Wolves blog: Play-off permutations

gray2.jpgIt’s squeaky bum time. We have nine games to go, with the added benefit of six of these being at Molineux, starting tonight with Scunthorpe, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

Gabor Kiraly was kind enough to have an awful game at the weekend and that performance combined with some good fortune meant we came away from one of our favourite stomping grounds with all three points on Saturday.

We haven’t however been able to put any semblance of form together all season. Only once have we strung three wins together in the league and only occasionally have we seen a winning sequence of two.

However, I truly believe that somewhere underneath the dull veneer of the majority of our performances this season, there lies the heartbeat of a good team.

It’s surely not beyond this misfiring team to put enough points together to grab a top six spot, is it?

And then who knows which Wolves team will turn up and compete for a possible place in the Premiership.

I know we can only dream and speculate at this point in the season, but just imagine the final at Wembley with a fit Kights on one flank, Jarvis on the other and SEB up front with Bothroyd, who has returned fresh from scoring 12 in his loan period at Stoke.

Ok, perhaps I am dreaming.  In our remaining nine games we still have to play five matches against teams currently ahead of us in the table.

But in seasons past I can remember Wolves teams who were really only at their best when playing against the better quality teams in this division.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case this season. The majority of our defeats have been against teams fighting for a top six spot.

Teams such as Colchester and Scunthorpe will come to Molineux, stick 10 men behind the ball and hope they can escape with at least a point and maybe even nick a victory.

Theoretically we should have the quality to be able to combat this and turn teams over of this standard.

Or is it that some players perhaps struggle to get motivated to play the smaller teams?

And when the better teams in this division visit Molineux and adopt a more attacking strategy, surely this should play to our strengths and we should have the quality to beat them at their own game?

75 points was good enough for a play-off slot last season. I don’t think we will need as many points to get a top six spot this campaign.

If we did, we would need to win all of our remaining nine fixtures to equal that tally.

I think 70 will probably suffice this season, but that still means a return of 16 points from the final nine games.

Points are much more evenly spread out throughout the division compared to the completed Championship table of 2006 – 2007.

From Stoke at the top with 67 points down to Colchester at the bottom on 33, there is a gap of 34.

Compare that to the finishing table of last season where there was a gap of 52 separating Sunderland down to Leeds.

Ok, the season hasn’t quite reached its climax. But for this season more than any other I can remember, every team in this division seems to be capable of beating the other.

You could put it down to the lack of quality in the teams in the Championship.

Yet three of the remaining teams in the last four of the FA Cup are from this league, so perhaps it isn’t quite as poor as we would all presume.

Talking of the Cup, some Wolves fans seem a little envious with what is going on down the road at Sandwell.

Sure, Albion have played some cracking football this season, scored a zillion goals and reached Wembley.

They are however currently only eight points better off than us and whereas six of our remaining nine games are at home, it’s the reverse situation for them.

They face tricky trips to Charlton, Cardiff, QPR, Blackpool, Norwich and ourselves before their season concludes.

So what would you prefer?  A trip to Wembley in an FA Cup semi-final or a trip to Wembley in the play-off final?

I know we are not even in the top six yet and the final is a long way off.

I just think that the FA Cup is a massive distraction to the Albion and I’m not jealous in the slightest that we are not in their shoes.

Anyway enough about the stripy lot.

I’ve probably given Mick a pretty rough ride since the turn of the year in my blogs.

And before you think I’ve gone all fluffy again, I haven’t.

But now is surely the time to give him and the boys our full backing and create some real vocal support for that one final push towards the play-offs?

It’s no coincidence that the majority of our good results are currently coming away from Molineux where perhaps the players are free from the shackles of the expectant home crowd.

I know many of us are unhappy with some of the dire games played out at Molineux this season, but that anxiety from the fans is finding itself onto the pitch and is obviously affecting players’ confidence.

We have always had an amazing away support and for the majority of this season those fans have backed the players and created an atmosphere that has been sadly lacking of late at Molineux.

I know it can be difficult to really get behind the team when games have lacked that intrinsic entertainment factor of late, but I think the players really need to hear that the crowd still believes.

We have a good chance to repeat the three wins in a row we achieved back in October with tonight’s fixture and then the visit of in-form QPR at the weekend.

I don’t expect tonight’s game to be a footballing feast and I’ll settle for a scrappy 1-0 if it keeps us on track.

Good luck to the boys tonight and Andy I’ll see you in the Clarendon around 6:30pm.

I’d rather be concentrating on the league than on the FA cup, which I think ultimatley will be sandwell’s downfall, we’ve had our wobble they’ve just started their’s, I can see them struggling to make the playoff’s, how good would it be if we overhaul them and snatch the last playoff spot by one point and they finish 7th, revenge is a dish best served cold, as for wolves well 3 points tonight is a must and saturday too, hopefully we’ll have Kite’s back soon and what a massive boost to the team that will be. All Wolves fans must put aside their feelings towards Mick and get behind the team and get us into the playoff’s.

    Sorry but we already have 54pts add 9 wins = 9×3=27 hence 54 + 27 = 81pts (not 75)?

Also worth pointing out that of our last 7 games 5 are against teams in the current top 9 places,

Amazing what a win does isn’t it!

It’s customary as a Wolves fan to get carried away and build your hopes up on the back of a good win or two, only to be let down again at the final hurdle…but whats the fun in being a Wolves fan if it’s all going to be predictable?!

I do agree with you Nathan. We have the nucleus of a good hungry team. Regardless of what happens this year, we badly need a young pacey centre half in the mould of Jolean Lescott. Not wanting to dwell on the past, but if we had kept him this year I think we’d have made it. With Kites and Jarvis on the wings, and SEB up front, dare I say it, banging in the goals a la Bully, I think the only other thing missing is a GOOD defensive midfielder who will STAY there. Asking George to play in that position is ridiculous. If he’s not going to use his size advantage to put in tackles, why’s he there?

Someone like Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Thomas Gravesen…that kind of player, and I think we’re there!

I hope we don’t stumble again tonight for the sake of the team and the manager.

come on Wanderers, time to show that Saturday’s performance was no flash in the pan. Our last twelve league games (since the turn of the year) have resulted in 5 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats – although form hasn’t been great it could be worse (eg Albion) so if we can find the consistency that we have thus far lacked then who knows what could happen..

On another note, I see that young Hearts centre-half and captain Christophe Berra (who we were linked with last week after MM was spotted watching a Hearts match) has just been called up to the senior Scotland squad. I had a look on the Hearts website to check his credentials and he sounds like a very good prospect – young, ambitious and quick. Hopefully the wheels can be put in motion to sign him up at the end of the season…

Wolves find themselves in a similar position to the Baggies, in that i mean that you feel like you are one loss away from the end of the road, (Wolves the play-offs and us chasing automatic).
If we lose to Charlton and other results go against us although we would not give up the fight we would be facing an up hill battle, same goes for the Wolves. Games in hand are great if you win them, lose them and it is a different story.

I know the anti Mick fans will slate me for this but here goes…….

Mick starts the season and knows form previous experience what is required to get out of this division, he plays ugly football all season but manages to get into the play-offs hitting some form just at the right time. This good form carries them through the play-offs and promotion is gained.
First target acheived, he then (again through experience) knows what is required to stay up in the first season, he changes the style and signs a number of players, Wolves stay up, the fans are almost happy, and Mick has acheived his plans.
Along the way he has been criticised by his own fans, and some players, but is knowledge , experience and dogged persistence results in him and Wolves acheiving their collective goals.

Good rallying call for all Wolves fans Nathan. I think you’re right it’s time to put the ‘Get Rid of Mick’ mentality (at least for now !!) and get right behind the team whether they play ugly or not. Personally (like one or two others) I think it’s a tough task that lies ahead of us now and if we were to reach the ‘promised land’ a good deal of money would have to be spent immediately – not in the January transfer window when it’s too late.

Just as an aside me and my lad went round the Molineux on Friday night and spotted an advert facing the North Bank which featured the wording “A Goal is Priceless” what a thing to have in the ground when we have so much trouble scoring !! For a laugh I said to my lad if I take a photo of that (which I did) it’ll lift the hoodoo on our goal scoring !! What happened ? We scored 3, the Baggies conceded 4 and Bristol City lost in to the bargain !! Needless to say that picture is staying here in Bristol, we are going to continue rattling in the goals (hopefully, fingers crossed etc etc), the Baggies & Bristol City and any one else above us is going to start falling apart !!

happening. As many have said this is a poor league and this team (not all of them) haven’t IMO shown a great deal of pride in wearing the wolves colours. Inconsistency, poor team selection, injuries and a lack of fight on the pitch have killed it for me. Should the unbelievable happen and we do make the play offs and then gain promotion to the Prem are we really good enough to stay there, the simple answer for me is NO we are years off being good enough.

Our problem was financial backing which we didn’t have. I agree that this current team wouldn’t survive in the premiership but we now have Steve Morgans money to help us purchase a few more players then our last outing.

The Wolves boss admits the time for ’sexy’ football is over as he attempts to make the play-offs.

His side have a chance of edging closer to the top six against Scunthorpe tonight – and he warned it’s not going to be pretty.

Don’t mean to put a damper on your optimism, Nate, mate; but surely you are aware that the Easter weekend is traditionally the death-knell of Wolves’ seasonal aspirations.

Hi everyone, good blog Nathan, we do need to get behind
the team tonight but lets not get carried away with ourselves,
playing 6 games at home will bring its own pressures and like
you all say teams will come and make it difficult at the Mol.

I hope we make the playoffs as that in itself will be some
achievement given the poor performance season we have had.
I’m not too sure about going up to the prem though
as we will need more than SM’s money to be able to
buy well and sustain a Prem status, but lets leave that
debate until we do make it.

Lets get behind the boys tonight and cheer em on for
    3 more points hopefully!!

9.S*U*P*E*R said “It’s customary as a Wolves fan to get carried away and build your hopes up”
How true is that! I think the majority of Wolves fans have agonised the whole season and are looking for the slightest sign of success…and the win at Burnley definately was that.

I’ve been Mick’s critic of late but have always said if he can come up with a convincing performance then I’ll be back on board. Burnley was certainly a huge improvement.

So all aboard the good ship McCarthy?

Why are you all having a go atSUPERSTARDJWOLVES. Leave him be he, as a paying customer, has every right, just as you do, to his opinion. I also support Wolves, and have done for 35 years and seen it all. I also want that muppet out big time. I also agree that we do have a good team waiting to get out and it is my opinion that they are being suffocated by that yorkshire muppet. If I ran my business the way that muppet runs the Wolves I would not have my workers for long and therefore no business.
Sorry for the long rant and by the way good blog Natham, but I cant agree with you about play offs. Don’t think we will have a chance. So now I imagine I will be villified by Jonah – 21…..??????? If he knows what that means….

nathan – you say that some of the fans anxiety finds it’s way onto the pitch, which is very true. I’m glad you realise it, I just wish you would stop adding to this with your blogs. As a fan you have every right to voice your opinions however as a writer (of sorts) you have more responsibility and as such should be more focused on the positives IMHO. Your negativity in previous blogs has not helped. We need to stand together for the good of the club, through thick and thin.

I don’t agree with some of mms signings and team selection. The one thing i will not do is boo any player wearing the colours it’s about time wolves supporters did just that and motivate our team at home and try to let our team play without the abuse they receive at the slightest mistake.

You can’t be blind to some of the rubbish football we have played this season, can you?

I’ve written countless blogs this season and they reflect how I and many others feel about the current team.

I certainly do not have any responsibilty to happy clap my way through my blog and keep the fans positive.

If I feel McCarthy has been useless, then I’ll say so. I have more of a responsibility to be honest and true, rather than just be oblivious to what is going on at the club.

I backed Mick up until December when things started going sour.

My blog is my opinion and has nothing to do with the club or the express and star. That’s the whole point of a blog. For me to express an opinion and then for people to discuss.

And the whole direction of this particular blog was to try and say to fans, look we all know Mick is a useless manager, but lets put that to one side and get behind the team for one final push towards the top 6.

I have Wolves running through my blood as I’m sure you do and I only want whats best for the club. Can you honestly say that you would want to watch a team run by Mr McCarthy next season, if he repeats what he has done this season?

Thanks for your comments, but I’m afraid I’m a stubborn sod and I will therefore continue to write MY opinions in the blog.

    Cheers, Nathan.

MM gets very well paid to do his job and has only got himself to blame for creating more “expectation” from the fans – by making announcements in the media that he is “more than happy” with his squad and also a “Top Two” finish?

MM and Moxey also have no clue about PR and certainly do not endear themselves to the fans by being extremely predictable and pouring scorn on the “expectations of fans” or “Mick’s Nuggets” comments – which will be one of the infamous sayings that will rank up there like Sir Jack’s “Golden Tit” remarks

Anyone that makes a public statement of their intent and then produces a debarcle of endless tripe out on the field of play can expect no less than what they have received

As many have already said, this league is very poor – and probably one of the best chances any team has had to make its mark

We hopefully will get into the Play Offs, But again winning matches is the key – Home or Away, we always cheer on the lads – Even if we dont believe that MM is the right man and that Moxey has no abillity to cope in the Premier league either

We dont agree with ANY booing whatsoever BUT we do agree with everyone having their right on here to voice their opinions – whatever they are!
IF the players cannot handle criticism they should give up their rather large salaries and try going and finding a real job that pays them a salary that they could not afford to run their supercars on never mind a roof over their heads!
As Bill Shankly once said – these players need to go out infront of thousands of fans each week and perform – they should not have enough time on their hands to worry about what the fans are saying or not saying during a game (Meaning focus on your job NOT the crowd)

You keep on Nathan – Very interesting reading

Finally, all this “eating humble pie” rubbish? Up to the recent wins we have had have deserved criticism and again expectations were raised by MM himself and his proclamation of a Top Two finish or have we conveniently forgotten all about that?

UP THE WOLVES!!! Happy Easter one & all!

ROLLERCOASTA i feel pretty much the same about mick and the type of football and tactics employed by him this season but we really do need to put those feelings to one side (for now)and get behind the team i cannot my team to lose whatever the reason and i think you’ll be thinking the same when we line up against the stripey lot soon with a chance of premiership footy at steak and all the cash&glory to go with it.if there’s a chance we have to get behind the lads and support them all the way even though the football aint been pretty but i’d rather win ugly than lose or draw playing pretty.at this stage of the season that’s all that matters.SO COME ON YOU WOLVES 2-1 WIN TOMORROW.

Nathan, the comment that spoilt it for me was “look we all know Mick is a useless manager”.
He’s made mistakes but “useless”? – we all don’t think that (not me anyway).
