£6.5m refit for hospital

An ambitious £6.5 million revamp of Wolverhampton’s Penn Hospital was today unveiled by city health chiefs. The Penn Road hospital will enjoy a major refurbishment to improve facilities and help boost services for patients.

It is also hoped the revamp will allow more therapeutic services to be offered along with leisure activities and more single-sex accommodation. Maxine Espley, Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust chief said accommodation was in need of updating.

The managing director for provider services, said today: “Inpatient accommodation for adults at Penn Hospital is now 10 years old and in need of refurbishing.

“Accommodation for the over-65s was upgraded last year and the new scheme will complete our improvement work at the hospital.

“One of the most exciting developments will be the creation of space to enable staff to provide many more therapeutic activities aimed at improving patients’ physical health and well-being.

“There will be a kitchen area for patients to learn new skills, as well as space for leisure activities.

“Work will also include providing more single-sex accommodation for male and female patients and upgrading the intensive care unit.”

Department of Health funding will be used to pay for £4.5 million of the work, with the trust topping up the remainder of the £6.5 million bill.

Patient representatives, hospital staff including clinicians and staff from the PCT’s estates and facilities directorate, have been involved in helping to plan the developments.

The PCT is now working with architects on the design and planning of the work, which is expected to get under way early in 2009 and take around six months to complete.

The hospital will remain open throughout the redevelopment.

Penn Hospital provides in-patient and outpatient mental health services for adults and the over-65s in Wolverhampton.
