Tony Mowbray has challenged Albion striker Craig Beattie to help the Baggies reach the Premier League by becoming a loan star for Preston.
The Scottish international joined North End late yesterday afternoon and made his debut in the 1-0 win at Leicester last night, although his evening was cut short by injury.
And Mowbray has called on Beattie to aid Albion’s cause by helping Preston upset the other promotion chasers. North End face Charlton on Saturday and meet Ipswich and Bristol City in the final two weeks of the season.
“Out of respect for Craig I let him go to play football,” said Mowbray.
“I feel a responsibility for him to enjoy his football.
“He wasn’t even going to be on the bench for us at Sheffield Wednesday and if he can go to a club like Preston he can potentially help our cause against our rivals and get himself fit and hungry.
“Then, if we need him because someone gets injured, we’ll bring him back and get on with it.”
Beattie has joined Preston on loan until the end of the season, but Albion will have a 24-hour recall clause after the initial 28 days of the loan.
Decision-time is approaching over Sherjill MacDonald, whose loan at Hereford is due to expire after this weekend.
The Baggies have had loan enquiries from Championship and League One clubs.
