Martin O’Neill has hinted that Craig Gardner’s future will not be at right-back after claiming he “doesn’t want to abuse his versatility”.
Midfielder Gardner has filled in the problem position for Villa in four of the last five games with Olof Mellberg injured and suspended.
Villa have won one, drawn two and lost one of those four matches.
Gardner has proved his versatility by playing in three different positions this season – right-back and right midfield as well as his preferred role in central midfield.
He played wide right for England under-21s in their goalless draw against Poland at Molineux last night – where he could feature this Saturday at Manchester United with Mellberg available again.
Gardner is favourite for a switch of roles
Certainly, boss O’Neill says he isn’t keen for Gardner to become a jack of all trades.
“I don’t want to abuse his versatility,” said O’Neill.
“I remember Ian Bowyer was a great player at Nottingham Forest and he could play in any position on the field.
“He was our most trusted and worthwhile utility player. But he always had the belief that when everybody was fit, the utility man didn’t go into the side.”
Yet O’Neill says the variation will improve Gardner’s awareness and all-round game.
“I think in any era of football the utility man will get loads of games,” said the boss.
“Craig has shown he’ll play anywhere for us. He’s playing at right-back and, going forward, he can use his natural talents.
“Defensively he’ll need to improve. He’ll need to look at Mellberg, Martin Laursen…
“But I’ve got the utmost regard for Craig Gardner.
“He’s got a great drive, and when you consider he’s been playing at the back, he has still scored three majestic goals for us this season.”
