Walsall manager Richard Money has backed Tommy Mooney to fire the goals that will reignite their play-off bid.
The skipper is Saddlers’ top scorer with 10 so far this season, but only one of those has come in 2008.
He has now gone 10 games without a goal, but was desperately unlucky against Crewe.
“For a guy who’s 36 to go out and play like he did against Crewe, having played at 5.20pm on Saturday, was a tremendous effort,” Money said.
“And I don’t think you can do too much more to score a goal. I don’t know how many efforts he had, maybe six or seven, but that is the way of goalscorers.
“Sometimes they have spells where whatever they do they can’t seem to hit the back of the net.
“Hopefully in the last six or seven games there’s a bundle of goals waiting for him. He knows he has to keep going.”
Walsall have scored fewer goals at home than any other club in League One other than Yeovil and Cheltenham, and although they have taken only two points from 15, Money is still bullish about their play-off prospects.
“Here we are with seven games to go and we’re still in the hunt,” Money said.
“It would be nice to still have a chance on the last day of the season and that’s what we’ve got to aim to do.”

“Walsall have scored fewer goals at home than any other club in League One other than Yeovil
and Cheltenham” - just about sums it up. Walsall haven’t got the guile to break teams down that’s why
we have got such a poor home record. We are (or were when we had Fox and Dann) good at soaking up
pressure and then hitting teams on the break. We have needed a quality striker all season to partner
Mooney - he has done well but he is 36!. We had one for a while with Ricketts but presumably we wouldn’t
pay him the money to sign permanently. If, as looks likely, we miss out on the play-offs then it will
be another missed opportunity - we are used to those at Walsall. P.S. I hope Bonser and his pension fund
will be very happy!
