Chasetown in fundraising tie-up

Chasetown FC have become fundraising partners for the Grenadier Guards.

The Scholars, who won national acclaim for their FA Cup run this season, have adopted the Guards as their nominated charity.

Money raised will go to the Guards’ fundraising arm The Colonel’s Fund, which helps relatives of injured serving members.

The agreement follows talks between former Chasetown manager and former Guardsman Mervyn Rowe and the club’s chief executive Mike Joiner.

And through the partnership, the club might now play a friendly match to raise funds for the regiment, of which Prince Philip is colonel.

“Through our success at reaching the last 32 of the FA Cup, each club gets to donate £5,000 to a local charity,” said Mr Joiner.

“We have donated to the County Air Ambulance and Promise Dreams in the past as our nominated charities.

“This a worthy cause – you might not agree with the causes they are fighting for but they’re doing a brilliant job.

“It’s feasible for us to play a fundraising game against the Guards.

“The reason we’re supporting this is because we want to and because the West Midlands is the most densely populated area in the UK for providing people in the armed services.

“If you consider there were two local people killed recently, it’s a highly worthy cause.”
