Flats for elderly planned for pub site

wd2684730peartree-1-rh-09.jpgMore than 30 flats could be built on the site of a former pub in Rugeley which closed last October after more than 50 years.

The Pear Tree Inn, in Queensway, is to be flattened and replaced by an L-shaped three storey block of 34 flats designed for elderly independent living residents.

The flats will be split into 17-one bedroom flats and 17-two bedroom flats as well as a warden’s office, a communal dining area and catering facilities as well as associated car parking space.

Unlike a residential home the residents will be able to live separately from their neighbours, if they choose, but with the security of nearby staff if needed.

The development is being proposed by Bristol-based developers The Coyne Group. No one from the company was available to comment today but a planning application has been submitted to Cannock Chase Council.

Councillor Tony Williams, who represents the Pear Tree estate said: “It is my understanding that the site will be for elderly independent living. I have seen the plans and I welcome the re-development of the site.

“I hope it will improve the local landscape but I do have some concerns about the traffic at the junction with Hednesford Road. I hope highways will consider improving it more than they already have.”

Councillor Williams added: “I also want to make sure sewage from the site does not link up with the Pear Tree Estate as everyone is aware of the problems on the estate.”

Members of the public can inspect the plans at Cannock Chase Council offices or at the Rugeley Area Office in Anson Street.

Just what Rugeley needs another elderly housing complex!
Rather than keep building more homes how about concentrating on making Rugeley more appealing first to outsiders to bring them there and bring prospect to the area, rather than building homes no one wants to live in because there is nothing to do in the town?
At this rate Rugeley will be the Midlands equivilent of Florida, where all the nice folk go to retire.
