Luke Harris, who died after being shot at the Bagot Arms in Whitmore Reans on Saturday, was fired at in a flat in Chervil Rise, Heath Town, in February 2001.
Then aged 20, he was shot above the collarbone and a bullet lodged in his abdomen.
Three men went on trial for his attempted murder, including career criminal Marcus Bailey of Merry Hill, who was jailed for life last year for shooting Wolverhampton policeman Geoff King.
Also accused was Michael Osbourne, the leader of the Heath Town-based UDC gang who was jailed for at least 27 years in January for killing drug dealer Kevin Nunes.
But the trial in November 2001 at Wolverhampton Crown Court had to be to abandoned over claims witnesses were too afraid to give evidence.
Mr Harris, aged 26, died on Saturday from a single bullet wound to the chest following the shooting at 1.45am.
Sources have also said Mr Harris was known by police and moved in the same circles as some of Wolverhampton’s most notorious drug dealers.

In response to RESS supporter’s comments -
I’m sure the first poster had engaged his brain - I for one second it. Yes this guy and others like him are all someone’s son. And I’m sure their parents would be so proud of them, living the lives they do. No doubt they will be missed by somebody, whether that be their fellow gang members or the junkies that used to by drugs from them - Who knows?
Howvere, they certainly won’t be missed by the majority of honest hard working people of Wolverhampton!
And for those who will say ‘you don’t what it’s like on the streets, man’ - do you realise how much of a pathetic excuse that it?
