Albion boss Tony Mowbray was left to reflect on an opportunity missed after his side left with a point from a game he felt they bossed.
Mowbray was happy with his team’s performance in their fourth meeting of the season with Alan Pardew’s Charlton. But he was far less satisfied with the result.
“Ultimately the way the game panned out I think we deserved three points,” said Mowbray.
“That’s football and sometimes you don’t get what you deserve.
“Charlton fought and worked very hard to prevent us getting three points. I’m pleased enough with the way we performed and I thought we deserved better.”
Mowbray led his team into an impromptu post-match huddle on the pitch at The Valley and after the match he explained the reasons for the gesture.
The Baggies boss, who introduced the huddle when he was a player at Celtic, intended to send out a message to fans still shocked by last week’s 4-1 loss to Leicester.
“Sometimes the team needs to show what they’re all about,” said Mowbray. “It was important to show our supporters this team is unified and together.
“Whether we get promotion or don’t get promotion the bigger picture for us is to keep improving individually and collectively.
“We’re trying to play a style of football so that ultimately, when we get to where we want to go, we won’t get found wanting. The team have got to keep believing that’s the right way.
“This league is a very, very competitive league with lots of teams set up to stop other teams playing, and are very abrasive and disruptive. It’s very, very hard to win football matches.
“We believe the right way to play is an expansive game and try and score goals, entertain the public and try and win games in a style and manner that people want to come and watch.
“They threatened with set-plays and they played as well as we allowed them to. Kevin’s name is at the top of the scoring chart and he showed his quality again.”
Mowbray paid tribute to Slovenian defender Bostjan Cesar, who stepped in from the cold to replace the injured Leon Barnett.
He said: “It was a big game for Bostjan because he hasn’t played since Barnsley away, when he didn’t have his best game.
“He’s bounced back and shown his strength of personality and character. He did well and stood his ground well for us.
“He’s had long enough to think about it because it’s been a few weeks since Barnsley.
“If you get an opportunity you’ve got to grab it because if you don’t grab it you don’t play.”
Mowbray reported a clean bill of health despite Carl Hoefkens suffering several knocks during the match.
And he expects to have Sherjill MacDonald back soon following his surgery to repair damaged cartilage.
Mowbray said: “We came through with no real injury problems, which was very important with the problems we’ve got.
“Hopefully from this point we’ll only get stronger because Chris Brunt and James Morrison might be fit for next weekend and maybe the week after that Barnett will be back – things will look brighter.
“Sherjill has had his operation and it went well. He stayed overnight in hospital and he should be back on an exercise bike by Monday.”

What a nasty, spiteful post No.1, SniggeringWolf. I find it beneath my dignity to comment on bad spelling, grammar and use of ? when you mean . It will be interesting to see how The Wulfies get on against Charlton next week. You are in form and winning, they’re not. Should be a good measure of your chances.
sorry fellas it is no longer in your hands. I think the albion have come to a complete halt whilst other sides have maintained there position better and other teams have come into form, deary me another season of forget for the albion.
Cyril - don’t lower yourself mate - these pages are becoming over run by the mindless idiots again - nothing but spite and bile in every post from too many people now.
These people have no ability to swap wit and humour - so just ignore them. There are plenty of decent posters from both clubs to converse with. I used to get into a row with the idiots but its no fun and is just boring - better to let them shout amongst themselves.
Laughing Wolf can you remind me again where are you in the league
MOWBRAY SAID THEY BOSSED THE GAME?…WAS HE ACTUALY WATCHING THE GAME CHARLTON WERE RUNNING RINGS AROUND THEM
Have you Baggies noticed, the comments from Dingly Dell
are becoming more & more caustic & vitriolic every day,
i think banter has left the site!
7 Ken Hawthorn:
I think some of the Causticness is due to the School Holidays.
6. I think a visit to Specsavers is in order for you. I’m sure the eye test will be free for someone clearly as unwell as yourself.
That was not my opinion of westbromwich that was the opinion of your right back who slated the club and area then got found out, i actually think westbromwich is a beautiful area! bong bong bubble bursting! you could do with koumas and kamara on loan!
No 6, gold&black.
I think you should get a proper television
instead of a cornflake box!
BOING BOING.
Cyril, Ken, and others. Got to agree with Happy on this one. Ignore them and they might go away. Humour goes over there heads as does reasonable debate. They are in general too thick to bother with. As I’ve said before, there are Wolves fans, Kent, Malvern etc and there are Dingles, Laughing, Gold & black, Michael and others too numerous to mention. We all know which are which, indeed we have some of our own I’m sad to say.
A draw snatched from the jaws of defeat at The Moll today, but on the positive side it must have a been a thriller to share 6 goals. I shall not mention a defence letting three in at home whilst still having 11 men on the pitch. Could it be that Micklemass is copying our Messiah Mowbray and going for attacking football? It won’t do much for your fingernails Wulfies but at least it won’t bore you to death. Come in and have a splash, the water’s lovely!
laughingwolf Well…that one point was a massive one not ? Status q with Stoke and Watford, and a point gained against Bristol. All in our hands again ( lol ) Warming up for Wembley. Danish Baggie
