Wolves v Albion tops derby list

900albion-v-wolves-1.jpgFootball’s biggest rivalry is not in the Premiership but between Albion and Wolves, according to a new survey of fans out today.

The Black Country clubs have the most keen rivalry of any other football neighbours south of the border, followed by the ‘Old Farm’ pairing of Ipswich and Norwich, the survey of 6,000 supporters revealed.

Liverpool and Manchester United came in as the third biggest grudge match.

The ‘Football Rivalries Report 2008’, produced by The New Football Pools, owners of Littlewoods, combines an indepth survey of all 92.

League clubs in England and Wales and a statistical analysis of club records and histories, to uncover the reasons why fans harbour such bitterness and jealousy towards each other.

Baggies’ and Wolves’ fans were deemed to have the most intense rivalry in the report, with one in four fans from both clubs claiming that their rivalry went much deeper than football.

Manchester United are still the club fans love to hate – with 12 per cent of fans of English teams seeing the Old Trafford club as their main rival.

Arsenal fans felt that Manchester United were a bigger rival to them than local foes Tottenham Hotspur, while United overlooked their neighbours Manchester City, in favour of picking Liverpool as their biggest competitor.

The rivalry between Cardiff and Swansea came in at fifth while the North East fans of Newcastle and Sunderland were only ranked ninth in the list.

Jon Sheehy, marketing director for The New Football Pools, which also own Vernons and Zetters Football Pools, said: “Football is based on competitive rivalry between clubs, regions and fans.

“A surprising aspect to our report is the extent to which ‘local’ rivalries are in decline.

“It’s a sign of the modern game, with greater media coverage, when fans are overlooking their near-neighbour as rivals, in favour of a club which plays over 200 miles away.”

The survey said the top 10 biggest rivalries in our game were:

1) Albion and Wolves

2) Norwich City and Ipswich Town

3) Liverpool and Manchester United

4) Portsmouth and Southampton

5) Cardiff City and Swansea City

6) Aston Villa and Birmingham City

7) Sheff United and Sheff Wednesday

8) Bristol City and Bristol Rovers

9) Newcastle United and Sunderland

10) Brighton and Crystal Palace

    I’ve always thought that the Wolves have clung to our coat tails a bit because without Albion they wouldn’t have a genuine rival..Not too long back the rivalry between Albion & Villa was far bigger. Remember we were playing Villa in Cup Finals in the late 1880’s and really didn’t go head to head with the Wolves till the mid 50’s…Wolverhamptons closer to Wales isn’t it?….

    Just did as you said and downloaded a map of the Black Country.

    Here is the location:

    http://www.blackcountryobservatory.co.uk/maps.asp

    They list the Black country as:

    Dudley
    Sandwell
    Walsall
    Wolverhampton

    The Black Country Museum says…

    Today the Black Country is made up of most of the four Metropolitan District Council areas of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton and the collections and displays are derived from throughout these areas.

    The industries included:-

    * coal & coke
    * iron & steel
    * locks & keys
    * nails
    * chains
    * ships anchors
    * glassware
    * beer & stout

    There you have it from the horses mouth!

    I’ve always grown up with Villa being our main rivals. I’m a relatively new comer but me and all my mates have more rivalry towards the Vile scum as we have hardly played the Dingles (barring last season) in the last 5 years! And I can remember this same debate a while back, Wolverhampton didn’t join the Black country until around 1995/6? West Bromwich (not the Hawthorns) has always been in the Black Country.

  12. lloydy said:

    An Albion fan claiming rivalry with the villa, all the years i have lived in a big villa area i have never met one who looks upon the albion with anything more than we look at Walsall!!!

    To traditionalists the Black Country is the area where the coal seam comes to the surface - so West Bromwich, Oldbury, Blackheath, Cradley Heath, Old Hill, Bilston, Dudley, Tipton, Wednesfield and parts of Halesowen, Wednesbury and Walsall but not Wolverhampton, Stourbridge and Smethwick or what used to be known as Warley.

    The region was described as ‘Black by day and red by night’ by Elihu Burritt, the American Consul to Birmingham in 1862. Other authors, from Charles Dickens to William Shenstone refer to the intensity of manufacturing in the Black Country and its effect on the landscape and its people.

  18. Funkington-Smythe said:

    You are partly right abdonwolf but that’s not the whole story.

    Yes today those four areas (inc. Wolverhampton) make up the Black Country. But the emphasis is on the word ‘today’. Historically Wolverhampton was never part of the Black Country, in fact the people of Wolverhampton at the time didn’t want to be associated with it. I’m not sure of the year but it was the council which re-classified the boundries so that Wolverhampton joined the Black Country. This is
    because of the small but nevertheless present tourist industry which the Black Country enjoyed.

    So basically yes Wolverhampton is in the Black Country but historically it isn’t.

    It does not seem to matter what the article is about the subject always seems to follow the same path.
    Personally i would hate to see a world without Wolves, i feel sorry for clubs who have no real local rival, lets face it these blogs would be boring without the spit and banter of both Wolves and Albion.
    Although barracked for his point, comment number 1 does bare an element of truth to it, although the coat tail analogy was a little provocative.
    My father in law and a loyal Wolves follower clearly remembers there being little rivalry between the clubs 50 years ago. I think due to the similar paths the clubs have taken in recent years, and the amount of years spent in the same division has served to heighten the feelings towards each other (i am not saying this is a bad thing).
    Also due to the emergence of commuting into work, we now more than ever have fans living or working in other clubs areas. Many fans view their local rivals according to where they live and the amount of rival fans they know!!
    Personally i will always view Wolves as our main rivals and the first fixture i look for (if in the same division).
    Yet my mate who lives in Tamworth views Villa as his, it is all relative!!

    With regard to the Black Country location I see that Ordnance Survey are considering changing landranger sheet 139 from ‘Birmingham and Wolverhampton’ to ‘Birmingham and Black Country’ this will allow the sub-region to be clearly identified and should put an end to this disagreement on who is in it and who isn’t.

    I am a Brummie by birth - I once lived in Walsall for 8 years and I now live in staffordshire - and I couldn’t give a stuff if neither team is in the black country… In what way does this matter now ??

    As is proven above, the boundaries for areas change constantly and if global warming increases we will all be following Inverness - so GROW UP and discuss football not postcodes.

  42. Backsidus said:

    For info:

    Post codes mean nothing. They are Royal mail’s system only. For example, Bridgnorth has Wolverhampton postcodes, and its in Shropshire. Wombourne has Wolverhampton post codes, and its in Staffs.

    Secondly, both West Bromwich and Wolverhampton used to be in Staffordshire, prior to the boundaries being changed, and the formation of “The West Midlands”.

    Thirdly, historically, Wolverhampton was not considered to be in the Black Country, and didn’t want to be.

  43. The Real Bully said:

    Whatever it says on any web sites or history books, the Black Country debate is a spurious one as ther’s never been an area officially defined as such. Therefore we may both be in it or more likely neither of us are in it.
    The Albion -Villa rivalry as with Villa -Blues and Albion-Wolves depends where you’re from. As a lad in the sixties in Smethwick, Villa were the enemy, I knew loads of Villa fans but no Wolves fans. Kids nowadays probably know as many so called Man Ure fans as Albion, Villa or Wolves.
    The bigger club debate is another dubious one. How do you measure it? Perhaps Duckworth Lewis could come up with a sliding scale. According to some of the contributors here, Newcastle are bigger than Liverpool because they have bigger crowds. Does a cup win in the 1890’s rate the same as a cup win in the 1990’s. Perhaps what matters most is where you are currently in which case we’re both in the shadow of Blues and Villa, and indeed Wigan. Sad but true.

  45. John_askill said:

    42 I agree with you completly i can not wait to see west brom play wolves in the premiership and we should both hope we both go up so the rivalry could have more value say a relegation battle where we both need to win to survive that would be a great atmosphere

  46. Sandwell massive?? said:

    I enjoy the rivalry like most, but there is one thing both clubs are failing to do and that is establish themselves in the Premiership.

    Both clubs owe it to the fans to make sure we both cement a place in the best league in the world and show people just how passionate and serious we take our football in the Black Country.

    Until then, only we care.

    You have to smile at the Dingles, don’t you? They’ve kidded us for years that they’re the top Black Country Club, but these results show otherwise.
    1 point is awarded for the team who finished 92nd in the League, and 92 for the Champions (or, in 1888, 12 points, for example). Liverpool win by a long way from ManU. But more importantly, Albion are in 11th all-time spot; where are Wolves, though? - languishing in 16th spot. By my reckoning, if Wolves should happen to finish 10 positions above the Baggies for the next 24 years, only then will they be able to say they’re the biggest in the Black Country. Don’t bother researching the FA Cup, either, Dingles, because we beat you hands down in that, as well - and how many years have you had in Europe? No - sorry!!!

    No 60 re Europe I think you’ll find that Wolves actually pioneered the competitions with its floodlit matches against Honved etc. Also if you care to check the record books we also reached the UEFA Cup Final in 1972, something the Tesco Boys have failed to do. Finally if you are such a big club why are your attendances smaller than ours at the moment when you are playing such ‘great’ football and by my own admittance are better than us currently.

    I think deep down every WBA fan know Wolves are a bigger club than them, and we will always be more respected in football.
    However at this moment we can’t deny Albion are a better side than us because they are.

    Couldn’t agree more with Happy Baggie. Lets just accept that we hate each other and stop splitting hairs about post codes. Did some research before I typed this. If people are going to try to quote facts and figures, the only thing important is WINNING things, whoever remembers a runner up? So on that basis I checked my facts on the WBA official website. For this exercise Prem=Div1 etc. This what WBA have WON, one Division 1 title (1920), 2 x Div2, 2 x Div3, 5 x FA Cup, 1 League Cup. That’s a total of 11 competitions. Wolves have won 3 x Div1, 2 x Div2, 2 x Div3, 1 x Div4, 4 x FA Cup, 2 x League Cup, 1 x Sherpa Van, 1 x Texaco cup. That’s a total of 16. Now lets take out the Mickey Mouse stuff and just look at Div1 (Prem equiv), FA Cup and League Cup. Albion = 7, Wolves = 9. So as far as WINNING is concerned Wolves have the better record. On top of that when did Albion ever appear in a European Final, but lets not go there because Wolves did not WIN that one (had to lever it in though!!) Also lets look at the last time either club won a MAJOR trophy, WBA 1968, Wolves 1980. So that’s the hard facts I’m afraid and it looks like Wolves win hands down. However in the debate regarding who is the bigger club, lets look at recent attendance records, at the start of this season Albion’s home attendance did not rise above 20,000 until the end of September, since then a slight improvement, of late it’s been about 22,000. This is the so called pundits “best side in the Championship” and all that rubbish we keep hearing, and up to this last month Albion have been top of the league, top of the league and you cannot sell out, some big club that is. Lets face it the facts speak for themselves. I rest my case M’Lord.
    Regarding the re-arranged game, I was speaking to the ticket office at the Golden Palace (Oh sorry forgot to say who has the better stadium??) the other day. The lady there said there’s a problem with the police not wanting it in midweek, something about all those un-employed Black Country people from Sandwell drinking all day causing trouble in our beloved Staffordshire. Anyway they are talking about both clubs re-arranging a weekend game to accomodate this fixture.

Who outside midlands has heard of Sandwell, yet they all know where West brom is. Survey is right though, premiership blackcountry derby please.

    Message to all Wolves fans - don’t rise to the Albion fans’ attempts at winding us up. Remember, cream usually rises to the top but at the moment it’s all the mushed up biscuit from the bottom of the cup! Albion are winning the battle but we are winning the war. They have always felt inferior to us hence the constant clinging to things like season points totals and their ridiculous claims of them being a bigger club - it’s VERY sad.

    i 8 dingles… weve won more leagues more times than sandwell town, more league cups and only 1 less fa cup, not too mention sherpa vans etc, and had more european competition participation so as far as accolades go wolves win by a country mile.

    … and i thought it was called the black coutnry given the smog in the air from all the industry?!

  107. andy newman said:

    and who thought that west brum were a bigger team than wolves? Wolves’ success in Europe in the 1950s alone puts us above sandwell town. I remember going to stockholm and seeing a wolves mug alongside some liverpool and Man utd mugs in a tacky gift shop… which i think shows how many other europeans still percieve us, as a big team.

FACT. & before you accuse wolves legions of worldwide fans, sorry tescos - out of your league here as you aint got any - they cannot, like you, be accused of glory hunting!
