Pub to be turned into nursing home

woodhayes2.jpgA former Wednesfield pub will be bulldozed and transformed into a 69-bed nursing home under new plans revealed today by the Express & Star that will create dozens of jobs for people in the area.

The owner of the Wood Hayes pub and adjoining Old China Restaurant made the announcement after the newspaper told yesterday how residents were calling for it to be pulled down.

Fallings Park councillor Steve Evans said today: “We met the owner last night and he revealed he was in the process of submitting a planning application to turn the former pub restaurant into a nursing home.

“Most of the private nursing homes are in the south west of the city so this development would be most welcome,” he added.

The site, in Wood End Road, has been empty for around two years, sparking complaints from residents.

The pub closed in 2005 following complaints about late night noise and nuisance which led to licensing restrictions being imposed by the city council.

Fellow Fallings Park councillor Val Evans said: “In principal this seems an excellent proposal. We will be consulting local residents for their views once the application is submitted.

“Given previous complaints about late night noise and nuisance, a nursing home with dozens of new jobs would be very welcome for our community,” added the councillor.
