Albion could not have picked a better draw in Premiership Portsmouth for their semi-final if history is anything to go by.
The Baggies have played Pompey four times in the Cup before – with two of their three victories seeing them go on to lift the famous old trophy in 1931 and 1968.
Record Baggies scorer W G Richardson scored the 1-0 winner to clinch a fifth round success on February 14, 1931, in front of a Hawthorns crowd of 30,891.
And in 1968 goals from Jeff Astle and Clive Clark gave Albion a 2-1 win in front of 42,642 at Fratton Park.
Albion’s other Cup win over Pompey came in 1956, when Ronnie Allen scored a penalty in a 2-1 home fourth round win in front of a huge crowd of 59,448.
Ironically, Portsmouth’s only Cup win over the Baggies was the year of their only Cup win – 1939 – when they beat hot favourites Wolves 4-1 in the final.
More recently, Pompey were the opposition when Albion completed their Great Escape on May 15, 2005, making history as the first side who were bottom of the Premier League at Christmas to survive.
In contrast, the Baggies were relieved to avoid Barnsley, who are unbeaten against them in four Cup meetings, winning three and drawing one.
Barnsley beat Albion 1-0 in the 1912 final after extra-time – the only occasion the Tykes have won it.
Barnsley also beat Albion in 1910, when their 1-0 third round success at Oakwell came on their way to the final, where they lost 2-0 to Newcastle after a replay.
l Barnsley FA Cup hero Luke Steele will be banned from facing Albion if the clubs meet in the final at Wembley.
The Tykes were hoping to persuade the Baggies to allow the on-loan keeper to play against them.
But the FA confirmed this morning that Cup rules forbid players on loan to figure in the competition against their ‘parent’ club.

this is the best draw we could have had! Psychologically (Wow!)we will know we have a good chance of losing so maybe we will not get too carried away with dreams of lifting the cup. We can then concentrate on the vital business in the league. We then go to wembley as underdgs an enjoy the day. Then Who knows?
In the last two semi finals I saw the baggies in (Ipswich and QPR) we were favorites to win them both - so hopefully being the underdog, the pressure will be on Pompy and we will prevail.
Harry is a great manager (2nd best in the country after ToMO) and his teams are hard to beat - but the blue and white diamonds can open them up with fast attacking football.
Either way - another graet day !!!!
Wheres the wolves fans?
LMAO
Can anyone confirm how it is decided in which
strip we will play in against Pompey ?
I have yet to see the Baggies at Wembley in the
home strip.
1967 QPR……all red
1968 Everton…..all white
1970 Man City…..all white
1993 Vale…..green and yellow
2007 Derby…..all black.
I still think the cup is anybodys. The baggies made history by being the only team to win league promotion and fa cup in same season once. No reason why we cant do it again!
The tumbleweeds are a blowing in the gale in and around the custard bowl.
Silence is Golden and black ! Shhhhhhh !!!
BOING - BOING, GOING TO WEMBLEY - AGAIN !
Did you see the Sky interviews of the participating clubs , chairmen , players etc were all wheeled out to talk about the draw. West Brom just forlorn reporter standing at the gates talking to a couple of supporters, no Peace or Mowbray The reason ? Its business as usual at the Hawthornes with the emphasis on Wednesdays match, nobody is getting carried away with cup euphoria except a few thousand supporters that is
Talk about focussed, very impressive
Crying at wembley, we will see you crying at wembley/.
Play up pompey.
Wolves for the prem baggies for Championship
8… you idiot if they lose it will be kids crying is that what you get off on upset kids you utter utter idiot
From a Wolves fan, good luck in the semi final. It’s definitely the best attacking team in the Championship against one of the best defensive units in the Prem. I do think Pompey will win though and it’s nothing to do with ability. Did you see how lucky they were at Old Trafford? Sometimes you can just see a teams name is on the cup and I reckon that might be the case here.
Personally, I’ll only be (seriously) jealous if you get to the final. I don’t agree with the semi being at Wembley even if it does give some teams the chance to play there who probably otherwise wouldn’t. For me, there is something about playing the semi final at a neutral ground that makes the FA Cup that bit different (even if it was only Villa park when Wolves got there in 98′)
on our day we can compete with anyone so theres nothing to fear for us against pompey, yes they are a great team but theve already been given the run a round a couple of times in this years fa cup, maybe this time they wont be so lucky,,we will do a job on them at wembley in and out like the s.a.s this is our year youll see,PROUD TO BE A BAGGIE,,,,,,,DOING THE DOUBLE THE MOWBRAY WAY,,,IN STYLE OF COURSE,,,OH YES
congrats for yesterday.. i see it like this, beat pompey cup is yours!!!!
simple as!!
on the big pitch cant see that suiting barnsley or cardiff. because they stay compact.
dont get me wrong i would love you to LOSE at wembley, local rivalry an all, but got to give it to you.
we boo and hate each other in a footballing sense but taking my old gold and black tinted glasses off, you are deadly going forward and id go as far to say a joy to watch, you play football the right way and for that mowbray must be saluted.
we werent as lethal as you guys last season, but win or lose it was a joy to watch (reason we applauded the players after getting thumped 6-0 by the saints) but this year with the money AGAIN we have gone backwards. anyway its your page lol like i said dont want you to win, couldnt bear going to work, but well done all the same!!!
4)
BLUE and WHITE in 1931…
shatpankwolves…king tom…you are a credit to the wolves.Shame there arent more like you guys.
Well done lads.
i remember saying on these pages b4 Charlton in 3rd rnd that the cup didn’t matter the league was the priority. That still applies, didn’t forsee us getting this far back then! The cup run has been enjoyable mostly because the majority of albion fans only see it as a bonus, whatever happens in the semi, we can be very proud of them and savour wembley without the pressure of the play-off final.
There will be NO PRESSURE, NO EXPECTATION and if the result does go against us (whilst being disappointing) NO SHAME in bowing out!
Have a beer or several and enjoy the day folks!!
Got 7/2 on you lot to bring the cup back to the Black Country. Easy money the way you’re playing
Don’t let me down or my house will be up for repo..
I think the lush green of Wembley will be more suited to the sliky football currently on show, fortnightly @ The Hawthorns!
Get your passports sorted, your going to Europe in the shape of the UEFA Cup!
Pity we didn’t pull our finger out against Cardiff last round, what a final that would have been.
Anyway, good luck in the semi’s, hope you go all the way.
Tears of JOY !
Good to know you’ll be watching a football match though !
That should be novel for a Wolf fan !
Pompey have been a lucky team for us over the years. Other than the cup omens and the great escape, there was also 1994 when we avoided relegation from what is now the Championship with a 1-0 win at fratton park. If I remember correctly, Blues won 4-0 the same day but still went down because of our win. Anyone of the 10,000 baggies that turned up that day will remember what a great day it turned out to be!
And I suppose he was there to see that in 1931, like he said!
Well done Baggies, for the Black country bring the cup to the area, I said that with tongue in cheek!
I think if you play you’re game evidently you are a very decent side, and Pompey this year have showed that they dont like playing against the passing sides in the prem i.e. Arsenal, Blackburn to an exstent!
Anyway good luck!
we will see you crying at Wembley again -good luck though at least you’ve got a team capable of getting there and putting on a performance God knows what it would be like if MM was preparing a team for the semi final. All the best
Sorry handbaggies but you’ve beaten no one yet. You’re now going to have to play a half-decent side and your ‘defense’ will leave the pitch with its pants down.
This is H.R’s final season managing. His consortium is about to take over Bournemouth and his team will make damned sure he leaves for pastures new with a trophy.
As a Wolves supporter living near Pompey I hope the Baggies win it. I think you have got the sttrongest squad and going forward you are superb, caught at the back at times but it does not matter when you can score from all over the pitch. Good luck in the cup and for promotion. I think we might see you there once Paul Ince becomes the manager
4 as the Albion were drawn first we are the home team therfore we should play in the famous Blue and White stripes
oh yes oh yes wembley bring it on a scared of no 1 n i wonder how many custards will be watchin a proper team in blue n white stripes bring it on mite as well book 2 tickets save on postage boing boing
Don’t see any reason that you can’t turn them over! I think you have a forward line that they would be quite fearful of!
I say this through gritted teeth but all the very best to you at Wembley, enjoy your day whatever happens!
4, should be blue & white we were drawn 1st ie home team.
4. Blue and White in 1954 as well, the greatest football season in Black Country history, (Wolves league winners, Baggies cup winners).
People think that Pompy’s name is on the cup cos of all the luck they had against Man Utd - but i think all that luck was to put OUR name on it.
If Man U Had been given that penalty then I don’t think we would have much chance of winning our semi against them - but luck was on OUR side when Pompy went through.
All competition we have missed the big boys - I think it could just be our fate to win it this time !!
Well done you Baggies, you have taken advantage of four good draws and made it all the way to the semis. Great that the Mancs etc are not there and the fact that four little teams are in the semis is good for football and good for the cup. Brian Robson didn’t do you any favours however because you might have beaten either of the two other teams. If we can improve a bit we might still meet in the playoffs again, this time in the final. See you in April.
Good luck to you Baggie boys see you in the prem
The only reason the semi finals are at Wembley is because the FA want to make more money to pay for the new stadium!!
The first time we won the cup was in 1888 .The last time 80 years later in 1968. 40 years on 2008. 8 seems to be a lucky number lets hope so.
Crying at wembley???? how many times have you dingles been to wembley then? (no offence intended to the true wolves fans who know good football when they see it)
i would rather reach a semi final and lose than lose to cardiff and morecambe!!!
Baggy 34, let me remember, 1939,1949,1960,1974,1980 and twice in 1988. That makes 7, how many times have you been?
Baggies 3 Pirattes 1
LMAO at dingles, they are so upset with our glory, they can’t take the fact that we are light years ahead of them! Boing boing, going up in style!
just thought id say good on the genuine wolves fans for there support and well wishes, great to see the banter is still there;well done to the lads very profesional job awesome football being played, have turned a few kiwis into baggie boys so we will be supporting the lads down under, boing boing
well done boggies nothing more to say,ok you played excellent 5 goals in the fa cup quarter finals can’t be bad
but pompey will be a lot harder, maybe you’ll only beat them with 4 goals lol, good luck .
to the so called wolves supporters who have posted on this thread, just how sad are you!!!
What’s the betting that (41) is one of those “Super Mick” one week “McCarthy Out” the next. Can spot your sort a mile off!
You are an embarassment to our great club! Rivalry is fine, the banter is great but a true fan and a proper supporter will always acknowledge the achievemnts of a rival!
Plenty of good honest Wolves fans on here, if you ain’t interested in the Baggies why have you come on their thread?…..how sad are you my friend!
nice to see all the support the wolves fans are giving us, at the end of the day it can only be good for midlands football, and id like to think we would give them support if it was the otherway round, albion cup winners and championship champions and wolves play off winners!
boing boing,
Must say how delighted I am that Harry Redknapp might finally be getting some silverware. One of football’s characters and I am sure everyone wishes him every success. It would devalue the competition too if no premier league team was in the final wouldn’t it. Having said that Barnsley have beaten two of the big four so who could begrudge them. For a lower league team to get there through the luck of the draw, however, takes the edge of things obviously.
44 - WHAT ??
You got knocked by a championship side so whats your excuse ?
A team needs to play well, score goals and have some LUCK to win the cup - or just get to wembley.
13 goals in three round suggest we deserve to be there - so stop crying.
44 Steve Bull Stand. Lol ahh bless. There’s no need to get all upset and spiteful there’s always next season. Perhaps you might even get knocked out by one of the Premier League teams you have such a soft spot for rather than a lowly Championship side. Win or lose it doesn’t matter, we didn’t expect to be there in all honesty, so a day out at Wembley is a nice aside to the bigger prize in our sights this year, the league. Anyway, we’ll get the chance to exact some revenge if we do lose the following season up the Hawthorns when we play Portsmouth in the league. If I were you SBS I’d go to Merryhill with the missus on the 5th or 6th, I’m sure there’ll be a few other blokes in gold and black shirts wandering round with faces like a wet weekend to keep you company.
