New plan for historic factory site

wd2699663lloyds-2-ae-26.jpgMore than 150 homes could be built on the site of an historic Black Country chain-making firm.

Developers hope to demolish the former Lloyds of Brierley Hill and replace with it with the large canalside housing scheme. The 130-year-old chainmakers in Brettell Lane closed in 2005 and 170 jobs were lost.

But now the derelict site could rise from the ashes with the multi-million pound plan for 157 homes, which will be geared towards families and first-time buyers.

Property investors Scottish Capital Group (SCG), are behind the plan. They have spent a year in consultation with Dudley Council about how best to develop the area by the Dudley Canal.

The closure of the foundry sparked anger when work was transferred to India.

It was once part of the Samuel Taylor business which made chains and machinery for ships such as the former Royal Yacht Britannia and the QEII.

Brierley Hill councillor Zafar Islam said the regeneration of the site was desperately needed.
