Skipper Gary Breen today reflected on another wasted opportunity in Wolves’ stuttering promotion push and admitted: “We let everyone down”.
Wolves crashed to a 2-1 defeat at Preston last night to leave the pre-season promotion favourites languishing in 11th place in Championship – a desperate scenario that influential skipper Breen admits is not good enough.
The Molineux captain today led the apologies to Wolves’ travelling fans, admitting that watching his side is a gruelling experience at the moment and promising more “straight talking” before they return to action on Saturday.
But despite the intense disappointment of another defeat, the skipper insists they can still make the play-offs.
“I think we’ve let ourselves down, and then our managers and supporters who keep coming and travelling to watch us,” Breen admitted.
“I said earlier in the season because we’re a generally young and inexperienced team that there were going to be ups and downs.
“But we’d have hoped at this stage of the season that those lessons would have been learned.
“There’s a lot of straight-talking to be done and work on the training ground which we’ll do and then dust ourselves down and go again.”
Breen believes mental toughness could be the key to rescuing the campaign.
“We can still make the play-offs, no doubt about it. We can do it, no doubt about it, that’s the mindset,” he added.
“If we start saying let’s hope we make the play-offs that’s not the right attitude or good enough to be playing for a club like Wolves.
“All the ability in the world is fantastic but you’ve got to have that mental strength and desire.”
A sizeable away following travelled to Preston to witness Wolves’ latest defeat – and Breen led the tributes to the ever-patient fans.
“It’s really disappointing and I feel for the supporters who’ve come here in their numbers and were fantastic.
“I know I keep saying it but it needs saying because we’re not great to watch at the moment yet they still come to watch us.
“We’re eternally grateful to them for that and just desperate to get some points on the board for them.”

This is Mick’s team. They are his players. This is March and I’m sure he still doesn’t know what his best team is. Too many of his players (e.g. Potter, Henry, Elliott, Gibson and Ward) are not good enough to take us where we want to be. It’s not their fault, they are working hard.
This season, entertainment value has been nil, we have a midfield with no creativity, there’s been over-reliance on certain favourite players, tactics have been too negative resulting in a woeful goals tally and the problem with lack of pace in defence has still not been resolved.
With heavy heart I say the board must act now. This will give the new man time to assess what he’s got and hit the ground running next season. Wait until the summer and you can write next season off too. I remember being horrified as the Hoddle reign was allowed to drift on even when all hope of the play offs was lost. Mick was left with a couple of weeks to scratch a team together.
On the positive side, there is a nucleus of a very good Championship team here. SEB, Kightly, Jarvis, Foley, Hennessey, Edwards, Keogh, Freddy, Murray, Olofinjana (the one we had last season). Plus all the promising youngsters like Davies, Gleeson, Gobern, Little and Jones - if they can stay fit and be given a chance.
We need a manager who can add more quality to that list, bring it all together, make the right team selections and adopt a more positive approach to matches. Let’s back ourselves to score more than the opposition. That policy isn’t serving the stripy team down the road too badly.
Well said Gary. But you or someone must lead the team on the pitch. The team is crying out for leadership and fight and a never say die attitide.
There are too many players not taking responsibility at the moment.
Yawn Yawn Yawn. When is this going to improve!!!
Once more the damage limitation policies are activated. A respected player comes out and says sorry to the fans and another will appear later in the week saying that the next game will ‘kick start’ our season. Mick will quote a target - say 6 out of 9 etc etc etc.
Lets forget about kick - starting this season lets just use this season to blood our kids, identify the best way of playing with our players, experiment and move forward. We have never been good enough but we can be. Bristol and Stoke show what can be done without money but we need to be planning for next season now.
Agree completely with 1.
Last Summer we thought that with new money from Morgan and a few good buys to add to last year’s squad that that did so well that we would really push on.
That hasn’t happened and there have simply been too many wierd / bad decisions from MM. The absence of creativity in midfield has been the real killer for me - we just cannot control a game or create chances.
Whats new Breeny, At least you will be still picking up your bag of cash
Instead of admitting they were poor, Why not do an “Albion” & pay, out your OWN wages for a fleet of coaches to take us to an away game?
The facts are these….
We need 75 points to be sure of play-offs. We have 51 so we want 24 points from the remaining ten games.
Our last ten games saw us achieve 14 points. The ten before that we notched up 7 points.
We have never managed 24 points in a ten match sequence.
We still have to play Charlton, Bristol and Ipswich not to mention some relagation ‘dog - fighters’ who are capable of taking points off us.
LETS FORGET ABOUT THIS YEAR. Lets plan and practice for next. Give all the kids a chance. Give Freddy and Blake a run. We will not be relegated and the fans will be on the teams side if they can see that Mick is really doing something for next year. If we go out without any positives then maybe Mick should consider a change of club.
well YOUNG gary, delighted for you but your still half of the prob to old to slow and again ur trying to win sympathy votes.i dont no y ppl say fair play gary cos hes the problem hes to slow for any level.we let the fans down??? how many times have we heard you say dat to many ur useless mate.hes right in one aspect the fans still go to games even if we do complain and moan we still go to matches to watch the likes of that.it really annoys me with breen and mick the both of them OUT
Well said 1. Cannot agree more. I hav stopped going to away games whilst MM in charge. We have no creativity and even the few quality players like Foley and Jarvis have lost confidence. Sack him yesterday so we get back to a proper Wolves team not a Mick’s Has been’s eleven
1. Well put mate couldn’t agree more, I’ve tried to stick by MM but I think the season ended last night and I’m finding it difficult to maintain loyalty to him when the quality of play has been so consistently poor this season, I’d forgive alot if the games were entertaining like last season…. I can’t remember a good game at the Mol this year? The only good reason I can think for retaining his services now is continuity.
Doubt if Mick is in charge of his destiny as far as considering a change of club. Feel that he may have nthat option taken away from him as soon as this debacle of a season is over.
He will never pick Eastwood - that is fairly clear and then has the affront today to say that our
lack of goals has been a problem.
Mick’s problems this season have mostly been self-inflicted, with the exception of injuries to key
players. His apparent inability to select, motivate and keep a well balanced team playing to their
potential and in their correct positions has been his downfall all season.
All our problems are likely to come to a head when we play WBA at home in April. By that stage we will
be no longer a contender for a play-off position and the Baggies may be in one Wembley final, with a
distinct possibility of automatic promotion. If they were to win in a canter at Molineux the position
of Mick McCarthy would be untenable in most fan’s eyes.
Good post E11Wolf, We should give some of the reserves and bench-warmers a-go. Lets see whether they can add some passion to this half soaked team. As for Breen banging on about play-offs, what player is ever going to come out and say “play-offs aren’t ‘gona’ happen” until it’s mathematically impossible, particulaly 2 days before early-bird deadline.
GET LOST MICK! BORING BORING WANDERERS!
i was told morgan went to see liverpool last night against inter enough z
I can not believe the State of our Football Club, Manager Poor, CEO, Poor,Team,Poor, Owner, well I dont think that this guy is for real, I some times think we missed the boat with Souness, one thing for sure
with him he would have Kicked a thew Arses out of our Beloved club.
Major surgery required.
if we win our games in hand we go 6th….
It’s OK,I’ts OK just do what Mick says and don’t look at the table.It’s only a table,just statistics,it does’nt matter,does it?
Will someone change that sad old record. You lot have let us down all season long.
Agree with very little of the above but the main point is to dispute ‘75 points for the play-offs.’ That might normallyb etrue but has anyone done the maths this season. Charlton are 5th with 56 pts from 38 games…that equates to 67.78 points over the season. Therefore we might ‘only’ need 5 wins and 2 draws or 17 points from our last 10 games. In reality I think 70/71 might do it but 75…no chance, that might almost be enough for automatic! Current projection on that is ba paltry 82!
dont understand all this though, last year we had the youngsters/the new signings and they were good to watch, although prone to make mistakes they tried.
but this year players like little (played 30games and a target for Reading) and daniel jones were a joy to watch, little especially went into every tackle as if his life depended on it. but he is shipped off to play at northampton.
Jones looked like he had a decent left foot on him, and good at taking set pieces.
gleeson, big things expected of him, came on in the play-offs at the hawthorns. stockport even had an irish day for him on his last game before is loan period finished, thats how high regard they held him.
but ohhhh no mick decides to get gray, foley etc and his other favourites etc and i feel now the youngsters dont feel they can break through.
so might aswell sell em!!!!
or get rid of mick, i know which one i prefer!!!
Lets cut the rubbish talk of play offs!
We are not good enough and do not deserve to be in the play offs this year! Thats the simple fact.
Can anyone name half a dozon games that we have played really well in???? I can only think of two Cardiff in the league and Albion.
We dont have the right to be in the play offs, you have to earn it! This season so far we have been poor!
Sorry your excuses are not acceptable. We’ve been having this for the past season. Its drivel! Please do your talking on the pitch or go and watch our neighbours for inspiration (And I say that with a heavy heart).
15 - main word is IF! remember we have to play the boggies in one of them!
But if we do win these two games I will find it amusing that we have been so bad this year and still in the top 6. Shows you the poor quality of the league!
I disagree with Breen when he says we can still make the playoffs. We have just picked up 1 point against 2 relegation candidates,Southampton and Preston.I just hope we can get 2 or 3 wins to keep that relegation threat away.If the last 15 games points total were added up in the league we would be in the bottom 3. MM must go STEVE MORGAN take that MUZZLE off your mouth and please tell us what your plans are for next season.
lets just get behind the team rather than moan! bad season, end of. lets get the young lads all together the rest of this season, end this pathetic high expectation and get the lads ready for the prem push next season. i really enjoyed last seasons fans, not one real moaner in the ground. this season its horrible! i wouldnt wanna play at molineux with an atmosphere like that. im glad to see morgan not doing what all the other owners are doing, and giving MM a chance.
you are now officaly now known as a tea pot team,
always in the middle of the table, going to have a cuppa the mowbury way boing boing
We could do lots of things including winning a few games if we had some ball winners and goal scorers a bit of zip and an the attitude that ‘failure isn’t an option’, but since we don’t have all those things we will be in the chamionship again next season. PROVE ME WRONG??
Just renewed my season ticket ! habbit I guess - I must admit I have really struggled this season with what has been happening at Molineux and some of the decisions, signings, tactics, performances, selections and more than these the utter drivel from MM. I am so pleased we were OK.
I remember watching the Wolves slide all the way down to the old 4th division - but even in those days there did seem to be some hope and even some passion on the pitch. The only hope now seems to be Steve Morgan. Over to you sir !
24 - Mad Mick`s had his chance and has blown it!!
were not gonna get in the play-offs cos we cant string a run of wins together so its damage limitation time . let Mad Mick go and lets plan for next year.
Also if this is true about Morgan going to watch Liverpool last night doesn`t that say something to you about his allegencies? can`t be bothered about the club he owns!! if this it not true about him i take it all back
I really feel bad for all of you, cough cough
Did Breen & MM have another punch up after the game? I heard Breen is better at defending MM puches than he is at defending set pieces.
The Problem we have is that it’s all fine & dandy having our say on here, but do you really believe anyone at the club reads these sites???????? I think not, so what we really need to do to have our opinion heard and and maybe something done is, make it a vocal demonstration at the next home game. If we Let Mr Morgan Know exactly what we think of Messrs Moxey & McCarthy, maybe just maybe we will see the back of these guys and a new dawn for our beloved club that at this moment in time is a laughing stock among West Midland’s Football.
Our Once famous club is no more, it is going to the dogs with each passing day……… a bit like the country we live in. That to me is a real shame………
A Question for Mr Morgan, Would you stand by and do nothing if this was Liverpool FC that you had just bought?
Do you remember when our former sposor’s name DORITOS meant Division One Rubbish In Tatty Orange Shirts? Now we are CHampionship Also-rans Under Crappy Eire Reject, or CHAUCER for short!
Sometimes it is right to vent disatisfaction with the way “our club” and “our team” are being run. That time has come. The targets should not be the players, it is the Manager and the Chief Executive who should be in doubt of the fans feelings come our next home game. This season has seen us go so far backwards it is a disgrace, and somebody must be held accountable.
Boring. I want my money back. What a team full of Idiots.
Morgan … do your job and act like a chairman! I havent seen or heard you since you’ve been here! As a leading buisness man you shoould know the first and most important thing is networking with the faithful and those close to your investment. Not flying around sipping champagne while your teams fans suffer in appaling conditions to watch rubbish week after week.
This club is led by complete idiots and the fans are idiots (me included) for sticking with this crap for aslong as we have.
Well thats that. You’ll see our season ticket stubbs no more this season. I should really write to watchdog and ask for my money back also, because we’ve been screwed.
Although you had a reasonable following last night, what’s the point in travelling if you not going to sing! Thought we were quiet. Anyway good luck - Don’t get rid of MM, thought you played well, lots of first time passes and first to the 2nd ball challanges. If you think you’ve had a bad season take a look at us!!
you,l have me in tears if i keep reading these comments boing boing
If Breeny is that confident and I don’t doubt his mentallity then perhaps he should be given the Caretaker role until the end of season as soon as we boot the Muppet to Timbuktu “one way ticket”…I’ll pay for it
Breen moves too slowly he couldn’t trap a wet bag of cement
hes unfit not one of our players would get in tescos side
I am getting to the same point as I was at the end of the Hoddle era. I can’t even be bothered to get angry about it anymore cause there is nothing us fans can do about the situation one way or the other. The club treat you as a Number who they can squeeze money from (yes I have just renewed mt season ticket) not as Fans whose opinion should count the most.
Apathy is setting in.
13. What you expect, he’s only at wolves to make a few bob. Shocking if he did though.
Not having a pop but think you’ve over acheived again anyway!! Boing boing..
well i said earlier i won’t renew on the early bird. until mick has been removed, i will just pick and choose games that have any interest. i will however willingly pay full price if he’s gone after the early bird offer is finished, providing his replacement is right for the club.
20 years i’ve been a season ticket holder and had one chance to see premier football in all that time. we still look miles away from ever reaching the premier in the near future, and i’m sick of watching the same old teams in the same division year in year out. with the high cost of living these days football is becoming a very expensive pastime, we’re not getting value for money and i for one will reduce the amount i spend until i see an improvement. basically we pay huge amounts of money per season for a product that leaves us, angry frustrated and quite simply bored stiff. time to face reality and stop throwing money at a club that offers nothing for it’s loyalest paying customers.
Comments regarding MM now seem correct.I like him i like his attitude however it appears that he has lost the plot somewhat. Comments regading Moxey unfair, he has done a decent job with the money and his dealing with other clubs on fee and loan fee has been very good.
Will at least one reporter please please ask MM what went on with Eastwood and put us all out of our misery, yes weve all heard the rumours but please give us some facts.
Gary, nice call but the reality of the situation is basically this - current Wolves squad - not good enough! Remaining promotion chances - nil! The manager - good first season, was hailed as a ‘god’ by some but was struck down by the ‘ego virus’ and became totally clueless with mind-numbing decisions, stupid media comments and a stubborn streak as wide as the M1 regarding players who were not his favourites from times gone by!
Behind the scenes all would not seem to be well either. We have an owner who appears to be only able to string about 2 sentences together about every 6 months, a CEO who gives his support for every manager when they are under pressure but then backtracks quicker than the Italians in wartime, a board whose only interest is in finding investment but caring little about the football being played, coaching staff who know little or nothing about defending or of how to teach strikers how to score goals and finally a medical team who surely must have a private room at New Cross Hospital, as so many of our players seem to spend their lives there!
All in all, a shambles bar the finances which are in apparently in good shape but what good is that if we do not have a team worth investing in?
The future depends upon Morgan but does he really care or is this just a stepping stone until a bigger club comes along for him to grab a share or 2 in?
Sorry everyone but for me, Wolves FC have problems and unless there is a total clear out come summer time, next season could be a repeat of this one and how many will spend their money to go through the anxieties all over again?
Time to get the “You’ve let us down” banner out again !
Stick with it lads atleast you will not get relagated
Changes can be made in the close season so keep the
morrall going it will help in the long term.
Trust me like we trust in Mowbray.
Boring, boring, boring. When are you bunch of losers going to deliver on your endless promises.Do you think your pathetic excuses can make up for the season when albion could well be FA cup winners and promoted to the premier league.Puts our season into perspective does`nt it.
Simple message, put up or shut up.
Will be in England this week and get to see Saturdays and Tuesdays games.
Based on the comments above I cannot say I am overly excited.
My post on E&S pre-season was that Breen/Craddock at the back is simply not good enough and ensured a mid table finish. Still hoping to be proved wrong.
Very disappointed with McCarthy, I genuinely felt he was the right man for Wolves.
Give him till the end of season and then drop the hammer.
Charlie
ATLANTA WOLVES
cwf279,
Go to The Hawthorns instead, pure attacking football.A pleasure to watch, win, lose or draw.
This has got to be one of the worst years for fotballing entertainment I have witnessed in all my years following my beloved club, last night we played better than we have done for a while and still managed to lose against a really poor side. There are too many players that are simply not good enough to be pulling on the Gold shirts, messrs Potter, Henry, Ward, Kyle, Collins, Elliot, an keogh to name a few. Potter and Henry only go sideways, Ward, Kyle, Collins and Elliot are simply useless, and most of these play every week!!.
Perhaps the time is right for a change, and give a new man time to have a look at the problems he will need to address in the summer. Paul Ince seems to be doing a good job.
Not yet seen any news on booming season ticket sales, I wonder why…
mr.morgan….get ince in asap….
clear out mick and his muppets kyle, elliott, potter, collins, bothroyd,d ward
we need a statement from mr morgan to give the fans an insite into what the buisness plan is for wolves
breen and craddock, keep them as the deserve an extra year but we need to buy in two younger quicker defenders for their positions and let them fight it out
hope we can keep the premier vultures away from kites and hennessey
good base for a team.. up front seb, keogh, eastwood( if he stays) and sign 1 new striker
midfield kites, jarvis, edwards, olifinyana(if he recaptures his old form)..need to sign a playmaker for center midfield, and another winger plus give young players a chance gleeson, davis
defence elokobi ,foley, eerm, eerm christ we need at least 3 new defenders and give the youth players a few games
goal ,hennessey(if we keep him) murray (if he stays fit)
good base of young players there for a new positive manager who wants to achieve things like mr ince(he stated he wants to be the 1st black england manager one day…there is a guy with drive)…not a manager who has been there and done it already..mccarthy,hoddle etc
MM makes some strange team selections, and is a right stubborn bugger, our young wolves must be at rock bottom, also the players who keep getting overlooked must wonder whats goin on,season is as good as over,if MM is to stay give these players a run, also play 4,4,2 home and away, everyone aged 5 upwards is taught to play 4,4,2,Out of Darkness and all that stuff.
Looking on the positive side if we win our games in hand we will be in a play off position.
Remembering the dark days of lower division football I don’t care how we get into the top flight.
Back heal, top edge, anything. It isn’t going to take many points to get promoted this season so we
must keep believing that the team can do it, even though the quality of football is awful. If we don’t
make it this year we still have hope for next year with the talented youngsters. The achilles heal is
McCarthy and his jobs for the boys attitude. I just wonder what yarn he is spinning Steve Morgan,
whatever it is, Morgan is falling for it.
It strikes me that we have all bought things we thought we wanted and then when we get them we find there’s no fun in it. Perhaps that’s what Mr Morgan has done. I hope that he’s just taking his time to assess the situation and is poised to act. If not I think we should expect a sale. He’s an astute businessman, he can be getting no pleasure watching poor football and, whilst having the power to influence things, taking no action. He is either very patient or very bored.
was wondering which player would be rolled out for the express & star…..
same old same old….
when will the season end!
Well said Breen. Away fans travel in there droves, usually after a long day at work, spend their oney on a ticket and travel, only to return disappointed. The penalty was very dubious I must say, but you cant keep making excuses
Preston had previously won at Charlton so why is he so dissapointed to lose to then 17th place Preston.
Your an average mid-table team. Wake up Breen and talk some sense mate.
I’m still backing you for the play offs. The fact is you are very well placed and games in hand too. Crazy, crazy league this year.
Hey St Albans Wolf - I live near the Big Morrissons - if you wanna drink beer and catch a game (Albion Cup final perhaps…) sometime lemme know
cheers
lee
(the other St ALbans Wolf)
If ever there was a time when the team needed to lift the fans it’s now. Characters need to emerge and establish themselves in our team.
Also, let’s be honest, when was the last time a lack of pace at the back cost us a goal? On paper, yes we’re slow, but I can’t remember a goal where one of the centrebacks has been outpaced. I think people are harping back to Breen’s performances in the play-offs last year with these comments.
Keep eastwood, blake, keough, sell the rest of the forwards, and go for billy sharp, he is good mates with keough i hear, that might help keough up his game,
I remember seeing that banner in the crowd at the end of another futile campaign a few seasons or so
that read ‘You’ve let us down again’. Nothing new here then! Same old, same old!
Who said the Italians back tracked in Wartime–Not really true but the rst of your article I will
agree with-We hear the same old excuses from GB but he must face facts his Leadership and ability
is in doubt-What happened to our Youngsters–Pailing Walsall I hear the same day has our dismal display
y at home last.Time for change-Will not be buying the Early Bird–Poor soles who do.By the way the Italians
did make afight of it but they were outclassed by equipment and good generals
Listening to Breeny and MM and others that have made similar comments, there seems to be a view that they need to apologise for poor performances. But the problem isn’t the occasional poor performance, it is that we have been poor all season.
I am sure many Wolves supporters will be thinking that next Tuesday’s home game against Scunthorpe will be the ideal chance to get back to winning ways. After all Scunthorpe have only won 4 of their last 17 league games. Problem is that Wolves have only won 4 of their last 17 too!
We cant blame breen we know he is rubbish,it is idiot mick who plays him along with the other 9.MM and JM and conners out know.
Seems to me that there is underlying sickness in this club of underachievers.
Until that is rooted out all we claim is great ground and a great training ground.
MOXEY OUT! TAKE MM WITH YOU!
The whole things a mess !
Garbage!
I’m sick to death of hearing all these soundbites. The players just keep saying the same thing over and over again. When are they going to back up worde with actions. I’ll tell you when, when we play with the same style as last year. I know we have had injuries and I know we have lost personnel but we have got the players to play the same way, albeit acknowledging that we would have to play inexperienced ones. I just can’t understand why we have given up on the way we played last year.
for sale 2 season tickets for the stan cullis for the remainder of the season!
what a load of crap
WBA/WEMBLEY.. totally agree with you my friend, and a nice gesture from our local rivals. so in return, good luck in the semi’s.
billy sharpe turned out to be no big deal in this division, can’t get a regular spot in sheffields 1st team. we need freddie playing regular with seb and andy k, who knows they could be our miller, bednar and phillips given the chance.
Obviously as Breen was probably told by MM to come up with an excuse he did so! Once Breen realises he is out of excuses he will get the academy players to come up with the next, when they run out of them, its the ball boys, when they run out of them its back to the hot dog man… this crap of excuses is going the wrong way.. needs to roll upwards..not that the hot dog man is at the lowest level, I luv ‘em..I am sure you get the point..
After tonights results MM Cannot hide
CARDIFF 1 HULL 0
SANDWELL 1 PALACE 1
BETWEEN WOLVES AND PALACE THERE ARE 5 POINT AND WE HAVE 2 GAMES IN HAND 6 POINTS TO PLAY FOR LETS GET BEHIND THE BOYS AND GET INTO THE PLAYOFFS
SOUTHBANK
SORRY CORRECT ABOVE CHARLTON NOT PALACE
Robbo wake up we have no chance of playoffs, you have to win games and score goals,
we can not beat teams who are in relegation positions, so who do you think we could beat in the Playoffs, Cardiff, Hull,Barnsley, preston,Big clubs like these will hammer us.
the club are in need of major surgery, and MM is not the Doctor to do the Job.
SJH I think may of sold to the wrong guy, However time will tell with that.
35. terrywalsallbaggie said: you,l have me in tears if i keep reading these comments boing boing
Another display of razor sharp wit from the boggies’ village idiot. Keep em coming terry, your insults are little effective and mostly patheric due to the fact you don’t make sense.
Sandwell town, staying down…again
heard it all before boring like watching the wolves, just look at the e+s vote over 57% think our season is dead
yet dopey mick keeps saying 9points in the next 3 games more like 1 point in the next 5 games, taxi for useless mick.
74. No, no…Terry DOES make sense!
You see WE are the TEAPOT, and for reasons unknown we are in the MIDDLE of the dinner TABLE, just like WE are in the MIDDLE of the league TABLE.
You see…TEAPOT…MIDDLE, TABLE …get it!!
Its comic genius!
