Car hunt after hit-and-run death

Surti newsagentsThe car believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run which left a popular Walsall newsagent dead has been identified by police.

West Midlands Police said a light-coloured Mercedes C Class, caught on CCTV, may have killed Musharraf Surti, of Surti Newsagents, Broadway West, on Monday. They  said it would have had “significant front end damage” after the 5.49am collision.

Inspector Steve Willetts said: “After looking through CCTV images and speaking to witnesses we believe that we have identified the vehicle involved the collision which resulted in Mr Surti’s death.

“The car is a light-coloured Mercedes C Class, which would have had significant front end damage.

“We appeal for anyone who may have seen this vehicle, or for the driver himself to come forward and speak to us

“Mr Surti’s family has been devastated by his death and they deserve to know what happened to him.”

His family has appealed for anyone with information relating to the 51-year-old’s death to contact police.

In a statement they said: “We appeal for information to be passed to the police in order that Musharraf’s wife, six children and extended family can be informed as to how he was killed.

“Musharraf was a hardworking family man of good character within the community and we hope that someone can pass information as to what happened to him.”

A post mortem examination yesterday confirmed Mr Surti died OF multiple injuries consistent with being in a road traffic collision.

After his death, the shop was closed and has remained shut since. Friends and colleagues have been laying flowers outside the popular shop while others have paid tribute to him.

Police are keen to speak to anyone with information about the collision, or the vehicle believed to have been involved. Anyone with information should call Walsall police on 0845 113 5000.
