Wolves striker goes on loan

jay.jpg

Out-of-favour Wolves striker Jay Bothroyd today joined Championship rivals Stoke on a month’s loan.

Bothroyd – without a Wolves start since the FA Cup disaster at Cardiff – has been allowed to leave after boss Mick McCarthy told him other strikers are ahead of him in the pecking order.

He joined promotion chasing Stoke today and goes straight into their squad for the top of the table clash with Watford after being told he would not be figuring for Wolves at Burnley.

Bothroyd’s departure is the first of an expected exodus of forwards from the striker-laden squad, but McCarthy refused to be drawn on his long-term future.

“Jay hasn’t been involved here and I told him that if he wants to play regular football he’d have to go out on loan.

“At the moment there are people in front of him in the pecking order,” he said.

“(Stoke boss) Tony Pulis was looking for someone because I think Mamady Sidibe has a hamstring and Jay wants football.

“We haven’t talked about anything permanent at the moment – it’s a month’s loan.”

With Stoke stretching ahead of Wolves in the race for automatic promotion from the Championship, McCarthy decided to sanction the loan because the Potters’ form will not affect their play-off hopes.

It is not the first time Bothroyd has been made available for transfer – he turned down a move to Hull earlier in the season in order to fight for his place.

But with no prospect of a first-team start in the near future, he has opted to leave the club he signed for in the summer of 2006.

“A few clubs from League One came in for him but he didn’t want to go to that level,” McCarthy said.

“There were one or two inquiries from the Championship as well but Stoke came in for him and they’re not in competition with us so I let him go there.”

Stephen Elliott iss a doubt for tomorrow’s trip to Burnley after twisting his ankle. Matt Jarvis has been laid low by the sickness bug sweeping Molineux.

You just don´t loan players to a rival club in a situation like this unless he´s told to score owngoals. Just another example that shows how poor this club is run.

At the moment after watching such crud performances this season I find myself not really caring or looking forward to the next few games. Im struggling today to phone up and get my early bird and ive had a season ticket for 10 years now. I am thinking of waiting until the Summer as im fed up of investing a Premiership sized amount of money and watching a second rate management staff mess it up. (and that includes Moxey too) Morgan, where are you?? Do you own the club or have an opinion??

Mick you are a IDIOT you do not loan players to clubs above you in the table. Questions must be ask of Mick and his management team.

Makes sense to me. Stoke are 11 points clear of us and we have no realistic chance of catching them up.

IF (and that’s a big if!) we are still in the playoff hunt, then maybe he scores a winner against Palace for them to help us (on the basis that Bristol City and Watford - the only other sides in the top half Stoke have left to play - are also uncatchable).

good ridannce, just kyle elliot and ward to go, then start off loading more deadwood from the midfield and defence.

Maybe MM is trying to repeat history. JB will play three games for Stoke - score 10 goals in those games and Mick will suddenly recall him - he will then go on to be your best player.

    Well it worked with Craddock….

This has to be the most bizarre season in my living memory!

I can’t understand it, why would the club want to send our most talented youngsters and some of our better players out on loan?

The best strikers at the club are; SEB, Bothroyd, Keogh and Eastwood. Why not sent Elliot or Ward, or for that matter anybody at all too one of our main rivals!

This is absolutely ridiculous, they’ve gone stark raving mad!

Perhaps they have given up on the season?

Re 8 - do you seriously, honestly consider us to be ‘promotion rivals’ to Stoke? If so, you need to wake up and smell the caw-fee mate, we are nowhere near Stoke and thus they cannot be considered our rivals. If we had loaned Bothroyd out to Ipswich, Hull, Plymouth or Burnley then I would be concerned, but as it stands him going to Stoke is entirely irrelevant. I’m no fan of MM but it seems you are now just having a pop at him for the sake of it, which is pretty sad in my book…

There are other forwards at the club who should have been sent out on loan ahead of him… but I guess no one else would have them…

Bet he gets a bag full of goals at stoke…

Good luck to him… is this the start of the players getting out because they can’t get on with MM?

Personally im glad Bothroyd has gone and fingers crossed he never returns but to loan a forward to on e of your rivals is beyond stupidity

You have lost the plot Mick, thanks for last season but its time too go and get some fresh ideas into the team instead of buying half of sunderlands promotion and relegation team from a few years ago.

I have to say you are pretty naive in your comments, while I agree it is difficult for us to catch Stoke, they are still going to be playing teams that will have a bearing on our season. So, sending them a player that will improve their team is a serious blunder!

  29. unrealwolf said:

    What a bizarre decision.

Why loan a Player out to a promotion rival, Yes bottom of table club, but not top six.

We have become the official laughing stock club of the division now.

What else have we got to endure this season.

McCarthy Out, Moxey Out, Morgan Out(or is he already out watching Liverpool training or something).

  30. abdonwolf said:

I agree, he is a creative player and with Kightly out we have a serious lack of quality in that department.

    This is real stupidity!

  31. John De Wolf said:

This makes no sense, we shouldn’t be helping out any team who are in the top half! Whether or not people like or dislike Bothroyd, he still shouldn’t be sent out on loan to a team that could take one of our play off positions! MM obviously thinks we can get in the play off without him, so if we do then that’s great. However, if we don’t then he should go, as nearly all of his decisions this season have made no sense, and it’s done nothing but anger supporters. I have never known such a stubborn manager. If he was getting results then we couldn’t argue but our results this year have been relegation form, yet still our best players are either on the bench or out on loan! Keep up the good work Mick, if results continue like this, then you’ll be out next season, so you’re doing us a favour! Maybe you should try sending, Potter, Elliott, Kyle and S Ward out on loan, that would make us a better team!

  32. Ru said:

Is this Deja Vu with Bothroyd instead of Craddock?! In a way I think MM is staking his reputation a little bit on on this. He’s already admitted the mistake loaning Craddock. If Bothroyd does the business (and I believe he is our most talented striker on his day)it’s not going to reflect too well on him. It will be interesting, though, as my mind is not made up on why Bothroyd hasn’t been so good this season. Is the blame at his own feet or is it the changes in style of play/tactics/formations and other factors such as being picked on by MM in the media etc.

  33. andy said:

McCarthy cannot believe that we still have chance of making the playoffs. Bothroyd could score the goal that takes Stoke up instead of us.

  36. jamesderbyshire said:

First of all, Stoke play the long ball dont they? I’m sure Bothroyd will love that! What a strange signing!

What I have really struggled with this season is the passion in football. It’s not just at wolves either. Im only 26 and I am starting to find hard to remember a time when football was all about passion, characters and about FOOTBALL. Nowadays, the papers carry headlines about money, refs, technology, blatter, sex scandals, tackles, bungs, ticket prices, crowd violence and diving. Even goal of the month on MOTD has been cut down to 6 o 7 goals so that spare time can be given to the pundits to moan about whether adebayor was tripped or blown over by the recent gales.

A lot of this is applicable to wolves. I have been given a cracking book about wolves called ‘Those were the days, wolves 1964 to 1977′. A lot of it were hard times following a huge amount of success. The stories are all about difficulty at molineux, hammerings and the occasional bit of joy. I AM SO JEALOUS OF THOSE DAYS! Full houses, people working all week to enjoy it, no saft crowd trouble, CHARACTERS, PASSION, FOOTBALL! NO MONEY OR PANSIES!

We have now found ourselves with a wolves envoiroment that is a real example of love/hate. We all love to say we love the wolves but I think a lot of people love to hate them at the same time, I hope that makes sense. We all love a good moan, its human nature and its a lot easier to moan about wolves when they are doing BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS. But how are we meant to snap out of this mentality and get back to the way we were last season, cheering on the lads at 6-0 down at home against southampton? Its bloody difficult, i know, and its because of what i listed earlier that is written in the media and surrounds us everyday, coupled with our own human nature and the fact that we dont get enough sex from our missus’.

We may all feel cheated this season after being promised that youth would be given a try. Well, fact is, youth did get its chance last season and it didnt meet our expectations. We wolves fans want premiership football. Now. Mick obviously thought we had not got that extra bit that was needed with our youth players to meet our demands and has looked elsewhere. Problem is, he has made mistakes in his purchases. Now 90% of fans want him gone or question every decision he makes because it appears we are not where we were last season. Truth is, we are exactly where we were last season; the championship, and this league is so incredibley difficult, ask Ian holloway, bryan robson etc etc. Plus, if he had sticked with the littles, jones’, gleeson’s etc and chances are we would be in exactly the same position, we’d still be hammering Mick and probably those young undeveloped lads too! I know youth needs a chacne but this season wasnt the right season for them to do it at wolves. Look what fergie does with his kids. Play a little, loan out to lower, bring them into the team.

I could go on and on and keep listing all things that are circling in my head but I could be here all day and I am sure a lot of you feel the same. If anyone has any ideas other than sack the manager to bring the passion back to our football, please post it. I say anything other than sack the manager because we all know that that doesnt work.

  37. southbank barmy army said:

perhaps that’s mcarthy’s master plan to get us into the play off’s. start loaning our players out to the teams above us, stuff up their promotion challenge so we can catch them.

that’s stoke taken care of, can’t see them scoring again this season. now we just need kyle shipped off to the albion, ward to hull and elliot to charlton, then our play off hopes will take a big boost.

  38. Guybrush Threepwood said:

Lay of McCarthy on this one. It doesn’t matter that
Bothroyd has gone to Stoke as we are clearly not going
to catch them in the league. Most wolves fans realise
Bothroyd is not good enough so let him go and drag
Stokes performances down. If he performs well then fair
play to him… then hopefully someone will take him off
our hands permanently in the summer! With Kyle returning
to Coventry as well then hopefully our main three best
forwards will get more regular games together (Eastwood,
    Keogh, and E.B.Blake)

Abdonwolf - the only team that Stoke play between now and the end of the season that are likely to effect our own placing is Crystal Palace (and if Bothroyd scores for Stoke against Palace to help them win then surely we will be happy - no?). If you seriously believe that Stoke are our rivals for promotion then it is you who is naive, my friend. As I said before, the only way loaning Bothroyd out would have a detrimental effect on Wolves is if it was to one of our rivals for a play-off spot - either that or he continues to play in our reserves, with the occasional 1st team appearance from the bench. Invariably this would result in him wandering round the pitch looking as disinterested as ever, with perhaps the odd boo from the South Bank for good measure. I want McCarthy out just as much as you do but let’s be honest - no matter what he does now, certain elements of our support will criticise him regardless of whether he makes a good or bad decision. It just seems a little bit childish to slate him for making a decision that ultimately will have very little bearing on how our season pans out…

  42. Wandering Star said:

33- are you sure that Bothroyd cant shoot…

Saying that sacking managers doesn’t work is not correct. When you have signed the wrong manager, then you get rid of him before he can do anymore damage. That applies to all businesses, not just football.

The problem here is not sacking managers, it’s the inability of Moxey to pick and support the correct quality of manager.

Somehow, Moxey always comes out smelling of roses, but his track-record is one of serial-failure as far as Stoke and Wolves are concerned.

Interesting post I especially like the bit about adebayor!

Not so sure about your assessment of the youth policy. If we played so well last year using young players then why should this year been any worse? Surly they would be gaining experience in our team and we would be receiving the benefit of it!

Also, I don’t buy all the Man U. Ferguson analogy’s that lots of people on here use. They are literally in a different league to clubs like Wolves. Their young players are better before they start and their first team is populated with international superstars!

    As for:

“anything other than sack the manager because we all know that that doesnt work.”

    Do we all know that?

Sometimes it is wrong to sack the manager and sometimes it is right. It was right to sack Hoddle, it was wrong to sack Jones but we are always wiser with hindsight!

McCarthy has managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and deserves to be sacked. He has sent the team back 20 years in his short 18 months, but that is just my opinion, I would never presume that it is gospel!

Obviously Mad Mick and co have decided we are NOT going to make the play-offs - although this news will not be made public - and we will now go through the motions until the season ends. So go pay your money like good boys and girls, don’t complain about the football, get your ‘early-birds’ before they sell out and enjoy the rest of the season!

    No!

Well, might if I was in division 1 or 2!

To be fair, I think Elliot is probably a lot better than he looks at present. In the right team with the right formation he would probably score a few. But using him like this is hopeless!

Shame I gave you the benefit of the doubt on today’s ramblings, eh? Bothroyd is creative and talented, that is not in question here - however his attitude and aptitude are quite frankly an embarrassment. I’m sure you can see that… anyway, I’ve had enough of you too. Let’s never talk again! hahahahaha….

In Moxey’s time (to my knowledge) he has appointed Colin Lee, Dave Jones, Glenn Hoddle and Mick McCarthy (as well as John Ward and Stuart Gray (*2) as caretakers, but these cannot be taken into consideration). Which makes it 4 by my estimation… right, it really is time for lunch now!

Rant over I expect to be called happy clapper by at least one brainiac, as again I’m going to state that sacking of this manager at this point in time would not be the right way to go

so the team in 2nd wants to loan a stricker from the team in 11th who cant score (apart from SEB) and the player cant get a place on the bench seems to me that mccarthy doesnt know what hes doing anymore, ive tried to back him for as long as possible but this is another decision that could be added to a long list of odd ones this season

i think bothroyd is lazy but hes 10 times the player kyle is i think he can still do a job for us i also think him and eastwood will be off in the summer if mccarthy is still manager there faces obviously dont fit for different reasons,

TerryWalsallWolf - Let me spell this out for you. We have tried the hiring and firing of managers before, it has got us nowhere. Agreed performances and results have been very dissapointing but what Newbridge wolf is saying is that sacking the manager NOW is completely counter productive. We all share your frustrations but surely the time for criticism is after the season NOT during it, when the players need our support. Wolves would be a much stronger unit if we were all pulling in the same direction. SUPPORT the team. If you really feel the need to vent your angst then may i suggest you scream at the person nearest to you in the dole queue until the voices tell you to stop.

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season I cannot account for, what has happened prior to this has already paid for my season ticket, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed what I have seen and believe it’s money well spent, and irrelevant on whether we are Premiership or Championship I will renew my season ticket, and if thats for Championship football i will of course be dissapointed at first, but my love of watching West Brom will continue and for that I do not need to worry.

I don’t remember saying that we should sack anybody, I just asked a question. But thank you very much for spelling that out for me!

Hiring and firing has got us and plenty of clubs somewhere. For instance, we sacked Colin lee, and appointed Dave Jones, result was promotion. There, hows that for a positive example?

The thing that amazes me about ‘happy clappers’ like you is that because your argument is so weak you have to resort to personal attacks of the ‘dole queue’ variety!

Just for your information I am not frustrated at all and I suggest you read and understand my post properly before you embarrass yourself again!

There is an accountancy problem here.

A team that are 2nd want to acquire a player from a team that are 11th that they consider he is not worth sitting on the bench.

The relative valuations of these two teams are totally out of relation.

Obviously, one of these two teams has got the valuation of the player totally wrong. Now, would that be the successful club who are 2nd, or the failing club who are 11th?

  129. Pelsall Wolf said:

I really hope Jay gets a bagful of goals for all sorts of reasons. He was badly treated at the start of the season. I think he was top scorer in the pre-season matches before the Reading game I think, then he came on and scored against Reading (after Elliott had missed three one on one chances against the goalie in the first half), gets hauled off and told off for his celebrations and then has to listen to McCarthy prattle on about Keogh and Elliott being his preferred strikers (despite not scoring many) and being a different class. Not the best way to inspire someone who made major contributions last season (Leeds and WBA to name only two).
The seeds of the disaster that this season has become were sown right at the start. How different might it have been if we had beat Watford. We might have beat them if we had started the match with Eastwood (assuming he was fit - I can’t remember)and Bothroyd up front and then given them an extended run to forge a decent partnership. But no, we start with players who aren’t as good, aren’t playing as well and continue in a similar vein all year.
Bothroyd is one of the most skilful players we have. The stick he gets from the fans is out of all proportion to what he does wrong.
Good luck Jay. I for one will miss you.

If we got Kightly and Jarvis on the wings too then we would have the best attack in the division. But MM will prob stick to 4-5-1 with Kyle making an impact as a sub (not)
