Handy Andy to repair season

Andy KeoghMick McCarthy is ready to unleash Andy Keogh at Turf Moor after praising his impact as a substitute.

The Molineux hitman has been impressive after stepping off the bench in Wolves’ last two games – scoring a fine goal at Preston to build on a good display against Southampton. Wolves boss McCarthy admits he withdrew Keogh from action because he wasn’t scoring enough, but two excellent cameo appearances have put him in line for a recall.

Keogh is battling with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Kevin Kyle, Jay Bothroyd and Freddy Eastwood for a starting role at Burnley – with McCarthy toying with a move back to two up front.

“Andy came on and made a good impact. That was the impact I wanted from him having left him out of the side,” he said.

“He has just got on with his job since he’s been left out and I’ve been happy with the way he’s responded.”

With McCarthy choosing to play a 4-5-1 formation in Wolves’ last five away games, Keogh has had to play second fiddle to Ebanks-Blake.

The Wolves boss explained his decision to drop Keogh was because of his goal ratio, which was low at the start of the season.

It has improved since the turn of the year, and McCarthy is keen for that to continue after his goalscoring impact against Preston.

“If you look at his goals scored this season it’s not been enough,” he said.

“If he adds that to his game he’s a brilliant player because his all round game is terrific in terms of his pace, his workrate and what he brings to the team. ”

To be honest Mick, you dropped Keogh when he had scored something like 5 goals in 4 games. Neverhteless, glad to hear this news. When you have got a player like Keogh, you need to build the team around him. Quality player, that just lacked that goal-scoring touch. Maybe he is finding that touch now.

What I dont understand is that he scored five goals last season, which was obviously sufficient as Mick played him regularly. Stuttering start this time nad Mick starts him. Then the goals start to go in and he’s dropped…

    Anyways, some good news here!

We will need more than handy andy. There by hangs the problem, we are sadly lacking in goalscorers apart from SEB and the occasional one from AK and the very odd one from Elliot where are the goals coming from.

Unfortunately the defence isn’t doing too well either. All this means CHAMPIONSHIP next season and likely the one after that.

I still don’t see a settled team, goals or respectable defence. True we have some good young players, but so do Arsenal - young players that play with passion, score goals and defend like their lives depend on it and play with spirit and commitment.

    What are we to do?

Hey, Muppet Mick is going for the Pay Offs…that’s right the pay off’s whereby he constantly picks the worst teams, plays the worst football and is arrogant and stuborn. Jez then gives him an improved contract and he gets a fat payout for failure. Nice one Moxey, Nice one Wolves!

Dead man walking MM, this block is a complete idiot.
Younger managers are making mad Mick look stupid, its like we are back in the Late 80s/early 90s.
And Eddie build a team round Keogh sorry dont see that, dont think that this lad is the quality needed
to get in the prem, and thats what the building should be all about.

IMO Keogh should play every single game, he makes things happen for us.

He creates chances, runs his heart out, hurries defenders and never gives up.

He may not sore many goals but he will score 10-12 goals a season if you play him every game as well as setting up just as many.

Him and Kightly were the two making it happen for us last season.

  10. wolvowiggy89 said:

so keogh’s an impact sub player, why don’t you keep him like that, bring him on for last 20-30mins of every game cus he’s full of energy n makes a difference, n start someone like bothroyd anlongside ebanks-blake?! and mick we are wolves we should be going to places 4-4-2 every week looking for the win bcus we’re not the likes of burnley but we soon will be if you don’t clear off!! and for god sake karl henry is useless, surely gleeson would do a better job.

It is a must win, so we need to be as attacking as we can.
Injuries permitting this is the side I would go with:-

Hennessey Foley Craddock Breen Elokobi Elliot Olifijana Edwards Jarvis Keogh Ebanks-Blake

And before any of you have a go, we cannot carry on with Collins, we have both of our quality wide men injured and we have little choice but to recall George. Henry and Potter needs dropping and Gibson has been disappointing.
Mick must tell them that they are playing for their shirts and to be here next season!

muppet mick says koegh’s goal ratio has not been good this season,ok he’s right but neither have the other strikers either apart from sylvian, but im sure given a decent run in the team and i know a lot of fans keep saying it, but muppet has to play FREDDIE. PS.MCARTHY OUT,THIS HAS TO BE THE WORST FOOTBALL IVE SEEN IN MY 38 YEARS AS A WOLVES FAN,WORSE THAN THE BHATTIS.

“unleash Andy Keogh” is thatlike the Taliban announcing they are to unleash Mounted Camels …

Keogh, to be fair, is a good player, but lacking experience, now the headline “Mick Ready to unleash Freddy” would have raised an eyebrow or two…

Mick, honestly, no one knows what the hell you are doing, or closer to the point, what you are still doing at our club.

Of course Elliott has an awesome goalscoring record! One set of rules for your favourites another set for the outsiders!

  16. wath wanderer said:

As far as I can see the only players who are likely to score on a regular basis is those who have proved it on a regular basis by their records and that is SEB and Freddy. AK’s okay for his effort and his movement but he don’t know where that sprout bag is on a regular basis, he was the provider at sunny scunny not the main man that was Billy Sharp. But an impact player off the bench? I don’t think so.

  17. shatpank81wolves said:

at start of season, mick said he knew keogh didnt score a lot, but wasnt bothered because of work rate was so good!!! DROPPED when he didnt score, but was scoring, if you know what i mean.
then he said freddy needs to up his work rate and not just score!!!DROPPED because he was scoring and didnt want to run about.
then he comes out and says players are what they are, dont try and turn them into something else, they are what they are! speaking about kyle.
so hang on players are what they are, dont try and change them??????
this confirms to me MM (mad Mick) as lot the plot. every week he changes what he says.

Freddy has Impressed every time he has come off the bench, yet he doesnt even get a mention.

SEB, Freddy and Keogh are a force to be reckoned with - WE CAN ALL SEE IT WHY FIOR THE LOVE OF COMMON SENSE ARE WE FORCED TO WITNESS THIS BS ???????

  20. Dynamo Wolf said:

What did he say, all I heard was Blah blah blah blah.

So far he has dropped strikers just when they have hit form and then came up with a poor excuse.
Or I played so and so because he puts a good shift in and works hard. Goals! Goals win games. Winning games = a better position in the league.

But then there is no point scoring 9 goals to concede 10, owing to the poor defending.

  21. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

MM just talks out of arse! How can we keep a consistent team if he keeps dropping players and then recalling him. Play players who are good in systems, not drop them will nilly.

I do believe is AK is a good player but as an out and out striker, he would do well sit in behind the front two of SEB & Freddie with Kites, Gleeson & Jarvis as a 3 man midfield. Gleeson as the holding player pulling the strings. It would also give licence for Foley & Gray to bomb forward from the back and overlap whidch the 4-5-1 system doesnt allow them to do. Anyway what do I know I am only a nugget who cares passionately about the club.

Nothing like telling Burnley how we are going to play 48 hours before we arrive there !

  23. Leather balls hurt said:

If we are going into the playoffs (fat chance) we have to win games. The fact that MM is seriously thinking of going for draws with a 5-5-1 formation shows an amazing ability to disregard reality. On a 4-5-2 formation can do if we are to take seriously his claim of wanting to win!

Play Keogh and Sylvan up front and let them have a couple of games together, then pass judgement.

Of course, Freddie Eastwood should be in there, but I have given up on the hope of MM ever having the sense to forget whatever it was that started the spate and think of the fans first!

What is going to be intereting shortly is to see the stampede of players wanting to leave Molineux. OK, we pay well for a Championship team, but the mental torture of working for egotist like McCarthy, who just makes it up as he goes along, must have made some want to find a better club for next season.

OK, there are many that I won’t be sad to see go, but if our best ones want away, then we are right back where we started.

  25. wolveswolves said:

“A dead man walking” says it all. If McCarthy is kept on, then its just for commercial reasons. There is no way he can hold down the job based on his performance.

The key question is whether Steve Morganwill take this once-only oppurtunity to have a thorough spring-clean, or wheteher he accepts Moxey’s advice to retain the status-quo!

Without a thorough spring-clean we will continue to be a dysfunctional club, no ambition or goals, no plan and rely on Moxey’s spinning to keep paying customers coming to watch this near 1st Division football.

•pick SEB upfront with AK on the bench or just play 6 in middle of the park.

Keogh made the mistake of scoring 4 goals in 5 games in January. That is no way to keep your place in this team sonny! Also MM said that in Ebanks Blake and Keogh he had found his best striking partnership. Within a week he went out and got Kevin Kyle and the ‘best’ partnership haven’t played up front together since. Keogh was first moved out to the right wing then dropped.
Actually I think MM was right in saying Ebanks Blake and Keogh are the best striking partnership and only Eastwood is worth considering from the other strikers. The problem is that MM says these things then does something different. If he listened to his own advice, as well as some of the nuggets, then he might be a manager worth keeping.

Mick has brought this all on himself. Wolves fans have been tolerant & supportive of pretty well all previous managers & their teams, and will be again after Mick finally moves on.

Paul Ince would be given a very fair ‘honeymoon’ because of his passion for the Wolves as a player, his successful start to his managerial career, and more than anything…HE ISN’T MICK!
It was clear to see Ince was a great leader & motivator on the pitch, with great tactical awareness…which is why he was captain of England. We only saw him at the end of his playing career, but he still made a huge difference. Its true he’s managing a lower level club…but what more could he do than take an obscure club straight to the top. Would the step up really be too much…the mouth watering challenge trying not to lose to Hull & Colchester.

    Mick out. Ince in!
