Gera future a win, win: Albion boss

gera22.jpgAlbion boss Tony Mowbray today claimed Zoltan Gera’s uncertain future at The Hawthorns could turn into a ‘win, win’ situation for the Baggies.

Mowbray reckons he’s guaranteed to get the best from the Hungarian captain for the rest of the season – partly due to the 28-year-old’s contract ending in the summer.

Gera’s English agent spoke for the first time yesterday on his client’s future and claimed Gera is keen to stay at Albion if they win promotion.

Mowbray said: “It can only be positive because he has to perform. If he performs to a very high standard, it’s positive for Zoltan and for us.

“If some huge club wants to come in and pay him huge money because he’s an excellent player, then good luck to Zoltan.

“The only way he’s going to get that move – if that’s what his heart desires – is by playing top quality football, which benefits us.

“If we get promoted, and he decides his best option is to stay here, then we’ll benefit from that as well.

“But at the moment, we’ll benefit from a player who is striving to be at his best every week, whether it’s to get us out of this league or whether it’s for his own future.”

Gera will become a free agent in June and he’s so far refused the offer of an extended contract at The Hawthorns, choosing to keep his options open.

At the weekend, Gera’s advisors admitted interest from rival clubs both in England and abroad.

But English agent Sam Stapleton said yesterday that the midfielder’s preferred option would be an extended stay with the Baggies, providing they can offer him top-flight football.

Mowbray today refused to be drawn into a debate.

The manager said: “I haven’t got into a conversation with his agents.

“The bottom line is that Zoltan is in the right frame of mind in training and he’s happy.

“His wife has just given birth to a baby daughter and he’s a contented footballer at the moment.

“Depending on what division we’re in, contract packages might change and Zoltan and his advisors are well aware of our situation.”

    Totally agree with TM.

Whatever happens now with Gera, i will not be the type of supporter that would boo if he returned against the Albion in the future, for me we did not get promotion last season but he has remained an Albion player this year, for whatever reason and given his all to try and get us back up to the Premiership.
It’s quite obvious to me he ain’t planning to leave for money reasons and that the only reason he would leave is to play on the games top stage, who can argue with that?
He has been a thoroughly good professional for us and for that i can only wish him the best if he does move.
Hopefully we do gain promotion and we see Zoltan donning the Blue & White in the Premiership next season, and you never know West Brom could also offer him a European stage to play on next season.

    Come on you baggies!!!!

if we were footballers,or played for the wolves,we would want the best deal ,you cant blame him if in modern football you sign a 5 year deal it is normally extended after 2/3 years due to the bosman ,therefore if he goes we say thanks if he styas the 3 million we would have to pay 4 him in a transfer is just added to his wages ,thats why ballack is chelseas highest earner!! shame but thats modern football!! oh and thats also why it will cost more to see them play!!

  6. lee craddock said:

haha, wembley baggie cant even spell his own managers surname? clever down sandwell town arnt you furthermore, gera will go. who wants to stay at a team not goin up cus their feelin the pressure

he should be playing his best anyway not just because he wants to leave.
by bigger club he probably means Reading, Birmingham, even Derby.
hell leave whether you go up or not.
hes been dying to leave for ages now.
    staying down the mowlbury way.

its all part of the negotiation process. He is a premiership quality player like many others in our squad. If we dont get promoted we may lose a few of them, but TM will just get more replacements like the latest batch.

    7. you haven’t got a clue. players want to leave sandwell because ,well because its sandwell who wants to go there all the time when you can go to somewhere more glamorous like an allotment, less fruit and veg on an allotment.

  14. Jonah said:

I don’t blame Gera for wanting a crack at the Premier League again if we do not go up. It’s not down to club size or loyalty, it’s down to ambition. At 28 years old he realises that he needs to be playing at a higher level than he is now.

  15. BigNeil1 said:

Why no speculation about top clubs wanting any of Wolves’players? Oh yeah, they’re not good enough!

Another one leaving the sinking ship, but he’s not good enough for the premier, maybe somewhere like Hull(who are taking your place)or Bristol City/Stoke.

Always raises a laugh - read any Albion story and you’ll see the usual sad Wolves fans making daft comments.
Sandwell Town this, Tesco carrier bag that. Real funny lads. Read your own stories, support your own team and focus on doing what you do best - getting on the backs of your players, managers and board. Real surprise that you’ve managed one year in the prem regardless of spending more than most prem clubs have in the last

Yeh 18. Just like the whole of your squad aint good enough for the Championship. I can understand your comments if you were in the Premiership, but teams like Hull are still above you lot anyway. JOKER !!!!!!!!!!

    9. Michael is obsessed with Albion?? Possibly. By the way, whats your nickname to do with?? Glass houses lads. The silly banter goes both ways. Just look at some of the Wolves stories and read some of the comments. By the way Big Neill, er Kightly/Hennessy maybe.

Gera is not the only good player in the team there are plenty of others. If he doesnt want to play for us let him go, one man doesnt make a team.If his heart is not in the baggies he should not be in the team it doesnt matter how good he his.As long as he plays his heart out for the baggies till the end of the season and we are promoted, he can please him self if he goes or stays

jwba- no wolves players want to leave thats the difference, kightlys come from non-league to england under21 in 12 months, signed a long term deal, hennessey signed 3 year deal a few months back, ebanks has just signed. PLAYERS WANT TO PLAY FOR WOLVES. Hoefkins slated the area and the club, fatboy robinson wanted out but couldnt pass a medical, gera clearly wants out but mentioning real madrid etc is awful hes hardly set the championship alight! phillips wont sign shows whos the club on the up and whos the club whos players all our looking for the exit door like last year!!!!!

  36. laughingwolf said:

wakeybaggie 26-i will crawl away if you win the double but what happnes if you dont and most likely win nothing, will crawl away from this site?

  37. Cyril Randle said:

No 34. ‘Tis better to have played and lost, than never to have played at all. We have a glamour date at Wembley, maybe she’ll turn us down, but we’re on a promise. Even Little Red Riding Hood was scared of the Big Bad Wulfy.

  39. Baggie Boy said:

34 … I dont think you understand how contracts work let me explain..

Goalkeeper signs 3 year deal… means club can ask more money for him due to the fact he is settled at club

kightly signs longer deal … Means cub can ask more money for him due to the fact he is settled.

contracts are there so the player gets paid and the club can demand a fee nothing mre nothing less.

Also, Terry wembley baggie, how on earth do you come to the conclusion you have reeled me in by spelling your managers name wrong? i acctually just think it was a mistake due to your low IQ, but if it was due to some inside joke, that i didnt get because im not on here all the time like you, thats because i have a life. also if it was some inside joke, yes, well funny isnt it that one. if i could add a electronic sarcastic tone, i would mate. up the wolves
