Albion defender faces cup race

leon.jpgDefender Leon Barnett is facing a race to be fit to play for Albion at Wembley – and Ishmael Miller has suffered another England injury blow.

Baggies boss Tony Mowbray today ruled Barnett out of Saturday’s home Championship clash with bottom club Colchester and admitted he’s still uncertain when the young defender will return to action after a hamstring injury.

The news cast doubt over Barnett’s chances of figuring in the FA Cup semi-final against Portsmouth on April 5 although so far Mowbray has refused even to rule him out of the trip to Cardiff four days earlier.

Meanwhile, Miller has been withdrawn from England’s under-21s squad to face Poland at Molineux tonight after missing training yesterday with a groin strain.

The news was another international blow to the young striker, who has received several under-21s call-ups but has yet to figure in a match.

However with Miller expected to face Colchester, Mowbray’s longer term concern will be Barnett, who hasn’t played since pulling his hamstring late in the 4-1 home defeat to Leicester.

Mowbray said today: “Leon won’t be ready for the weekend and it’s difficult to say when he’ll play because there are so many matches coming up.

“I don’t know when he’s going to be fit. It could be two weeks or it could be four although we’re hoping it will be closer to two.”

A two-week recovery would see Barnett back in training early next week, giving him a chance of figuring at Cardiff and especially at Wembley.

But a rehabilitation period lasting much longer would cast doubt on his chances of facing Pompey.

Mowbray confirmed that stricken midfielder Filipe Teixeira underwent successful surgery last week to repair the cruciate ligament in his left knee.

2, You sum up a typical dingle. It really makes me laugh when you lot come on our boards and slate us about our bubble bursting and that players will be leaving etc. 1st of all you have to make a bubble for it to have a chance of bursting…… your bubble was popped and vanished into thin air before Christmas and your season is well and truly over, you have your cup final on April 15th and thats all you have to look forward to.
As for players leaving, quality players will always get linked to other clubs and always have speculation surrounding them. Its just unfortunate for you that you dont have many that fall in that catogary!!!

I feel sorry for whoever misses out at wembley - but I have no problem with either Cesar OR Barnett getting the nod - both have proven they are capable defenders…

I think Ish pulling out of the U21s is a good decision - just look at how many players are pulling out of the internationals this weekend - its a stupid time to play a friendly.

I hope Brunt is fit for the semi as he will have a field day on the big pitch - he can cause a load of problems with his crosses and his shooting.

Colchester first though - time to start putting the pressure on the top 2… the way things are going we could be top WITHOUT playing our games in hand !!

how as our bubble burst last time i looked our recent form is better than yours.
we are a couple of points off the playoffs with a game in hand. and with the 3 points we get from your lot of bottlers we will make the play offs which is where you will also end up.

    8. There is still everything to play for at Wolves. We can still get promoted. Don’t get cocky it doesn’t
    suit you.

    2. MMDP. I hope you “nuggets” (nice one Mick), have got your “You’ve Let Us Down Again” banners ready for the end of the season again. As for moaning, I’m afraid thats one thing you national award winners beat us on hands down. Ask Mick!!

  16. Baggies77 said:

Funny how we think of the Wolves game as a chance to get 3 points, they see it as there FA Cup Final.
That is the difference between our clubs, they see beeting us as the best thing to happen in ther season.
We just look at the bigger picture.

Wolves fans, whats going to happen to your star players if you dont get promoted?? never mind coming on our boards saying Gera will leave, look mutch closer to home!

mowbray way in style 2 points out of 9? gera, fatty, phillips wanting out hoefkins slating the club things are not looking good. you should stuff colchester but i can see you winning 1-0, what with your free flowing play! or will it be another leicester? winning nothing and getting embarresed at wembley and coming to molineux and getting beaten the mowbray way in style ohhhh yes!

Chaps, opinions are interesting but check the facts. After almst three months this year, who is the more successful team? Yes it is the Mighty Wolves. Do the maths you will see it is a fact.

    21 Malvern.
Yes and if promotion were decided over one game probably Ipswich would go up as champions for putting seven past Bristol City but back in the real world it’s done over a season. Still good try at finding something to be cheerful about.
