D-day set for post office closures

Post officeCampaigners fighting to stop the closure of post offices across Wolverhampton will find out in August which branches are doomed, Royal Mail said today.

One in five branches across the city are facing being shut down by the Government – sparking uproar among customers.

The closures are part of a nationwide programme to shut branches which the Government says are no longer viable.

Tettenhall Wightwick councillor Wendy Thompson today expressed concern for the future of branches in Tettenhall village, School Road, Tettenhall Wood, and Bridgnorth Road, Compton.

“Post offices are a lifeline, particularly for the elderly, and we have already seen the difficulties post office closures can cause after the branch at Castlecroft was shut,” she said.

“The main problem was the fact the nearest branch was at Merry Hill but there is no direct bus service.”

MPs failed to stop the closure programme earlier this month when a motion was proposed in the House of Commons demanding the Government halt plans to make 2,500 branches nationwide shut up shop.

Colin Ross, chairman of Wolverhampton South West Liberal Democrats, added: “The loss of post offices will hit communities hard.”
