Albion get UEFA Cup boost

cup.jpgAlbion’s FA Cup semi-final against Portsmouth could become a UEFA Cup showdown after the FA announced they will not enter Cardiff into Europe.

Tickets for the Wembley clash with Pompey will go on sale on Thursday with Baggies fans poised to scramble for the 33,000 seats on offer.

And the match could now have a extra edge with both clubs potentially one win away from European football.

Cardiff will not enter the UEFA Cup even if they win the Cup because they are not affiliated to the English FA, so if the Bluebirds beat Barnsley in the other semi-final the winners of the Albion-Pompey clash will qualify for Europe.

FA spokesman Andrin Cooper said: “Cardiff would not be entered because they are a Welsh club affiliated to the Welsh FA, so if they won the FA Cup the runners-up would qualify for Europe.”

And Cooper insisted there is no chance of Premier League Pompey demanding the extra place for themselves if Cardiff lift the Cup.

He said: “The UEFA Cup place only goes to the Premier League only if both the winners and runners-up in the FA Cup have qualified for Europe by other means or are ineligible, as Cardiff are.

“So that could only happen if Cardiff and Portsmouth were in the final and Portsmouth also qualified for Europe through their Premier League place.”

The news means Albion could book a return to European competition after an absence of more than 20 years by beating Portsmouth.

Ticket information for the semi-final has been released by the Baggies but the FA, police and television companies are still locked in talks to decide whether the game will be on April 5 or 6.

Tickets will be priced at £55, £45, £35 and £25 for adults with concession prices yet to be announced.

They will go on sale initially to season ticket holders via the club’s new online ticketing system, then by telephone and sales.

The 33,000 allocation means the club’s combined total of 24,000 season ticket holders, members and corporate customers will only be guaranteed one ticket each.

I just hope this extended Cup run does not detract from Albion’s push for promotion.
IMO Albion have more chance of doing the Double than Wolves have of making the Play Off finals.

Actually, fair play to the wolves fans…. we are in the semi final of the FA cup and favourites for promotion yet they STILL find some way to convince thenselves that this is actually rubbish.

It takes some serious power of thought to turn 11th in the league and going backwards into a bigger positive than 4th with 2 games in hand to put us top - plus a cup semi final and a possible UEFA place.

If this hasn’t shut them up then its obvious that nothing will… next season they will be saying our european games will affect our premier league form.

I’m actually in admiration of such people - and even a little scared !!

    20. Steve S - What, even when we come on to congratulate you or to wish you all the best? Get a life mate we’re not all the same. Yes, I’m a Wolves fan and always will be, but what an advert for the Black Country if you went on to win the Cup? On top of that with Cardiff not able to qualify for Europe your tie with Pompey will decide who goes in to Europe (provided Cardiff beat Barnsley). So on the basis of what you said above you don’t want me wishing you all the best? Sad really…..

Wolves 11th? Man i thought the the first number 1 was a typo! i thought we were top!!!! oh hang on, were playing awful football with no brain…. guess 11 is better than 21!!!! good Baggies, sincerely meant, I don’t think wolves will make the Play offs I hope I’m wrong but we’re not good enough to go up if we did. you have depth strength and real quality, we have that but its raw. next season we can hope!!!!

lets forget the animosity and jealousy, the only thing we all need to remember is WBA are flying the flag for the west mids, i dont care if your wolves, villa, blues, or walsall get behind us - would you rather see the fa cup go to wales, the south coast or even south yorkshire? no its coming here stranger things have happened. boing boing all the way to wembley!!!

  32. Malvern Wolf said:

I thought Cardiff was in Europe.

  33. jonno said:

no chance, Pompey will show the baggies how a real football team plays. West Brom in UEFA cup would be the biggest embarrasment since Millwall were in it a few years back. Forget about the FA cup and start worrying about keeping your play off place. At least next year you wont have to worry about playing Stoke anymore

  34. baggyboys34 said:

walker… your name show the pace of your attack? and wolves1877 at the moment noone considers you a threat… noone fears the mighty wolves and noone and if we dont win the cup so what… semi finals aint a bad achievement unlike losing to the almighty morecambe… and letting the welsh get through into the english cup…well done dingle army

  35. baggyboys34 said:

jonno… jealous are we? wolves going nowhere albion going to wembley? we dont need the playoff place…. automatic will do just fine thank you

  36. db said:

You know…there are a few wolves fans on here who are a credit to their club. The see what the albion is achieving and applaud them.I hate the wolves but i would do the same as the bottom line is the fans deserve some success in these days when the big 4 win everything.

It is sad to see that some try and berate our achievements. It reeks of jealousy and makes you look bitter, bad sports and would be laughable if it wasnt so sad.

I suppose your season is a better achievement than ours, right?Struggling to get into the playoffs.Well done.

  37. turner said:

I think its greay that small clubs like albion barnsley and cardiff get a day out at wembley but to give albion or barnsley a place in europe is a joke. They would be representing England and would disgrace us.

  38. jonno said:

baggyboys34 and db, read my post again and dont call me a wolves fan. just think next year the mighty potters in the premier league and wolves and baggies still in the championship.

  39. BoingBoing666 said:

its the diversity of our game and the ‘land of hope’ status that English football holds that keeps its reputation alive, seeing teams like that in UEFA would only fuel our reputation, why do you think foreign players head to smaller clubs in England? Just out of pure intrigue. They know who the clubs are because they are adored regardless of status. I can even back this up as a guy from Poland who is one of my contacts at work often speaks to me about the various leagues we hold not just PL. His knowledge is completly flawless. Many more than you think would know exactly who we are.
After all you forget we are well known in the Czech Rep, Hungary and even stretched our long reaching arm to the Far East with our most recent capture…think about it all those Koreans, Japanese wearing Manu Utd, Chelsea, Madrid, Barcelona, Juve and WBA tops!!
    HaHa!!

  40. Happy_baggie said:

Jonno 38 - fair play to stoke, they are having a good season - although they are now cracking worse than a dropped wedgewood plate.

So you think the baggies will miss out on promotion… well i think we are far better placed than Stoke to go up - and once there do you really think stoke could stay there?

If you do go up - and i have a feeling you might, albeit through the playoffs, your season there would make derby look like Inter Milan.

No sour grapes - I just don’t think you have the squad to cope and will struggle to attract them in. Just my opionion.

  41. AMS said:

Oh the Jealousy from all comers
The promotion race is important but if you were in our shoes you would realise that this is the best chance we will have for some time of winning a major trophy.
    We can dream

What are you going to do when Sepp Blatter bans all the cloggers. Still on your current form at least you won’t have to worry about goung up, not all refs will rescue you like the one against Burnley.

  43. jonno said:

you have to remember that not every team can play the attractive pure football that west brom can, not that it helps when playing against Ricardo Fuller. if Stoke do go up i doubt we would be as bad as Derby but i would be suprised if we stayed up. If you are lucky you could be going to Wembley 3 times this season, but i think you wont be ready for promotion for at least another season.

albion in europe.. oh of course it’s the song contest soon, has mobray written a song then.

baggies in europe is good though, it will reassure the continentals that not all british teams are brilliant, i mean being used to playing teams like, arsenal, chelsea, liverpool, and man utd, will be a nice change for them to finally win a game courtesy of sad sad sandwell town.

  47. baggyboys34 said:

southbank barmy army… seriously what is wrong in your head? blown a casket? albion are hailed by many many fans, managers, players, even your own effin fans and you continue to spout green eyed remarks… give it up and stay in school and shut up.
If we got in europe its still 1 more qualification you have not had.
If we get promoted its 1 more than you have got
If we score 100 goals its 100 more than you have got
its all ifs and buts but fact is you are jealous
    you are an idiot
and desperate to appear funny when in fact youre nowhere near it!!
