Colchester 0 Wolves 1

wolvesbadge.jpg

16.55: Full time and another away win for Wolves brings them closer to the play offs.

16.48: Three minutes to go at Layer Road and no sign of a Colchester comeback.

16.44: Edwards shoots over from distance and Wolves look relatively comfortable.

16.38: Double change for Wolves. Kyle is on for Ebanks-Blake and Gibson for Gray. 13 minutes remaining at Layer Road.

16.31: Colchester make a double change and just seconds later Ebanks Blake send an overhead kick over the bar.

16.27: Wolves almost extend their lead but Elokobi sees his shot cleared off the line. He nearly came back to haunt his old club there.

16.21: Still nothing to choose between the teams. It’s a poor game if truth be told but at the moment Wolves just need points.

16.18: Douglas: “The second half had failed to settle into any kind of rhythm.”

16.13: Ebanks-Blake looks offside but there is no flag and he cuts inside, only to be crowded out.

16.12: Colchester force the first corner of the half and then Jackson brings another save out of Hennessey.

16.07: Underway again and no changes for either side.

15.58: A rare stat surely. All five West Midlands teams are 1-0 up at half time.

15.45: Hennessey rescues Wolves again as Lisbie goes clean through. He looked certain to score but the young keeper pulled off an excellent save.

15.41: It bodes well if Wolves can hold on until the break with the wind in their favour for the second half.

15.39: Jody Craddock goes off injured and he is replaced by Kevin Foley.

15.33: The visitors are a touch fortunate to be in front but Wolves fans won’t care about that.

15.30: Wolves take the lead against the run of play through Ebanks Blake, and it’s an incisive finish. Excellent build-up play from Elliott, he wins the ball back and sends a high pass to SEB, who sweeps past the keeper.

15.28: More last gasp defending for Wolves - and the home side are piling on the pressure in tough conditions.

15.22: McLeod’s pace is troubling Wolves and he is inches away from a cross. Douglas says: “Wolves are up against it”.

15.17: Good work from Elokobi forces Wolves’ second corner of the game but Edwards’ cross is cleared.

15.15: Worry for Wolves as Craddock goes off for lengthy treatment on an ankle knock, wincing, he comes back on.

15.12: First save of the game from Hennessey as he deals with McLeod’s shot, terrific smart stop from the volleyed effort by the young keeper.

15.09: Our man at the game Mark Douglas says Wolves are up against it in the first half because they are playing into a vicious wind.

15.07: Decent move from the home team and Clive Platt’s shot is blocked by Breen.

15.05: Quiet opening at Colchester, just one corner for Wolves which is cleared.

15.00: We are underway at Layer Road.

14.48: That team selection worked last week so why change it, you may think. The fans on here don’t agree though, they think it’s too negative.

14.42: A few pics to keep you interested before kick off. Take a look at football grounds from the air

14.34: No injury to Keogh to clear things up. He is not in the 16 again.

14.32: Danishwolf has his say on longevity (see 14.13): “Some people like Incey could help a fading stamina through better positioning.

“But overall I do think that the physical demands of todays game are so high that we will not see any players beating Stanley Matthews record ever.”

Join the debate below

14.24: Same again for Wolves. One change on the bench, Olofinjana out, Gibson in.

Wolves: Hennessey, Elokobi, Breen, Craddock, Collins, Gray, Henry, Potter, D.Edwards, Ebanks-Blake, Elliott.

Subs: Stack, Eastwood, Olofinjana, Foley, Kyle.

14.13: Sheringham said his dad wanted him to keep playing until he was 50 to beat Sir Stanley Matthews’ record. How long do you think a footballer can play until these days?

14.08: Wonder if Teddy Sheringham will play a part today?

The former England striker has announced he will retire at the end of the season, aged 42.

The same age as Bully incidentally - and Neil Grayson - who partners Liam Hughes upfront for Stafford Rangers in Bully’s first home game in charge.

14.00: An away win down south kicked new life into Wolves’ season last weekend. Can another one do the same?

Colchester are fighting hard against the drop so it will be tough at Layer Road.

Being optimistic, I quite fancy Wolves to stuff them 3 or 4-0
BTW Les Mitton, got anything nasty to say about me today?
I ’spose an apology is out of the question?

Kent Wolf: I am waiting for this stuffing…I think we are LONG overdue one really!

But, I will stand by one-nil wolves today, as I sit anxiously awaiting this team news…

Rubbish journalism yet again. CUFC have the worst home
record in terms of points gained. Fighting for their
lives but rubbish! Anything but a victory is a disgrace.

5 thats just the sort of comment that could stir them up-we don’t have a divine right to win.

regarding how long a player can play:
I think it depends on his position and style of play. Sheringham is a striker, but has never really depended on his pace. If your main ability is your pace, you will suffer if you cant change your game as you get older.
Some people like Incey could help a fading stamina through better positioning.
But overall I do think that the physical demands of todays game are so high that we will not see any players beating Stanley Matthews record ever.

No Keogh again. I shake my head in disbelief!

  10. adeyp said:

    Is Keogh injured or what?
What a negative looking side to go to bottom of the league with, mind you the way we are playing a 0-0 result might be ok, it could be the point that saves us from relegation at the end of the season. Mcarthy must go.

  11. OsboWolf said:

Anyone know whats going on with Keogh? He’s our top scorer and hit a purple patch, now he’s dropped! Harsh.

  12. Eddie Wolf said:

We may get three points but how negative??

Bottom oof the league and we set out to stifle them. Hmmm…it might back-fire!

And Gibson in? Oh yes great player (sarcastically)

No just go ahead and apologise to me I might not accept it though~

What’s happend to Keogh and Bothroyd?! See that’s the problem when you’ve got 7 strikers. I thought Bothroyd should have been sold in January and I still think he should have been. You can’t keep everyone happy with such a large squad.

  16. DudzieWolf said:

Hadn’t Keogh just started scoring a few? Oh yeah so did Freddie, difference Freddie can keep the bench warm better than Keogh

2nd from bottom and we there to try and nick it on the break, if lightning does strike twice then I hope it knocks the living daylights out the Muppet. Or some sense, cannot wait for end of season this is so depressing if I had any hair I would have pulled it all out by now. Still I hope we win as always but can’t see it

  17. Filthy Raider said:

Regarding how long Sherringham has been around - he was the SoS for England with Shearer. Interesting that when they discussed him on Football Focus it was his commitment etc that they said kept him going. Nothing to do with all the young birds, then?

  18. rolowolf said:

    12. Gibson hasn’t had a proper chance in this team in his favoured centre midfield position. I thought he was the one shining light when he played in the centre in the Cambridge game earlier this season, albeit against a poor side. He was player who shows signs of wanting the ball and making things tick in the middle. He’s rated very highly by Man Utd and was exception for the Irish Republic when I saw him some months ago. Don’t write him off for no good reason.

elokobi hatrick! rub it in son!

I think the Keogh and Bothroyd omissions are probably direct punishments for both of them being sloppy in giving the ball away that caused the goals against Cardiff

Johnwolf… I am talking to Wolves fans. The E and S
always builds up the opposition as something to be feared.
I spoke the truth but not what I would put in the press
a day or so before a match. As you say it could wind them
up unnecessarily. The position of the E and S is
that all away matches are tough. They are not or rather
should not be. Just stop building up poor opposition!
    So pleased we’re winning!

  42. Trust Mick said:

    36. Come on Wolves. Back in the play offs after Tuesday nights win !

  43. trevb21 said:

Not a pretty game but there are times we have to grind out the results.
If all our games end in a 1-0 win I will be happy but have no nerves left.
I just wish we could finish teams off earlier in the game instead of riding our luck.

  44. Kent Wolf said:

we’ll take the three points, sounds like ANOTHER crap game!

  45. savagewolf said:

keogh is a donkey, good job he didnt play,no upper body strength, weak shot and a sorry excuse for a forward

  46. Mark Perry said:

yes another win hopefully can string sum good wins together now
    shame bout stafford n bully

  47. DudzieWolf said:

Even if we beat Soton on Tues we need Colchester to beat Plymouth for us to get back into the play-offs

So this means we have won 2 on the bounce but the play-offs still look a mile away, you need to take a look at our run in

Last six games Charlton A Cardiff H Bristol City (Leaders) A Ipswich H Coventry A and Plymouth H. You might wanna include Tesco’s at home in there somewhere as this game has yet to be re-arranged

This will be tough and has all the hallmarks of the usual build up then peter out symptons, hope I’m wrong but as it stands we are still 10th level with Hull and 2 behind Ipswich & Plymouth who are 6th & 7th respectively

  48. Pelsall Wolf said:

Well done Mick. I said last week that you wouldn’t play the same team again this, but you proved me wrong. Here’s an idea - play the same team again on Tuesday. Don’t change the team unless they start losing again. Liverpool used to win the old first division using about 14 players in the whole season. They played together as a team, not a collection of individuals who were put together every Saturday, which is what we’ve had to put up with for most of the season.

  49. DudzieWolf said:

savagewolf - no wonder you chosse that nickname, Keogh is still a damn site better than Kyle, Elliott, S Ward and Bothroyd. So what does this make them then?

  50. Nick Phillips said:

2 points off with a game in hand is a mile away?

  54. Eddie Wolf said:

No-one can grumble at three points at a tough and windy Layer Road. Negative tactics again, which shocked me as Colchester is a game we should arguably be using to get our goal difference up. No Keogh again, surely he deserves at least a place on the bench. Freddy-lovers will probably disagree and the fact that it was another win towards reviving our season should be be full positives. Fair play to Mick and the lads. Bring on Southampton but please Mick…a positive formation seen as we are at home.

    Up the Wolves!

It is said that eventually all teams resemble their manager,so ugly, stubborn and uncomplicated it is then.Sixth or higher is still achievable.

My prediction on the preview thread was spot on 1-0 to wolves with SEB the scorer. I have scared myself. No I actually got an insider who fixes games :) Seriously great to get 3 pts roll on tuesday!

I just wish all the negative idiots would shut up - Sandwell Town need you more than we do

  59. Butch Dingle said:

There is a distinct lack of MM jibes today, whats up with you all? Still, automatic has gone, two points of the play-offs and a game in hand it is too much to make up, well that would take a miracle now, wouldn’t it??

  60. quality counts said:

…another brilliantly won tactical game, won in superb style by MM and his Merry Men, hey wait, Colchester? worst team in the league? how many did we score (being Premiership bound!) 10 was it?… then I woke up from my nap…another nightmare to face…

However, I am sure MM wil cheer us up with his Monday! “see we can win a game!” and “cake walk up a division now!”.

The only sense of reality is that we never moved up a spot..in fact we are where we deserve to me..stagnant in all areas. Like MM’s brain during a game and during team selection.

eh dont 4get we still ave 2 games still to play on stoke who will play 36 2 wins will take us into the playoffs

It makes them worse than a drunken old greyhound with one leg tipped to win the 3.40 at doncaster dudzie wolf(49)but Bothroyd although lazy is still a far better player than keogh will ever be.Number 50 we ARE A MILE OFF promotion in terms of the quality we produce on the pitch and if you think we are going up with this squad its you who is a moron. We are a couple of points off the playoffs, big deal so is half the division

  65. McWolfingham said:

cant knock two away wins on bounce but…people still will try.

    :(

  66. DudzieWolf said:

Nick Phillips… Our goal difference is crap and check the run in, then we’ll see who the moron is shall we

2 away wins and 2 clean sheets.
cant really complain its all about winning and getting the points now.
sandwell clowns did us a favor as well.
lets keep this run going.and do a derby(but not if we go up)baffled by a lot of mm’s decisions this season but lets get behind the team.

  68. wwfctillidie said:

2 wins away from home… so what.. we play possibly the worst football in the division.

1-0 at colchester is not exactly confidence boosting and playing neill collins over foley is pure stupidity

  69. SUPERSTARDJWOLVES said:

Went to match saturday, scrappy win, but its a win. Cant knock the effort to be fair, HOWEVER there is alcak of quality in that team. Our bench mark is when we play the teams around us.

MICK OUT! “I will persist with that slogan, somehow its a omen that wolves keep on winning when I do sign it off like that”

    MICK OUT!

  70. Ad Mant said:

Superstar, you are not alone …

Please, oh please, if there is someone out there listening, can we get rid of this mad scourge before he ruins next season aswell.
