Albion blog: Super Kev

albionsheffwed2.jpgWe do not call him Super because he wears his pants on the outside of his trousers, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

Never has a nickname been more apt than on Tuesday night, climbing off the bench to score a 95th minute winner Super Kev further enhanced his reputation as the league’s number one hit man.

It seemed like we were never going to score with Koren, Robinson, and Morrison all missing good chances, but with time running out you would not have wanted that chance to have fallen to anybody other than Phillips.

It sets up nicely for our remaining league games, due to our Cup game this weekend by the time we play Palace on Wednesday we will have three games in hand on Stoke and Bristol City.

Playing catch up is not ideal; however, if Bristol drop points in their next two games it could act as extra motivation for our boys.

Having spent most of the season worrying over our defensive frailties we are starting to produce some solid defensive displays, Barnett alongside Albrechsten is looking strong.

A friend recently suggested we sign four Big Issue street sellers as our new defence, “because you can never get past them”, as a cure for our defensive lapses, but Mowbray seems to have sorted it himself.

We now find ourselves focusing on the other team residing in Bristol, with Rovers standing between us and a trip to Wembley and a place in the last four of the FA Cup.

With our league games mounting up the one thing we do not want is a replay, by all accounts the pitch is not looking to healthy and it may effect our passing game.

I am sure Mowbray will take this into account and play players that will adapt to the conditions, and with the league being our number one focus it gives the boys a chance to play without the pressure of gaining three points.

I am just so excited with the opportunity that lies ahead for us, I keep looking at the league table and fixtures that lie ahead and trying to judge what could happen.

I know it is useless due to the sheer unpredictable nature of the Championship but I cannot help myself.

On paper Stoke look to have the easiest run in, with both Watford and Bristol City having more difficult games left, and when they have to play each other points will inevitably be dropped.

The games will come thick and fast and now is the time to have a good run of form, and with two wins and two clean sheets, confidence should be high.

Now is the time for us the fans to come together and help push our boys over the finish line, so get your ticket, have a couple of beers, and have the throat soothers ready for the next day.

It’s going to be nervy, nail biting, and exciting, but we can do it, let’s get behind the boys and let them know we are with them every step of the way, come on you Baggie boys!

I wish MM had picked up Kevin Phillips - we damn well wouldn’t be in the position we are now if he had !! He has outscored all our so called strikers though hopefully SEB will continue to knock ‘em in.

Quick note for Happy he’s you’re around today. Haven’t been posting too much of late because of all the pointless slagging off that’s been flying around !! i just can’t be bothered getting involved in a slanging match. Would much rather choose a decent well tempered blog that get’s people thinking. Anyway have a good day mate no doubt we’ll be in touch !!

    1. That old has been my boy is the Championship player of the Year and Championships leading goal scorer
He has been there done it and got the tee shirt he knows more about positioning/goalscoring than any of these young kids but there time will come. Kightly’s time will come and he will now doubt go on to bigger and better things he is def for the future. As for Eastwood Wolves for what ever reason are hell bent on ruining his career.

4…..Well said ,cant see the point of “slagging off” all things Albion and all things Wolves . Both clubs have good points and both have bad points, but certain posters (we know who I am reffering to) are just hell bent on tit for tat childish comments

The 2 very different sides of Wolverhampton. One with an intelligent comment and one without a brain.

Not difficult to work out which is which.

Sorry Freddie who ? can’t agree. I know there will always be some banter between the fans and rarely will fans agree completely - and that’s the way it should be - thats rivalry, but why do many of the blogs end up with people just trading personal insults back and forth - which unfortunately has been very prevalant of late?
I do not want to be insulted by perfect strangers just because of what I’ve written as I would not insult a stranger just because he or she has written something I don’t like. However I don’t mind constructive criticism of what I’ve written and I admit I have taken some flak at times - but it’s been constructive. It hasn’t been someone calling me an ‘ignorant dingle prat’ just because it pleases someones little mind to do so.

Hiya Filton - I know what you mean - although i do tend to bite back more than you I’m afraid - however your point is proven so well by No1.

As for Freddie who - yes its rivalry and i have no problem with it. I think your comments in 1 were made tongue in cheek and I’m sure you do appreciate what the Goal machine is doing for Albion.

Its a pity you can’t have the humility to acknowledge it though.

I am so looking forward to Sunday, win and it is off to wembley, lose and it is a weekend in Blackpool!!
I can see it being an unusual game for us as they will use their boggy pitch as a leveller.
I have two hotels booked at different ends of the country!!!

  15. Filtonwolf (Bristol) said:

Bomber, your boys ought to win on Saturday but beware that Memorial Ground pitch !! I’ve been on there and it can be more like a swamp at times !! i don’t think you’ll see any pretty football.

  16. Malvern Wolf said:

Hi Bomber, as I am also a rugby fan I can tell you that pitch has been awful but it has been very dry recently and won’t I think be the problem to you that it might have been. It won’t be like the Hawthorns or the Molineux but class usually tells and I think you will be heading for Wembley, maybe after a replay.

im keeping an eye on that ebanks blake guy, a lot of people have mentioned him in the past 2 seasons…maybe your saviour?
I’d like to see Wolves come up…just as long as we finish above you ;-)

I’m sure TM aint moaning about fixtures - its what happens when you have a good season… if you want to win things you have to play the games. Thankfully we have a large squad with quality running through it in all areas. I can’t see a single player who could not be replaced due to injury - although fingers crossed that the 14/15 regulars keep fit till the end. Thats the squad TM has built for this season - and I’m sure he is already working on the next one.

There are concerns about the pitch for saturday - but unless they play on a type of surface only found on the moon I’m sure the lads will handle it. Fingers crossed, by the end of the season we could be the most hated team in bristol.

    LOVIN IT !

It doesn’t matter who we play on our run in. It could turn out to be a big advantage playing teams like Watford and Charlton. Beating the teams around us is so much better than beating teams mid table.

There is always a team that finsihes stongly and one that fades away after being near the top all season. I think that Bristol City could bottle it under pressure and i can only hope that we are the team that finishes strongly. Charlton have a made a couple of good signings with Lita and Scott Sinclair and Pardew has been in this position before, watch out for Charlton. 3 points at the Valley would be amazing.

    Hows things?

I know it must be quite a shock to read the negativity on my blog, especially having just taken 7 from the last 9 points. But the football this season has been dire and its only because the league is so abysmal that we are even within a sniff of a playoff place.

Kevin Phillips is a fantastic player and has been throughout his career. Apart from SEB and occassional glimpses from Freddy, we haven’t got anything that comes close.

Looking forward to doing some assessment on the black country derby next month, can your defence cope with super Kyle?

  21. Happy_baggie said:

Just read that Tex is out for the season - gutted.

  22. wbabomber said:

    Hi Nathan,
So much going on at the moment i havent given the derby game a second thought,
the way the seasons going it could be a crucial game for both clubs.
I have left a message on your blog regarding your situation.
    all the best.

    Guys - forget promotion for a second…

If we could choose to win just one match would you choose Wolves or Bristol Rovers ??

Bristol would take us to wembley - wolves goes towards the league……

  24. Filtonwolf (Bristol) said:

BoingBoing666 I’d take that if I wasn’t so worried that the current side (as I’ve said on a current Wolves blog)would get absolutely slaughtered if we went up. I think we have the core of a good side there but we need some very heavy spending on midfield and defence - I’m hoping SEB is going to go from strenght to strenght and that from the plethora of strikers we have that we can find one to support him.

Malvern Wolf you’re right we haven’t had too much rain of late but have you seen the weather forecast for the weekend ? I think both teams should have scuba gear available in case of emergencies !!

  25. Colley Gate Wolf said:

Any chance we could swap super Kyle for super Kev? I reckon Bristol are about to bottle it, I can’t see them anywhere other than the playoffs and I think they’ll fluff it then so think you’re safe there. As for the league I hate to say it but I think I’m going to have to crawl into a cave for a year after you tonk us and then get promoted while we implode spectacularly.

  26. Filtonwolf (Bristol) said:

Apologies if this appears twice guys !! As far as I can see my original has disappeared off in to cyberspace somewhere !!
BoingBoing666 I’d take that if I wasn’t so worried that we would get absolutely slaughtered if we were promoted (as I’ve mentioned in a Blog on the ‘other side’. I do believe we have the core of a team but we need some big spending to put some steel in to the defence and midfield. Hopefully SEB will continue to improve and that we can find someone from the plethora of other strikers we have to support him.

Malvern Wolf - true we haven’t had too much rain of late but have you seen the weather forecast for the weekend ?!! I think both teams would be wise to have scuba gear available just in case of emergency !!

Beat Wolves for me, then off to Blackpool, and three points towards promotion!!

Happy - Wolves, even if we had already won the league. Wembley is nothing compared to a derby day atmosphere, any day of the week!

I thought people might say wolves over bristol…. thankfully we can do both !!

  30. Cyril Randle said:

Hasn’t any one commented that Stoke have just lost two matches…2-NIL and 3-NIL ? That NIL bit would have us panicking more than the five let in. If any team blows up I hope it’s Stoke, purely for the dreadful gamesmanship, (CHEATING) and time-wasting they did at our place. I find that stuff unforgiveable. Bristol? Well why should they blow up? They expected nothing when they came up, everything they do is a bonus so they can’t lose.

  31. BoingBoing666 said:

    Filtonwolf
not bragging anyway but as you can from WBA it doesnt take great spending to build a quality squad, im sure we arent much better off than you guys…it can be achieved. i mean look at us 6/7 seasons ago, crashing out the ‘then called’ division 1.

  32. Filtonwolf (Bristol) said:

BoingBoing666 perhaps you’re right on the amount of money spent but I am talking of putting a team together that will not just survive in the Premiere. I think probably more important is buying the right players (in the right positions !!)

I love this site but sometimes it can be so dispiriting on the days the ‘you’re crap’ merchants take over. There are many Wolves fans like yourself that are worth reading, Malvern often takes the p–s but in a humourous way. All I’m saying is you know who you are, Southern, 2468, Gloucester etc, keep posting, don’t allow the lunatics to take over the asylum.
