A motorist today appeared in court charged with causing the death of a Wolverhampton carer on the city’s busy ring road.
Married father-of-three Anthony Corinaldi, aged 38, made a brief appearance at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court today to face a string of motoring offences.
It followed a crash on the city’s ring road on Tuesday morning in which Marcella Barnes, aged 47, was knocked down as she crossed traffic lights near the junction with Stafford Street.
The court heard today that Ms Barnes had been thrown into the air by the force of the impact and had come to rest almost 40 metres away. Traffic was backed up on major routes into the city centre following Tuesday’s tragedy. Police sealed off a stretch of the ring road for several hours. Police investigating the collision recovered a red VW Golf in Eversley Grove, Wednesfield, a short time later.
Corinaldi was arrested at Wednesfield police station at around 10.20am on the day of the tragedy.
Dressed in a blue shirt, jumper and jeans, Corinaldi also denied careless driving and driving without an MOT, insurance and licence relating to an incident on New Year’s Day this year in Hordern Road, Whitmore Reans.
The court heard that he had owned a garage which repaired vehicles for more than two years, and employed a small workforce.
An application for bail was rejected and he was remanded in custody.
Officers today renewed an appeal for anyone who saw Ms Barnes or the crash itself to contact road policing officers at Bilston Street police station on 0845 113 5000.
