Defender Rio Ferdinand has been named England captain for tomorrow’s clash with France.
The Manchester United centre back has been handed the armband ahead of John Terry, who was skipper under Steve McClaren, and Steven Gerrard, who lead the team in Fabio Capello’s first game in charge against Switzerland last month.
Despite the decision, there is no certainty Capello will choose Ferdinand as permanent captain.
An FA statement said: “Fabio Capello has confirmed that Rio Ferdinand will captain England against France in Paris.
“Capello has confirmed this continues his policy of rotating the captaincy between players in the friendly matches before confirming a permanent captain for the World Cup qualifying games.”

Should have been Lescott :P
ferdinand what a joke!!
does that mean woodgate will play ahead of terry?
Brillant news!
This will obviously tell the likes of JT to show some respect to Ref’s rather than chasing after them. The Cashley Cole incident springs to mind!!!
How is this a joke?
Where was John Terry’s influence and leadership during our embaressing Euro 2008 campaign?
I’m so glad Capello has finally noticed how **** John Terry is.
He can’t run for starters!
At least it isn’t Gerrard. He showed his lack of leadership when Mascheranno was mouthing off at the ref on Sunday. Gerrard was nowhere to be seen.
Ferdinand is a comedian - should’ve been Gerard.
Terry is not an international standard captain.
