Defeat sums up season: Wolves boss

mikc2.jpgMick McCarthy believes defeat at Deepdale summed up Wolves’ failings this season – as he admitted his side are way off the standard he set for them.

They suffered their first defeat in four games at Preston, but it was once again frustrating stuff from Wolves who took the lead but were pegged back after conceding another contentious spot kick.

And, reflecting on another setback in his side’s bid for the play-offs, boss McCarthy believed there was not much wrong with his side’s display apart from familiar failings in front of goal which cost them dear.

“I thought the performance as a whole was OK. When we scored the goal we were on top and we should have gone on and finished it,” he said.

“But perhaps that has been the story of our season – missed chances and not scoring enough goals.

“Andy Keogh came in and scored a good goal and Sylvan has added to us, but in general and overall we’ve not had enough goals from every department.

“We’re not where I want us to be – far, far from it. I wanted to be top and ten points clear but we’re nowhere near.”

Although they lost no ground on the top six, the Championship table continues to make for miserable reading for fans, who have seen their side slip to 11th.

And, while McCarthy is acutely aware of the position they find themselves in, he is refusing to add to the pressure on his team by commenting publicly on it.

“I have said that I’m not getting wrapped up in that. We’ll go to Burnley and see if we can win that and try and keep ourselves in the hunt until the very end,” he said.

“I am fully aware of where we are in the league table. But it doesn’t help us to get wrapped up in that.”

Wolves have a fresh injury worry over Dave Edwards – who was taken off at half-time with a groin problem.

Kevin Kyle and Freddy Eastwood missed out through illness last night.

I cannot believe this season! Mick says when he came here we were favourites to get relegated, which is rubbish, but he doesn’t mention that this season we were favourites to win promotion and we are no where near. Even if we start winning and made the play-offs I’d be embarrassed for the other teams and we wouldn’t get all the way anyway. This season has been so boring its untrue,I think were lucky to be where we are, yet I’ve still renewed my season ticket!! That’s because Wolves are in my blood and Mick is making it boil. GET LOST MICK! Show some guts Steve and get rid of all the old backroom staff, put your stamp on Wolves and spend some money on talent!

As I have said on numerous occasions, the reason the guy “says” he doesn’t look at the table is to not create any more pressure than there already is - that should be plainly obvious, and who really cares, there are far more pressing issues on the pitch to be discussed rather than picking holes in every single statement that mm makes :

    1) 4-5-1 away from home when we MUST win ?!?!
    2) Elliott for Jarvis yet yet yet yet yet yet again ?!?!
    3) Eastwood - sick last night, but hello mm - you talk of wanting more goals ?!?!?
    4) Jones still not getting a look in ?!?!?!
    5) The quite frankly neglective approach to buying a half decent centre back in both pre season and during the transfer window !!!!!
    6) the blatant favourtism - for a while I didn’t believe this was happening, but Henry, Elliott, Collins etc constantly being played when they are out of form and end up taking the wrath of the fans.
    7) The signing of Kevin Kyle ?!!?!??!!?!?!?

I see Moxey is now rolling Kightly out at the next fans parliament - he’s a sly old dog is Moxey, putting out the big fans favourite, a kid in reality, he will do nothing but be positive and quell any possible remenstrations that fans have, and you cant blame th epoor guy for doing it.

Cant wait to see how he spins the early bird results…

I don’t want to make much of a comment about his appearance on TV at the weekend but I noticed something which I found bothered me. Did anyone else notice how he was sitting in his seat. This is a tall man who was slouching low in that chair, almost like he was lying on the sofa at home not on national TV. Could that have been arrogance? Any comments?

Amongst his many man-management errors this year, Mick has made the one cardinal sin that Dave Jones aslo made and that is to alienate the fans. He thinks we are ignorant of all things football, when for most of us the opposite is true. In general, Wolves fans are knowledgeable about the game and therein lies his problem. He cannot pull the wool over our eyes and to blame us for his (and the team’s) shortcomings is unforgiveable. At least with Glen Hoddle, he kept his talking all about football and didn’t blame the fans. Although Big Sam is a likeable character, born & bred in Dudley, I don’t think we’d enjoy watchin’ his stuff - bring on Incey - he would galvanise the fans and get evryone pulling the right direction.

What an utter embarassment Wolves have become and that is mainly down to McCarthy. This is probably the lowest quality championship ever and yet we find ourselves marooned in mid table with an absolutely appalling goals scored ratio. In the main the players are poor to average, the defence is aged and immobile, the midfield is non exisitent and the forwards generally inept. Young raw talent has been discarded and replaced by journeymen (O Connor, Gleeson, Davies, Little, Jones), seemingly good buys Foley, Edwards, Keogh have gone backwards presumably because of the coaching at WWFC and some players notably Eastwood but Jarvis and Bothroyd as well have beendiscarded in favour of Mccarthy’s favourites such as Elliot and Stephen Ward. The owner seems disinterested, the Chief Executive seems quite happy to run an average CCC side with reasonable attendances and the players many of whom are probably the best paid outside the premiership are very happy to apolgise to the fans but not to perform on the pitch and of course to keep collecting their wages. We capitulated to cardiff in the cup without even a whimper and we are doing the same in the league. Even when we have won the perofrmances have been largely inept and only Albion and Cardiff away stand out as matches where we actaully performed. Compare us to the likes of Albion, Cardiff and Barnsley over the weekend and you can see what is wrong with WWFC.From the top too many people picking up too much money for underperforming.
