield the axe.

Good. Mick does a U turn after FINALLY realising he is wrong! Pulling out of a bad deal at the last minute….even better. Maybe if we’d had a manager man enough to pull Robbie Keane out of an obviously disasterous deal we’d be in the Premiership now.
I’m guessing Mick decided to loan out Bothroyd & Freddy at a similar time as neither were featuing much in his plans & both were getting out of shape. Since setting up the deal Freddy has hit form & is now an important part of Mick’s masterplan. So understandably he wants to keep him.
Or does he? We’ll see in the next few games. If he plays it’ll be clear that it was Mick’s decision. If he doesn’t it’ll be clear it was Morgan’s intervention, and Mick will cold shoulder Freddy out of spite. If thats the case Mick’s days would be numbered. I doubt he would take to kindly to being over ruled, and also if Morgan is siding with the fans on the Freddy issue…how could Mick possibly carry on, with him being so full of pride & principals?

The SEB / Keogh partnership is working and I’m sure that having FE on the bench is a bonus. Football now is a squad game and there is every indication that the player and the manager have no problem.

He works alot harder for starters, Fact is had he been given the same amount of time on the field as S Ward, S Elliot, Keogh and SEB then i believe he couuld well be the championships top scorer. 1) I know a lot of Plymouth fans who’s comment was that they were sad to see SEB go because he’s a good player but he’s lazy and selfish. We’ll see how selfless he is when we fail to make promotion and Prem clubs come sniffing in the summer.
2) I don’t believe that we have a divine right to be in the Premiership. If we do make it, however, I don’t believe Mick is good enough to manage in the top division.
Alan Irvine, Owen Coyne and even Tony Mowbray might not be managing in the Prem next year but they are all much better prospects as managers and I’d be happy to still be in the Championship next season with any of them….or Paul Ince or Roberto Martinez or….etc
3) There are 101 reasons why Newcastle aren’t a Premiership force and it has nothing to do with fan pressure to change the manager. All fans are fickle and have limited knowledge - including me - but judged on this season, if Mick went into Alan Sugar’s boardroom to have the season reviewed, even if he took Ian Holloway and Geraint Williams with him, he’d still be the one to be fired!!

Freddy shows some potential, but is not the real deal we wanted. IMO, I would like to see how he develops next season, then make a decision. If however someone came in with some real money then I would let him go.
SEB is a goalscorer, who his partner should be is still to be answered. Freddy is still a maybe.

I think Chris Coleman is generaly rated a decent manager having managed in the premiership.Why would he want Eastwood and be prepared to pay 1.5 million which is a lot of money for Coventry in their current financial situation he obviously sees what many Wolves Fans see a young international striker with tremendous potential.Good young international strikers are like gold dust.This is what baffles me and many other Wolves Fans.

I have been going to molineux since 1987, and this season has got to be the worst in those 21 years, any wolves supporter who can back mad mick is beyond me. Last week, i got fed up with the flack andy keogh and wayne hennesey was getting around me, because i believe that they have talent and potential, and that they are only 19 and 21. But the likes of Neil collins,Karl Henry,george at left back,Kevin kyle and all the other of mick the muppetts favorites are simply not good enough.And now steven gleeson has once again been dismissed by the ex international supermick.It has shown me once again that i can never have any faith or belief in the joke! But i,ll put a shift in though!
Now hear me out lads, why don’t we start a break off team, we’ll club together to buy Freddy and we’ll play him every week! He’ll score more goals than that Bull fella and we’ll stroll to the championship with attractive, attacking total football! We can even wear gold and black as a reminder of the team we used to support. What do you say?
As I have previously posted, we will be loosing several of the fans favourites this summer if the team does not get promotion. Eastwood is just one of the players who will want to better himself, and with his International experience he could well find a Premiership buyer.
The Coventry publicity was a good move by Mr Moxey to get Premiership clubs interested and get a bidding battle started.
Freddy — bought by Mad Mick as his main centre forward — for 1.5 million last season — now can hardly even polish the bench - or get more than 5 minutes to show his undoubted skills on the field. Scoring brilliantly on his debut, and laying on a second, MM stated “that Freddy showed his quality, and is a natural goal scorer, and it’s goals that win games”.
Then, for no understandable reason, MM’s used known goal shy forwards ahead of Freddy in the pecking order (Keogh, Bothroyd, Kyle).
So Freddy played the other night for Wales (he’s an Essex lad, but his maternal grandfather was from Llanelli) and played a full 90 minutes (for the first time since November) and scored two cracking goals.
Whenever he’s appeared on the field at Molineux — Freddy has charmed and thrilled the crowd with his ease and grace on the ball, and his Beckham-like powerful long balls, and distance shots on goal. He’s no box to box toiler — or goal mouth poacher. He can be anonymous for periods. But he’s the ideal player to feed the brickhouse like, in-the-box stalwart, assured goal-scorer, Ebanks Blake.
Freddy is an enigma to us Wolves fans as we’ve not seen him play a full match this season. But we’ve taken to calling “Fredeee; Fredeee; Fredeeee, after a half hour of tedious first half miss-hitting by our under-performing try-hards (most of what’s happened this season).
We’re (most of us) hoping upon hope that Freddy gets a full run-out on Saturday after his international heroics.

Yet our inspired management almost loaned him out to Coventry before the loan deadline ’till the (this time) not-so-Mad Mick pulled the plug on that one. Good for him for seeing his folly before it was too late — and avoiding the wrath of the Wolves fans with a crucial run in when we will most likely need the Freddy inspiration on the field.

Like every one else, I’d like to see Freddy play more often. But in order to do that, Freddy has to stop sulking in the training ground and prove MM that he’s good enough to play 90 minutes every week. A player as talented as him is definately capable of doing it easily!
Instead of moaning about Freddy not playing, lets encourage him to show more ambition on the training ground!
Let’s also give our support to SEB and Keogh who have been working really hard and been scoring and assisting alot of goals!
Im happy with MM overall, lately. But wether or not we change manager in the summer, it doesn’t matter. We’ve still got this season to finish and everything to play for!
So the only thing we can do is TO GIVE MM ÅND THE LADS ÅLL OUR SUPPORT!
We’ve had hard times this season and the only thing the lads could do about it was to leave it behind, correct their mistakes and to keep fighting even harder! And thats what they’ve been doing lately, we’ve been going the right direction.
