Shopkeepers may be banned from displaying cigarettes, if Government proposals are introduced.

The Department of Health is launching a consultation later this spring to look at ways to stop children smoking.
In a bid to cut the number of smokers and prevent children from taking up the habit, ministers have drawn up proposals including a bar on displaying tobacco products and the removal of vending machines from pubs.
Measures that make it easier to sell nicotine replacement gums and patches are also on the table.
The proposals follow on from the introduction of the ban on smoking in public places last July. According to the Department of Health, the strategy - coupled with the wider smokefree legislation - will save hundreds of lives.
Someone who starts smoking aged 15 is three times more likely to die of cancer due to smoking than someone who starts in their late twenties, the department said.

Has prohibition hit the United Kingdom?
What on earth are the goverment up to now?
Why dont these men and women who are meant to be looking after our interest do something more constructive with their time, such as sorting out the over population of our island due to immigrants, drug problems, crime, prostitution.
Seeing a packet of fags isnt going to harm anyone.
God they will have condoms and tampax hidden under counters next!!
This proposal is not before time. I, personally, have long advocated that cigarettes should not be generally advertised.
While resisting the (morally defensible) position of preventing the addicts from harming themselves we should stop short of banning the practice. Efforts should instead make it less likely impressionable people turn to the habit.
I favour the return of the cigarette peddling licence that used to be required and frankly it should be restricted to chemists and a doctor’s prescription should be required to obtain the fags. The packaging should be according to a prescribed pattern…. a dull urine coloured package with the word “POISON” in large letters and the brand name in significantly smaller ones. A single colour (black) for all the print.
Perhaps also cigarettes should be restricted to packets of 5 or less. Every effort should be made to alert the potential smoker to the seriousness of the habit they are indulging in. Tobacconists should be prohibited from advertising the fact they push the drug in any way whatsoever.
pjw you should move to Russia with the present government they like communists there, whatever happened to the freedom in britian, time for a revolution before we are cerfued and armed soldiers walk our streets shooting anything that moves eh?.
Now who won the war and why. wasn’t it all to stop us from being ruled by fascist dictators, seems we didn’t win at all. this country is no longer free. Vote LIBERAL and get our country BACK to how it was with freedom for all
pjw crawl back under your rock unless cigarettes are banned people will smoke if they want they are perfectly legal is that right you also want condoms only to be sold in barber shops
I think phil h should read what I said. i.e. “we should stop short of banning the practice”
meanwhile only a criminal of the worst kind would insist on the right to groom adolescents and children into poisoning themselves.
and condoms should be issued free…
PJW, I gather from your last comment that you have sex but don’t smoke! wouldn’t you be worried that free comdoms would encourage children to have sex? It is my right to smoke should I choose to. If the laws on age were properly inforced children would not be able to buy cigarettes
anyway. I agree with Breeze, polititions time would be better spent sorting out immigrants etc.
It*s just another government scam so so clipboard penpusher can walk around all day and the fine shops who don*t obey !!!!!
Why can*t get thier focus on THIEVES,,,MUGGERS !!! CAR CRIME!!!!!DRUG PUSHERS!!!! MURDERERS,,,!!!!! the list could go on & on….
Looks like yet another job for some Clipboard dogsbody yesman to go around shops and start handing out fines again,,,my local shop has just refibishedhis shop costing £1000,s so now he has to re_fit again,,,,
Can*t these “people” in Government do anything about real issues? i.e. Gun crime mugging, muderers, looks like hitting the soft targets again..
Condoms are issued free.Have been for years.Family planning..
You can get condoms free from the family planning clinic and from some voluntary organisations
JT
One out of two can’t be bad.
No. Free condoms do not encourage children to have sex. Poor parenting does that.
You are effectively saying exactly the same as I do. The law should be enforced. Given there is no definitive way to determine the age of a young person how best would you achieve this? Answer: Remove the offending fags from sight.
How would this impinge on your “right to smoke”? Answer: It would not.
Do you have the right to inflict your exhaled smoke on me? Answer NO!
I think protecting the young from harm is one of the most important things politicians can ever be called upon to do.
Obesity is taking over from tobacco-related illness. Smokers take up less burial ground, maybe a smidge more ash if cremated with a packet of cigs ‘just-in-case’. Let’s shove cakes, bread, bags of sugar, etc. under the counter.
I do, however, advocate protecting children from fags.
Spot on Val.
In a few years time ……….
if you are over a size 12 you wont beable to fit through the new regulation doors, you will have a ration book saying how much food you are allowed for one week and chocolate bars will be on the black market. Police will be busting chocolate pushers!!! We soon wont sell clothes over a size 12.
