Three bitten as dog goes on rampage

Andrew BlewittA rampaging dog savaged three women in the street after escaping from a back garden, Wolverhampton magistrates heard.

Owner Andrew Blewitt was ordered to pay the victims compensation.

The Alsatian bit Maureen Gibbons four times on the leg and arm before the terrified 73-year-old managed to escape over a garden fence. She needed hospital treatment. Julie Morris saw the incident in Mount Road, Willenhall, through a window of her home and went to help. But the animal then attacked her, sinking its teeth into her backside, said prosecutor Maggie Meakin.

She dashed back into her house and managed to slam the door on the animal as it tried to get into the property. Minutes later the Alsatian targeted 65-year-old Maureen Perry outside her home in nearby Tobruk Walk, Portobello. Mrs Meakin told the court: “It was with a smaller dog and lunged at the woman biting her on the back of the leg.”

Blewitt, aged 22, from Vaughan Road, Portobello admitted three charges of allowing an out of control dog to cause injury in a public place. He was ordered to complete 260 hours unpaid work and to pay a total of £325 to victims.

Mrs Perry, one of those bitten, said: “I was very shaken but understand that the older dog was guarding the puppy - it was like a mother looking after her child - and I did not want them destroyed.”

Both the dog and the owner should be caught, caged and taken to the vets.
