Walsall boss looking at defenders

Walsall manager Richard MoneyWalsall manager Richard Money may still boost his play-off chasing squad with the addition of a centre-back before the transfer deadline.

The emergency loan window closes at 5pm on Thursday. Money must conclude any deals by then if he wishes to add to his numbers for a final push for promotion.

In addition to first choice duo Anthony Gerrard and Ian Roper, Money has only one further recognised stopper at the club – 19-year-old reserves skipper Manny Smith, who hasn’t figured in a first-team game for nearly a year.

“If I could find a central defender between now and Thursday then I think we’d have to think about doing that,” Money said.

“And I’m not pointing the finger at anybody at all, but we only have very young cover there.”

Money hasn’t ruled out the possibility of adding to his squad in other positions before Thursday afternoon, but he would sooner give the young talent at the club a chance to shine if possible.

“If something else came up that we genuinely felt would help us then we’d look at that too,” Money said.

“But I really do think that we have a promising group of players here and I don’t want to stand in the way of their progress.

“I watched Alex Nicholls play and Troy Deeney play against Crewe and I know that we’ve also got Mark Bradley and Richard Taundry to come back, so do we need to bring anyone in?

“There aren’t many players out there that are going to come and help us at this moment and that’s the same for every club.

“When you bring people in sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t.”

This is absolute rubbish money, i suspect you were told that no funds were available after the sale of scott dann, you have waited to see if you can get away with ropes and have been found out.

Just admit that JB wont give you any cash and thats the reason you want to leave

“…so do we need to bring anyone in?” ????????????????

    We most certainly do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A striker is paramount. Either a top flight youngster or a championship old guard poacher. We need goals!!!!! Mooney has looked off for about the last 5 or 6 games!

We also need a centre-back that, unlike Ropes, is quicker at turning than the QE2!!!! It’s been his lack of mobility that has cost us points in recent weeks, his inability to keep up or turn with his marker has lead to at least 6 goals since he’s been back in the team. I’d rather play Mannie Smith if the opposition has a nibble centre forward.

I wish posters on here and elsewhere would stop questioning Richard Moneys integrity.
Things have not gone well, I was at Leeds and we were soundly beaten, if chances had been taken just before half time yeasterday we could and should have beaten Crewe who are scrapping for their lives.
Southend will prove whether we are serious challengers for a play off place, if we fail then we have made a great effort but champions last season and play off challengers this, its not been a bad season has it?
Get off his back and get behind the team until its impossible for us to challenge, how many left before the final whistle yesterday and missed us grabbing a valuable equaliser to add to our points total?

What a bunch of moaners we have supporting the club. We’ve had a great season and Money, and dare I say it - Bonser deserve credit.

I must be a moaner then because im gutted the way we have let a playoff place slip, selling best players not replacing them, Money constantly telling us we shudn’t be in the playoffs etc. After going home & away for 30 years decided to stop going to games after the Leeds game until Bonser has left the club.

Far from Jeff not giving Money any cash, Dicky Dosh hasn’t even spent all of his original playing budget. As for “letting a play off place slip”, how do you work that out, with that many games left? We haven’t let anything at all slip, yet, and may not at all. If you seriously believe that a club with our resources was going to go through the season without suffering a blip, then you are sadly deluded.

ok maybe slip was the wrong words ‘throw away’ would have been a better choice, and if its Moneys fault for not getting players in, or players better than Betsy than may be he isnt the great manager he claims to be.

You cant blame fans for giving up on this season. Persistent ‘we have no right to be at this level’ type comments eventually work their way through to the fans, not to mention the team.
