Wayne Hennessey admits his outstanding debut season in English football will count for little without Wolves making the Championship promotion play-offs.
The 21-year-old keeper will collect the first of what many expect to be a raft of Player of the Year awards from supporters groups when the London branch present him with his award on the eve of Saturday’s Charlton clash.
He expects to be fit for the next challenge in Wolves’ bid for a second successive play-offs appearance, despite pulling out of the Welsh squad yesterday with a hamstring strain.
It has left him free to focus on the crunch phase of the team’s challenge with back-to-back away games against contenders Charlton and Bristol City before a re-arranged Black Country derby which could have a massive bearing on Wolves’ promotion prospects.
It was against Albion in last season’s semi-finals when Hennessey made his dramatic entrance on to the big stage after injury to Matt Murray.
Since then he has grabbed his country’s No1 spot and attracted strong interest from Premiership pair Everton and Villa.
“It’s been a great year for me, but it won’t count for much if we don’t finish it by making the play-offs again,” admits Hennessey.
“I felt the injury in the final stages of Saturday’s game, but we had used all our subs so I had to stay on. It’s not a big problem, though, and I expect to be fit for Saturday.
“But it’s there for us now – we’ve just got to get into that top six. I thought we played really well on Saturday, although we’ve got to do better in defence.
“I should have stopped their first goal – it took me by surprise.
“I’ve a let a couple of bad goals in but I feel quite fresh. Mentally it can be harder than it is physically, but my aim is to hopefully keep improving.
“These are massive games for us now – Charlton and Bristol City are chasing the same prize but we’ve got good away form. We’ve got to believe in ourselves now.
“But I think all of us will feel a sense of failure if we don’t make it into the play- offs now.”

Wayne Hennessey WILL walk out on you when you miss the playoffs. Like all Wolves players, he hates the place!
Wayne You need to come off your line and for me you need to take a rest you are very young and time is on your side but dont end up like Oakes he had the same problem
Re 1 - and Gera / Phillips love the Albion so much that neither have signed contract extensions? Unlike Wayne, who signed an extension a couple of months ago. Your comments, like your automatic promotion chances, are redundant…
WE AINT GOOD ENOUGH TO GO UP THIS YEAR, I LOVE MY TEAM AND SUPPORT THEM NOT BOO THEM, BUT IF WE GO UP WE WILL GET KILLED IN THE PREM! ONE MORE YEAR IN THIS LEAGUE WILL HELP THE TEAM TO GEL!
I disagree with Brian about coming off your line - I think you’re doing fine. Being a goalie myself I know that you only have a split second to make that decision on whether to come for the cross etc. and you’ll end up letting more goals in if you start committing to going for balls you’re not 100% sure you’ll get. Typical example is Reina at the weekend.
We need to lose the play off final to Hull.
HENNESSEY .. HENNESSEY !! Wayne If You Could Control More Of Your Box More Like Of Corners .. Coming Out To Get The Ball And Then Getting At Teams On The Break .. I Think You Would Be In The Region Of The Buffons And Kahns !! Another Great Keeper He Will Be Gone For £5Million And Up To Everton!! Like Lescott Did !!
1, Another senseless wise comment from the village idiot, wolves will make the play offs. 4, your right but is anyone else good enough to go up out of the championship! if wolves go up they need to invest at least 20,million like anyone else who gets promoted.
7, AND MAKE THE ODD SAVE,BOING BOING
Wolves have an amazing eye for goalkeepers. Look at how successful Carlos Kemeni has become. He would
have been at the Molineux had it not been for those pesky work permit people.
Boing boing, bouncing down off the automatic promotion line…..
WE WILL FINISH 10TH …………….SO STOP DREAMING YOUR BLITHERING IDIOTS.
4. If we do go up we have been promised very heavy investment from Morgan follwong the statement of account with big Jez.. So how can going up end in failure. If we go up we are able to attract bigger and better players. If we stay down we might lose McCarthy and that will lead to the team being ripped apart again. How can that help the team?
If theres any team in the division that can make in in the premiership it has to be wolves ? By far the biggest fan base, a new owener still with money to invest. A young a very talented team tht to be honest just need better direction than what there gettin from Mad Mick.
Plus if were going up its obviously thru the play offs which is the biggest cash prize in football today. Especially if its a wolves albion playoff final.
4 points from the next to games and were going up.
What he’s trying to say is that if we don’t make the playoff’s this season, i’m off.
9.
our third choice keeper Ikeme is ten times better than your first choice keeper so you need to do your homework before you open your stupid mouth.
Up the Wolves.
SEB and Keogh are gonna get ya.
EVEN IF WE WERE TO GET IN THE PLAY-OFFS AND GET PROMOTED .. WE WOULD DO WORSE THAN DERBY !!
he said you need playoffs because without them he is off to the premiership which means your stuck with the injury prone matt murray. Saying that though he is still better than dean kiely (not hard) we am playing him when we have the second best keeper in czech republic on our bench. Anyway i hope you get in the play offs and get to play us we could do with a bye to the final.
You faggies are soo jealous it seems, just cos Wolves always have class GKs you lot say he’s off to prem.
Well there’s no doubt he will have clubs sniffing after him, I can only hope we have enough sense not to let this kid go.
He has a great future ahead of him, But If we did have to let him go, he’s worth 5m plus IMO.
7. Is that why hennessey saved a penalty this season at the hawthorns .. againest apparantly west broms best player zoltan gera (dont make me cry) and even he wants to go beacuse he knows youre that rubbish !! cant wait till we play you .. we are going to make you look like a pub team !! HAHA
Albion have to get some random GK Danek to try and solve their problems in that department, And all that cos Kiely just will NOT leave.
Oh and theres always Ikeme to fall back on, no doubt with Bobby Mimms as trainer he’ll turn out to be great aswell.
Why do Baggie fans always post on our messages? Is it because they like insulting us more than they do supporting there team? Or is it that nothing ever excicting happens at Albion so there are no stories for E&S to tell? I think it’s because when we talk about players such as Hennesey, Murray and Lescott ‘them lot down the road’ are jealous that they never have a homegrown player to support. So instead of bad-mouthing or team which trys to use our academy, Try asking why the Albion can’t create anyone. Instead of playing Hennesey, we should have got what Albion have got, a fat 37 year old who makes more mistakes than a 3 year old doing Algebra!
As for Wolves being a Play-off push over for the Albion, DID ANY OF YOU THINK DERBY WOULD BEAT YOU!!! That was the cherry on top of a fantastic season.
WANDERERS TILL I DIE!
22) nothing exciting happens at albion, not sure about that. Fa cup semi is pretty excititng. Anyway not on here to tit for tat. We comment on your boards you comment on ours, its the way it is.
20) ” we will make you look like a pub side” there is nothing like blind ignorance, on what basis are you going to make us like a pub team. you are harldy setting the division on fire are you.
but anyway good luck for tyhe rest of the season i think ther play offs may be a step top far this year but good luck anyway see you down the moll for your usual pasting and our usual chasing (all good fun)
comment 13- i agree with you but big players wouldnt come to us until the 2cnd season in the prem (u got to prove your worthy of the prem first) now can u honestly tell me that we have a good enough side to survive a season in the prem with what we have?? dont get me wrong i love my team but it would be just as bad if we went up! we would lose alot of games and MM would be out the door! i have a horrible premanision that Sammy Lee is closing in on us! bad times!
for the record i wanna keep MM!
Wolves make the playoffs?
I do believe in faires, I do, I do…
I think Wayne and Kites will both be on their way at the end of the season.
At least Mick can say he’s got to rebuild, should be an excuse for next year.
23) Keep talking big head
If Leicester can beat you I Doubt your gonna ‘paste us.’
28) not sure that logic works really. we beat barnsle - barnsley beat chelsea so we would beat chelsea
you see the flaws in your logic??
If and when we go up we would struggle with this team but we won’t have this team.Morgan is worth half a BIllION,much more than Sir Jack and more than most premiership chairman like Majeski etc.Give him a bit of time, support encouragement. He must be wondering what he’s come to at the moment. No wonder he prefers to watch the Champions League.
Please can someone tell me why fellow wolves fans love to slate the team off day in day out!!!
Go to the match and SUPPORT them people stop, whinging and whining your pathetic….. Come on the WOLVES
I HOPE WE DONT GET IN PLAY OFFS OR GO U BECAUSE THEN IT WILL BE ANOTHER WITH THAT IDIOT MICK McCarthy :@:@:(:(
thought the two goals scored past him (not pen) were soft and although got direction on shots hardly
bust the net, he is commanding enough
4-5m shake your hand off, im not saying he isnt good enough but he far from perfect keeper
8, I think you will find your seaon is over when Charlton beat you next game! You ain’t got a hope of making the playoffs with that performance against QPR. Charlton are your playoff rivals, lose to them and you are history, like your mnager and goalie, who by the way will go for about 1 Million not 5 Million get real.
Phillips loves the Albion so much his house is for sale
Big Wolf/scotty freddy fan/Frazzel Chops:
For so-called LOYAL SUPPORTERS,you certainly know how to show your true colours.
PLAY OFFS,hahahahahhahaahhahahahahahahahahaaahhahahaahhhahahahahahaah,is it april 1st. DOING THE DOUBLE THE MOWBRAY WAY,,,OH YES.GOING TO WEMBLEY WITH MOWBRAY NOW THATS A FACT…OH YES
33,
do you know anything about football, 1mil, more like 5 0r 6mil.
you give albion fans a bad name, lol
34 - I love the Albion and MY house is for sale…. what a fantastic point you make.
For £9,000,000 i’d sell Hennessey. It would buy 4 Quality additions. 2 centre halves obviously an A rated keeper and a midfield general.
It’ll only be goal difference between us and the sh@t at the death, just wait and see.
fiddle de de !!
Where you going to next Wayne? you are nearer to the pitch than I am, surely you can see the likelyhood of the playoffs?
27. wolveswolves
I agree totally, both Wayne and Kites will be sold in the close season, after Wolves fail to get promotion. The interesting question is for how much?
Both players want to play in the Premiership, who can blame them and when Wolves fail to get them there, they will want to leave for the sake of their careers.
Mr Morgan has bought WWFC to learn about how to chair a football club. It was a giveaway, literally, and while he can afford to loose a few millions that will not be necessary as the club is a well run Championship club where all costs are geared towards making profit. It’s a nice little earner!
That is where so many fans have a problem, because they want to see the team playing in the Premiership, but the club is geared for profitable trading at Championship level.
I hope these bloody boggie fans fall flat on their arrogant faces, anybody would think they are murdering the championship and are in the final of the FA cup.Fact is,they aren’t and they would do well to remember that,it could all go horribly wrong………..
terrywembley baggie 9.and make the odd save, bet you wish your old fogey of a poor excuse for a keeper could make the odd save (like in the last couple of matches).it took him half hour to get down for that tame headee at charlton last week.hope you’regonna change your name to tearfulwembleyboggy when you get whooped by pompey
#30, why not ask Morgan to “show us the money”. Reread his worth at (maybe 450M), of which 400M is on paper, value of things he either can’t sell (350M)or won’t sell. His liquid cash is about 25M. Can’t actually pull out 30M in one dump.. He is like us, lots of equity (he thinks) in things that cost 10 quid and worth 20 quid…
He offered 73M insertion into Liverpool, but David Moores spotted his game, the game of paper rather than brass. Flipped him out of the way for guys with real dough.
Sir Jack and Moxey were taken with the large numbers, the ones he wrote on the bathroom wall while having a pee! I think they pealed off the paint with the numbers, took them to the bank and the wall bounced…now we have a 10 quid investment, second calibre players, terrible manager but heck we are in the black! Bit like a coal mine you can’t get out of…
Post 39. When are you leaving the district then?
When you go take TerryWalsall or Wembley and Worcester Baggies with you they lower the standards round here.
