Wolves blog: Fluffy stuff

Mick McCarthyAfter abdonwolf nicknamed me ‘fluffy’ in my last blog, it stuck with friends and family, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

Let’s hope they drop that one quickly eh?

In my last blog I spoke about the joy of actually winning an away game, one of only four so far this season in the league.

But I also tried to balance that with the fact that most of the football this season has been joyless to watch.

Kights this week said that Mick McCarthy is a victim of his own success and that had we finished lower down the league last season, then expectations wouldn’t be so high this campaign.

There is an element of truth in that statement, but the fact is that when Mick has had money to invest in the team he has done so quite poorly in my opinion.

He had a wonderful chance to build on last season’s surprise success, but just hasn’t gone about it in the right way.

Not being able to call on the talents of Kights for the remainder of the season will be a big blow, especially for MM’s chances of holding on to his job come the end of the season.

Having watched Adam Johnson come on in the cup the other night, I think he would do a terrific job on the right wing if he were to come in on loan.

He also possesses a North-East passport, which ensures that Mick could keep up the quota in the Wolves team.

But as I said in my last blog, I don’t want to be perceived as negative, fluffy, sitting on the fence or any other footballing cliche.

I just try and speak my mind. And this season I don’t really see much value for money for my £400+ season ticket.

Anyway starting with the trip down to Essex on Saturday, March delivers games in quick succession.

And of course I and many others would still like to see Wolves reach the play-offs.

And that’s why I’m staying positive and fluffy, just until all hope has gone.

Good luck to the lads this Saturday at Layer Road.

It has been a poor season but nothing comes of sacking managers every 18 months, look at Newcastle. Give him until December next season if we are floundering in mid table then i may say time for a change.

My choice of manager would be Paul Ince, time to go for someone unproven and not an ex international manger.

Stourbridgewolf - you say “nothing comes of sacking managers every 18 months”. I say, nothing comes of sacking managers every few years. I think we should stick with Mick for a good while yet and that our patience will be rewarded. Most of the people calling for him to go haven’t got two brain cells to rub together.
Let’s wait and see how Incey comes through a bad patch - and he’ll have one as all managers do - before we rush to think of him as being the answer.
A fans favourite or not as a player, our fans have VERY short memories (as evidenced on this messageboard) and, make no mistake, if he didn’t deliver within 18 months people would be calling for his head too.
They would do the same for Bully. Indeed there was a time when Bully was booed by some idiots for trying his hardest to get on the scoresheet (without luck) against Bolton in the FA Cup. Remember? I do - I almost got punched for telling one of these mindless morons to shut up!

  7. kevin kearney said:

for Mick to say he never reads the fans or newspapers comments, good or bad shows ignorance and arrogance. If Mick stays until next December we will be in the same situation as now, he must go at the end of this season. If we don’t appoint Paul Ince by then, he will go elsewhere, and we all know he will do well as a manager.

    1) Trust me this ground is poor. I was there last season and will be tomorrow with our Birmingham contigent. It is somewhere like Halifax.
We have got to act quick if we want to get this Johnson from Boro, as Palace are linked today and I have seen that Sinclair has gone to Charlton.
Must win tomorrow and I think we need to revert back to a 4-4-2!

Number 5 brings up a good point, Terry Connor does anyone know when he joined the club? I think it was with Mark McGhee but i can’t be 100% sure. How is this guy still here, in my opinion when a manger is sacked or leaves the whole backroom staff that we working under him should be gotten ridden of also.

What are the E&S thinking in letting this fan have his own platform in which to present his reactionary drivel? There used to be a time where the local paper would be a source of informative news about our beloved football team – now we have whole pages dedicated to moronic ‘TXT’ messages and self proclaimed drivel the like of which can be found in this ‘blog’. Nathan clearly stated his position on McCarthy a few weeks ago, and is now firmly entrenched in the ‘We Want Mick Out’ camp. Fair enough – but do we really want to read his ‘justification’ in holding that viewpoint every time we draw or god forbid, win a game? The E&S has a lot to answer for. Surely there is a semi-literate Wolves aficionado they could have roped in to do this, if it has to be done? Or even better, why not get down to Compton and start writing interesting articles about our tactics, team and club? The idiots truly are running the asylum.

    Nathan!

I always wanted you to take up one of my ideas, I didn’t expect it to be a ‘fluffy’ one though!

I think that McCarthy will be here until the end of the season now and there are probably good reasons for that.

The first one is that it gives him a chance of the play offs and the second is that if we want that young and hungry manager (Ince,Ferguson etc…) then we will have to wait until the end of the season anyway.

I think over the last couple of weeks the intensity of feeling has fallen away, what with the abandoned game and an away victory. However I don’t believe that McCarthy has improved his chances I just feel that most people have resigned themselves to writing off the season, especially now that we have lost Kightly!

I appreciate that it is not good to swap and change managers every eighteen months but there has to be a limit, and I don’t buy into the theory that last season was that much to do with McCarthy anyway.

This season has seen him systematically dismantle our squad of young players and replace them with players of dubious ability, it isn’t just one or two ‘bad buys’ it is a whole raft of them! Add to that, team selection and tactics and it makes for a pretty poor season. The worst for many, many years in my and a lot of other peoples opinion. I can’t agree with the injury excuses either, every team gets injuries and so do we, every season. That is part of football!

So in conclusion I just feel that the end of the season will be quite enough thank you!

Sorry about the name Nathan, I’m sure it will fade away into the recesses of our memory, just like this season!

Good points 2 and 6, we need to stick by the manager and team. I say look at where we are this time next year before making any changes.

Paul Ince is still untested. One for the distant future perhaps.

One swallow doesn’t make a summer. There may be
a silver lining to Kites being out for the season. We rely on him too much and being forced to operate without him will make for a much stronger team in the long run.

Come on be positive and SUPPORT your team for once, instead of constantly moaning and whining and calling for poinless , brainless change for change’s sake.

    I agree entirely

    * We did overacheive last season
    * Mick did not improve the squad when given funds (especially the defence)
    * Give him until the end of the sason without doubt (although he appears to be cracking up and losing
    the plot right now)

    I disagree
    * About kightly. One man does not make a team. Our defence and putting square pegs into round holes
in midfield has cost us much more.

    AND IN RESPONSE TO 12
We are having a terrible season. This is apparently one of the strongest teams you have ever had,
and we are still only 8points behing you! Just highlights the difference in size and expectations of
    the 2 clubs i think.
I hope you enjoy losing at Wembley in the cup final and failing to get promoted again! (although i

As for being pro-Mick I think you will find I am in the ‘firmly undecided’ camp. I just don’t think these ‘blogs’ do anyone any favours. I do get cheesed off with people criticising others for having opinions. It is much better to air views in here than go along to the matches and boo the players, and there is nothing wrong with people having opinions even if you don’t agree with them.
My opinion is that the next 6 games are the crunch part of the season for Wolves - Colchester, Southampton, Preston, Burnley, Scunthorpe, QPR. These are all winnable matches for a team worthy of being promoted and I reckon if we don’t win at least 4 of them then the season is over.
Last week’s result was a good one, but I just read that we will be sticking to the same formation against Colchester and I am not sure that a one striker set up will get us the results we need. (mind you it could be argued that in some games this season we have played with no striker at all).

  35. Happy_baggie said:

Thinking about Nathan’s bloggs over the season and the general comments about MM from all fans on here, you should change your name to the Hokey Cokey Wanderers - In / Out / In / Out Morgan shakes it all about…

  36. WetWolf said:

I wasn’t in favour of MM when he was chosen to manage us. I thought he was a one dimensional manager with little idea when it comes to attack.
Then he came here and did a fantastic job last season under very difficult circumstances. His over achievement earned him some kudos with me. Kights is right to a point about his success leading to us having too high an expectation for this season.
Unfortunately his performance this season has lived down to that expectation, reinforcing my original opinion. The Kudos he had from last season is now more or less gone. It isn’t that we look unlikely to manage promotion (I didn’t realistically expect that so soon after the grand clear out). The problem for me is the way he has actually managed the squad, the way that he increased the expectations unrealistically and his lack of tactical variety.
His public attacks on players are BAD management. His seeming lack of understanding of forward play and attacking football is comparable with Kevin Keegan’s lack of knowledge on defensive football. The difference is KK acknowledged his shortfall and took steps to try and counter it. Mick seems unable to admit when he’s got it wrong.
I’ll grant that some of the players he has brought to the club have enhanced the squad. Many haven’t though. We have gone from having a very small squad to one of the largest in the division. However many of the additions haven’t been great buys.
Come the end of the season, Mick should judge himself by his own standards. At the beginning of the season he said that top two was the target and that a playoff place would be the lowest acceptable achievement. If he doesn’t manage this then he should go of his own accord, we shouldn’t need to sack him.
As for replacements, Gus Poyet would be my first choice. He may not have been manager himself but his record with every team he has worked with has been excellent. I think he was the reason for Leeds success at the beginning of the season (note what happened when he moved on) and the change at Spurs when he arrived there. He is going to be a great manager one day, be nice if it was with us.

  38. Greg Cooper said:

MM has just come out and admitted that it is unlikely he will bring in a loan player to replace Kites - in my opinion this is very poor management. It is patently obvious that we lack any real threat or distribution from the right-hand side of the pitch, yet McCarthy stubbornly insists that he will stick with Elliot on the right, despite him being a striker. It was this kind of mismanagement that partially led to Hoddle’s downfall as Wolves manager (ie Miller / Cort on the wing), so I think McCarthy should watch his back if he continues his downright refusal to accept what is staring the rest of us in the face. If things continue to go wrong then he should accept the blame and concede that he messed up - somehow I suspect that this will not happen in a million years.

No it didn’t touch a nerve, I was trying to give you the opportunity to write something that doesn’t sound childish, but again you miss the point!

I will answer your trite comments:

    1. I am not anti Wolves, being a season ticket holder for most years since 1972 rather disproves that theory.

    2. I try to think about the things I write and back it up with the facts that I find relevant.

    3. The definition of ‘Fickle’ is often changing and not loyal.

I am not disloyal to the club, the fact that I have attended nearly every home tie for over 35 years will attest to that. Also I have never changed my mind about McCarthy, try to avoid writing in cliches!

    4. There is lots of constructive things in many of my posts. My main constructive point is that I want to see our youth policy which has produced so much quality over the years backed up and as I have pointed out before, watching our home grown talent is a joy for me.

    5. Let me make this clear to you once and for all, I am not anti Wolves I am anti McCarthy and Moxey and I have reasons for feeling the way that I do.

Now, you disagree with me and that’s fine, however I find your constant attacks that are full of infantile ‘Tesco’ nonsense tedious. You say that I attract sheep and terrywalsallbagie, then you say it makes you chuckle, I say make your mind up.

The long and the short of it is everybody gets to write what they want to and everybody gets to read it, so your just going to have to put up with me just like I do with you!

If you want my opinion on Wolves this season here goes,
I think your crop of young players have suffered from a lack of confidence and this has resulted in them playing a safe style of football which has been interpreted by many as boring. I think if you could put two maybe three good results together the confidence of last season could return and a march up the table to follow. Kites is a big miss, and if Mick could have his summer funds back would have invested in a creative central midfielder and a pacy centre half.
I also beleive that the media have not helped by highlighting the in fighting amongst fans this season, it has only served to fuel speculation and player dissatisfaction.

I’m afraid, some of the responses to this blog mirror a number of the problems at the club and
its fortunes this season. I’m always astounded by the negativity that surrounds Molineux and its ‘fans’.
I have been a Wolves fan for nearly 30 years, but in the last two seasons have had reason to visit that lot
down the road (a friend works for them).
It is with a real sense of shame that I witnessed first hand how the Albion fans stuck with their team and didn’t boo misplaced passes or get on their team’s back if they hadn’t scored within the first 10 minutes.
I have thought long and hard about our fans and why they should be so negative - after all it is a problem
that has accounted for a number of previously very successful managers.
Is it a lack of knowledge, intelligence, patience or a combination of all three? I can only remember two seasons in the last 10 where the fans have truly been behind the players and not looking to crucify them.
Last season was obviously one and the season we were in the Premiership where no one seriously expected us to survive with the signings Dave Jones made or was allowed to make.
It is a real shame that the spirit of those two seasons has not been created this term and, while I accept that has a good deal to do with the brand of football that has been delivered, we do at least try to play the right way even if our formation is rigid and without the fluency of our near neighbours.
Whether Mick should stay or go is a question for the end of the season.
We can all see we are not good enough for the Premiership; a collection of centre halfs which are
slower than a weekend in jail is not a recipe for survival in the world’s toughest League.
However, a positive finish to the season (and the next half dozen games are very winnable) would help to return some of the feel good factor from last season.
Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for it. Think twice before moaning and criticising
as the glass is half full not empty, we have a great club with a real chance of achieving something in the next couple of seasons, lets break the mould and throw our collective weight behind their efforts.

To the vast majority looking for Morgan to finally see the light there is hope.

It looks as if Mad Mick is already moonlighting- check out Damages on BBC1 Monday and Friday evenings.
Surely it is him playing Arthur Frobisher opposite Glenn Close.

Hollywood comes to our rescue !
