Boss Mick McCarthy is set to hand Kevin Kyle a major role in tonight’s crucial Molineux clash with Southampton after furiously rounding on the striker’s internet critics.
With McCarthy set to revert to a 4-4-2 formation for the visit of Southampton, it is Kyle who is leading the race to partner Sylvan Ebanks-Blake after the big Scot impressed in two recent substitute appearances, which included a goal.
It is a remarkable turnaround for Kyle, whom McCarthy thinks joined Wolves battling against “negative equity” after internet agitators questioned his signing.
McCarthy insists he pays no attention to cyber critics, but he’s delighted to have seen them proven wrong on Kyle so far.
“I’ll tell you why there were a few murmurings about Kevin Kyle when he came in,” McCarthy said.
“Because of all the nuggets who go on messageboards and read what Coventry fans have said about him and pass on information.
“He came here almost with negative equity and has to start with a minus – it’s unbelievable and I find it incredible.
“It’s great on Saturday that they’re shouting his name, but two games ago at Cardiff he’s getting it in his earhole.
“I just think ‘give him a chance to get going and he will have an impact for us’.
“I find the criticism of him difficult to take. I know it happens, all Coventry websites and people posting things up.
“I’ve never seen one, and have no intention of looking at one, but I get told.
“It just frustrates me that he seemed to come here with a bit of baggage and with people suspicious of him.”
McCarthy signed the striker just before the January transfer deadline to give him the option of a tall, bustling player capable of frightening opposition defences.
The Wolves boss revealed he also considered signing Coventry’s other big target man Dele Adebola, who joined Bristol City, before opting for Kyle.
“I looked at Dele, we considered him.
“It’s all about the impact they can have, it’s not always that one individual’s ability.”

Dear Mick - the negativity has nothing at all to do with Coventry City websites. It all comes from the fact that ever since you have been manager at the club we have struggled to score goals. In Kevin Kyle we have brought in a striker that has scored 18 goals in an 8 year career. The fact that he is still earning a living as a striker with that factual record is quite incredible.

I was part of that negativity when Kyle arrived, and probably for good reason. His return of around 2 or 3 goals per season is never really going to have a big impact is it?
Mick is still treading a fine line with the fan’s confidence and by playing Kyle up front from the start, he is taking another big gamble.

Nathan - Keogh doesn’t have a much better scoring record than Kyle but certainly has a big impact on our play when he is on top form. Kyle is there to win headers and hold the ball up, and against Stoke at home he did that very effectively, and also scored away at Palace with a belter.
Personally I think Mick is right. Wolves message boards are full of unnecessarily negative comments from people with nothing better to do. If the boards are to be believed, about 90% of fans want Mick out, but I’ve yet to see this reflected at matches where there’s been hardly any anti-Mick chanting.

I really don’t know how much clearer i can make this point, but for all the people out there without a football brain i’ll try again. Kyle is a target man - We have NO other target men in the squad. If as Nathan says he gets us two to three goals and they turn draws into wins then thats a BIG impact! Remember this fella is on loan, if he makes that sort of impact great, if not then what have we lost? I know we have to pay his wages but it’s not really that much of a gamble, when put into the context of the wage bill as a whole. He will also hold up the ball and bring other people into the game. Although we may be inclined to play a more direct style with Kyle in the squad, we have to remember that we are playing in the championship. Would we complain if it got us in the play-offs?

In many instances it is the very very poor fare that has been on offer this season that has made some of them so frustrated that they vent their feelings through the noticeboard rather than at the matches . Each of the people who write in , including our excellent Blogger Nathan , have valid points to make about the teams performance , the style of play adopted , your strange team selections and your overwhelming loyalty to players from your previous occupation . Before you insult the literate efforts of genuine fans who feel they need to make a valid point I suggest you need to understand that WE ARE WOLVES not a team of ex sunderland cast offs who you took to such dizzy heights of the worst premier team ever seen .
