Specialist stalls and entertainers could be invited into an ailing Black Country market place to turn around its fortunes.
The proposals are the brainchild of resident Lawrence McGowan who has said Wednesbury’s current market is at death’s door.
He believes its failing fortunes could be transformed by introducing antique, craft and collectables markets as well as a buskers’ corner and children’s rides.
The market has suffered a decline since moving from its home in The Shambles to Union Street in August last year and the opening of the huge new Morrisons superstore in the town.
The market can house around 70 stalls at full capacity, yet has only around half-a dozen regulars.
Market traders have already warned people they need to use it or lose it and Mr McGowan has submitted his suggestions to Wednesbury Town Committee.
He said: “Action is needed to attract both traders and shoppers through specialist markets and events that will produce their own publicity.
Councillor Simon Hackett, whose ward is Friar Park said: “I think Mr McGowan has made some very valid points.”

Wednesbury market as not had a very good trade since it was moved from by the clock tower in the market sqaure. I would sugest that the traders of the market stop selling brickabrac as shoppers would prefaire an original market with desent goods. I use to work in the town and found that I had to go out of town to get a desent market such as Bescot on a Sunday, as they produced an aray of goods from food, clothes DIY etc….Only then will Wednesbury will make the trade. How about a farmers market once a month or even an european market once in a while.
