Carbon monoxide – know the risks

yellow-flame.jpg

What is carbon monoxide? Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a colourless, odourless gas produced by carbon-containing fuels like gas, coal, oil and wood.

In households, appliances such as fires, heating boilers, paraffin heaters, gas stoves and water heaters powered by gas are all potential sources for carbon monoxide leaks, while exhaust fumes are the biggest risk in cars.

The gas produces poisonous emissions when it cannot be properly combusted, which usually occurs when combustion waste is not removed, for example, when a chimney becomes blocked with soot and the gas cannot escape properly.

Northern Gas are currently offering a FREE CO detector to expressandstar.com users - click here to get your free disc, or find out more about Northern Gas and their range of installation services.
