Mick McCarthy today saluted the emergence of striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake as a key figure in Wolves reviving promotion challenge.
The £1.5m January recruit has been the most successful of McCarthy’s big money signings this season having scored seven in 13 games for his new club.
It has given the former Manchester United striker 20 Championship goals for the season following on from his scoring exploits with Plymouth and Wolves fans are looking to him with increasing confidence as the play off battle reaches crunch time.
McCarthy admits: “I’m delighted with him – he’s done everything that could have been asked of him.
“His all round play has been very, very good, he holds the ball up well and is a good target for us.
“He’s a goalscorer. He gets himself into those areas and as soon as he is in the 18-yard box he is looking to score.
“He’s very good at what he does and not many defenders will like playing against him.
“If he doesn’t score he is in a sulk, not in a bad way, but with himself.
“When we scored twice to win the game against Scunthorpe and he didn’t score it was as if he felt he had not done his job.
“He gets upset with himself. He wants to score goals and he is hungry to score more.”
And McCarthy believes Ebanks-Blake’s burly frame, which led to criticism earlier on in his Wolves spell that he was overweight, is a key part of the striker’s weaponry.
He added: “We’re all made differently and thank goodness we are. He utilises his strength and he’s incredibly difficult to knock off the ball.
“When he gets into that straight race for goal he takes some stopping.”

On another note, if we are looking for a promising young centre-half with pace this summer, we could do a lot worse than Ashley Williams at Stockport. He is already captain at his club, and is set to start for Wales tonight as well - despite only being 23. He is also Wolverhampton-born and was released by the scum when he was a youngster, so will no doubt have an affinity with the Wolves. Hopefully MM will be watching the Wales match (and Freddy!) tonight, so a good performance by Williams could put him on our radar (if he isn’t already)…

A quality signing.There is not much tinkering to be done at present. We are scoring regularly at the moment but are conceding.
The weak links are Collins and Henry. We have centre halves but MM won’t drop him. The holding midfielder role is more of a concern. Gibson has not done enough and could we play George and Edwards together as they are both attack minded.

Shatpankwolves 29 - I think Keogh should play on the right as he is our best player in that position, ithink the amount of chances he would create would be a real asset and he scored on Saturday from that position so can still get forward etc.
I agree with you about Eastwood, I really don’t know how he has this god like status. He is no Steve Bull and yet some people seem to think he is. Eastwood is no SEB, we should give SEB the plaudits and not Eastwood.

Not one to say I told you so but I commented how good S.E.B. was after watching him quite a bit at Plymouth. Sorry to say but he is far better than anyone we currently have in midfield. Would cost mind!

The Eastwood episode has been the cause of the disjoin between McCarthy, many players and a large number of Wolves fans. Eastwood has publicly groveled for a decent run in the team, what more can he do?
After last night, I believe that we have arrived at a point where an official explanation is required to stop the anger and confusion caused to the paying fans.
WHY WON’T MCCARTHY PLAY EASTWOOD?
After seven months of playing without scoring Eastwood finally found the net again. After seven months of constantly denying the truth the Eastwood supporters finally got the last word.
Eastwood has scored again and more will come - no doubt about that. The history and the facts are still there and cant be denied, but does not matter that much anymore. We now have three good strikers who can score goals. SEB, Keogh and Eastwood.
Look, I am not anti-Freddy. (I think Big Wolf IS Freddy, by the way.) If he came on and scored hat-trick after hat-trick I would be delighted. When we bought him I was excited. For me though, even though he has obvious talent (and scored two goals against that behemoth of International Football, Luxemburg)he has started ten games, played in at least 12 for 30 minutes or more.and has scored three league goals. If that was Elliott or Kyle, they, and Mick,would be pilloried. Eastwood can be a good player, but has not shown it yet for Wolves, apart from against Scunny last Tuesday. For the first time he put himself about, chased and harried. If he did that week in and week out he would play regularly. I seriously would love to see him do it, as we will need it if we are to have any chance of going up. A football manager cannot select players on what they may be though. He has to pick them on what they are doing now. That has been the trouble with England in my opinion. Too many players are played when they are not currently performing at their best whilst others are playing better and not getting a game. (Please don’t tell me that Freddy is playing better than either Keogh or SEB.) We know it is in there, but when they are not playing to their potential they should not play. That is in my opinion, and I know I could be wrong, why Mick McCarthy is not currently starting Freddy Eastwood.
My pet peeve is the people who hero-worship one player who is not performing, and make outrageous claims that he hasn’t played. The same people pillory Elliott and Kyle, one of whom has played less and scored as many goals. Where are the cheers for SEB on here? He is by far and away our best striker. He gets in the box, puts himself about, and runs off the ball to get into scoring positions. Hero worship for him I could understand.

Pedro, Where do you get 5 full games from? As I said previously, I am not anti-Freddy, but anti-Freddy Huggers. I read somewhere that Coventry expect Freddy Eastwood to sign for them today on loan. As I said yesterday, I am aware that Mick McCarthy has made mistakes. That would be more than a mistake. That would be lunacy. I still believe that Freddy Eastwood can possibly become a twenty goal a season man, but needs just the extra effort to become such. The talent is there, but the extra effort is what will set him apart from other promising strikers. (Bothroyd for example) who had the potential but never fulfilled it.
My first loyalty as a fan is to Wolves. Anyone with a Wolves shirt on his back on the field of play will also have my support. If Eastwood plays I am an Eastwood fan as well. SEB and AK are getting that right now, as they are the present incumbents.
I’d love to see Freddy alongside SEB this weekend at Charlton,but we know MM will probably opt for a 4-5-1 formation again.

I see Brereton Wolf is at it again with his meaningless statistics, when is he going to learn that if you are really and truly boring enough you can twist statistics to prove anything - Look at what the politicians do day in day out. Mind you it would be very hard work to prove that Mad Mick is anything but a very poor manager!
You can only score against the team you are playing. Luxembourg have had some decent results recently and so a 2-0 away win is okay. Freddie , as we know, got both the goals and they were good ones too. MM needs to remember that it was his poor decision making that sent Freddy on a downward turn. Maybe he can redress the balance now and start playing him regularly - to score goals not run round like a headless chicken !! I would love a format that could accommodate SEB Keogh and Freddy - maybe Keogh could play just behind them in a 4-3-1-2 formation. Keogh has the legs to shore up midfield when necessary and help in attack when we are going forward.

Dont agree with MM about the quality of his hold up play and as a target man. From what I’ve seen he really needs to work on his technique and first touch.This would be exposed if he gets to play in the prem. He often loses possession too easily but is hard to knock off the ball
89, Old Timer Wolf, I work as an accountant, and therefore know that facts are usually facts. If it has a bill, and quacks, it’s usually a duck. I have nothing against Freddy Eastwood as a player. I believe all of the ammunition is there for him to become a Wolves Legend. To date though, apart from brief flashes, he hasn’t really done it. What I have a problem with, and you are typical of it, is that there is a certain section of our fans that see nothing beyond Freddy. We have the best striker since Steve Bull in our squad currently in SEB, but all you go on about is Freddy this, and Freddy that. As I say, he has the makings of a very good player. There are others out there that also wear the Gold and Black that you Freddy Huggers not only overlook, but actually boo. How can that be right?
At the moment we have two strikers that are scoring on a regular basis. You Freddy Huggers complain that “Freddy was dropped whilst he was scoring.” Now you have been calling for MM to do the same to Andy Keogh. Why is it bad for Eastwood and good for Keogh? You might say that you want both in the team, but that is just an excuse to include your beloved Freddy at any cost. Who would be the holding midfield player? You can’t say Seyi Olofinjana, as his natural game is to get forward. (Supposing you want to drop Henry.) What about when Kights is fit again? Who gets dropped in your scenario then? Keogh or Freddy? Let me try and guess….?
Eastwood is going to be a good player for us, but needs to add more work-rate to his game. People say that isn’t his natural game. If it isn’t, why was his best game for quite a while the one against Scunthorpe at home, where he did up his work-rate? He came on, and changed the game. He looked really good that night. You will no doubt argue that he needs more games, and that Mick is wrong not to play him, and that he would be a lot better for a run of games. MM said that, against Scunny, Freddy finally did what he has been asking him to do all season. You lot slated MM for that, and made it look as though he was claiming the credit for making Freddy better that night. What he was really saying was, that if FE had worked like that all season, he would have played regularly. (My boss wants me to work in certain ways. I don’t always agree with that way, but I do it, and I keep my job. Why should FE be different?)
As stated several times, I am not anti-Freddy. I’m anti- Freddy Huggers. You insult all of our other players by totally focusing everything on one player that you hero-worship. (Not you individually, but the Freddy Brigade.) Who would you rather keep if it was either Freddy or SEB? I would choose the latter, as he has done it for us already. Freddy has it all there, but needs to give 100% whether he starts or comes on for only a while. You and I don’t disagree about FE’s potential. We disagree about his production.

Mr Mant (88) I think Micks toyed with “4 5 1″ because for big chunks of the season he couldn’t find a “2″ that were up to it. And to compound the problem, when we did, the “5″ were not that great either. Now we’ve got a “2″ that are looking good and a “4″ that are hitting a resonable bit of form too.
Think that adds up to 111 (if you don’t count the too at the end!)

Yet another thread boils down to the Eastwood fan club pining for Freddy to play.Ebanks Blake is twice the player Eastwood is,and Keogh brings more to the team also.If Eastwood has such a large ego he cant play his way into the side then get rid to Cov and get our money back.Eastwood has obvious goalscoring ability but it’s also obvious he has too much ‘atitude’ for Mcarthy’s liking.SEB is different class and if he is still at Wolves in three years time it will mean we are in the prem.
