Moxey defends late decision

MolineuxWolves today defended the late postponement of last night’s Scunthorpe clash which left fans fuming.

Many supporters were baffled as to why it took until near 6pm to have the game called off. One angry supporter had even travelled all the way from Dublin to find the game off.

Chief Executive Jez Moxey explained that a ‘malfunction’ to the undersoil heating system at Molineux had forced last night’s postponement.

Wolves brought in six industrial heaters to pump hot air on to the playing surface, but in the end proved in vain and match referee Mark Haywood called off the game at 5.40pm.

“We couldn’t get enough heat back into the system throughout the day for the one part of the ground in the south side,” said Moxey. “We brought in some industrial heaters and covered the pitch with our frost covers.

“We had been pumping in hot air underneath the covers in an attempt to try and thaw the top of the pitch as the undersoil heating was by then thawing the underneath. But it was so cold that our efforts failed and unfortunately the game has had to be postponed. I think our record is as good as anybody’s and I think this is only the third game that’s been postponed in 15 seasons at Molineux.

“But we’re bitterly disappointed. You can always say with hindsight we should have done something better but we wanted to play football, Scunthorpe wanted to play football and both sets of supporters wanted to see a game. I think its incumbent upon us to try and do our level best to try and get the game on. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.

“I’d like to apologise to the Wolves fans and apologise to the Scunthorpe fans that had set out on the journey.”

The frozen section of the Molineux surface which prevented the game going ahead now leaves Wolves with dates to find for re-arranged home games against Scunthorpe and Albion.

The Black Country derby, set for March 9, has been postponed because of the Baggies Cup run but with Scunthorpe signalling no hurry for an immediate re-arrangement and the new derby date subject to police consultation, it could mean a busy April for Mick McCarthy’s side.

Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins said: “I am disappointed because we were up for it. We could have got out of the bottom three. But when I went on the pitch, it wasn’t playable, end of story.”

Forget about the frozen pitch/heating problem. These things happen.

The issues I have is we seem to take players who are on fire, and strip them of quality and confidence. Its almost like we train the good out of them and install negativity.

Eastwood and Ebanks would no doubt score goals at other clubs, based on the fact they already have.

I can understand fans who voice their frustrations but maybe we should look at the training side of things. Its as if we see a good player and then change the way he likes to play making him worse!

    Who to blame:

The Manager for not changing the coaching staff.
The manager for playing people out of their original successful positions.
The Chief Exec for appointing the manager.
The owner for not identifying the weakness in the Chief Exec.

At this point I think blame can go to a few places. Morgan has not been here long and has not voiced his opinions as yet.
I do not like the way Moxey refers to Morgan and himself as we………I would hope Morgan will Make decisions on his own without his influence. This is where Sir Jack failed.

Issues do need addressing. In order to make the playoffs we are looking at winning even as many as 10 games. Can we do it?? Its not impossible but its not probable but either way the training of the team seems to be a key area of imporovement.

It is quite shocking that with the fact there was no way the game would be on, fans were left to wait for a confirmed decision unil 6. Fortunately, I have about a 20 minute drive to the ground so I was not too badly affected, but I feel for those who were!

Quite right Eddie Wolf. Our London Wolves fans left London at just after 3.00pm, while our members from Brighton, Norwich and Kent left even earlier. Then there was the journey home! Expensive and frustrating!

    Thanks Jez,

I leftthe house at 2.30 to get to Wolverhampton for the game, so a little warning before 4.00ish would have helped.

Fanially I join the anti Jez brigade, the quicker this idiot leaves Wolves the better. We are a large club with travelling fans and this is how we are treated. Pathetic.

You really want to apologise, then tender your resignation.

I shall not be renewing my season ticket with this clown still at Wolves and his persistent disregard for the fans.

Wolves did all they could in the circumstances to make the pitch playable. The club wanted the game on for some much needed points and confidence going into a difficult run of away games.

Had the club called the game off at 4, there would have been fans whinging that the club didn’t do all they could to get the game on - so they couldn’t win.

At the moment some fans are just looking to have a pop at the club.

We were all disappointed that the game was off, and don’t get me wrong - I feel for those that have to travel any distance to the game.

Rich, what are you on about. Next time you have sentient thought be sure to write it down, otherwise leave the innane jiberings to those around you. What is it your saying that the trainers at our club are actually making our players play bad, what a ridiculous statement. Unless they’re forcing them to eat donuts and telling them to let in goals, which I don’t think they are, then surely they’re just trying to help them.

But congratulations, for coming up with the most ridiculous argument for the sacking of MM.

Baggy for ever may yet be forced to eat his/her words as there is no guarantee Tesco are going anywhere. I’m sure he/she will get a warm welcome to Molineux on that late April evening when Tesco may need 3 points to go up/get in play offs. As regards the farcical heating situation yesterday, it just seems ridiculous that no routine testing seems to have been carried out during tghe middle of winter. Unbelievable !! Never mind, we remained unbeaten last night and can now go to Palace on Saturday and build on that. I will be there for a good day out in London and a few beers along the way (not sure how long i will last at the actual game though!). We are Wolves!

Have just read Moxey’s latest comments about last nights postponement and the backing of McCarthy. Regarding the postponement do these people even know what day of the week it is because they certainly don’t admit to getting anything wrong.

Regarding Moxey’s endorsement of McCarthy he is saying that we have had the manager for 18 months and things have only gone wrong for the last 3. Wrong. Things have steadily gone wrong from pre season even if the results have only now started to go wrong. We were lucky to beat Coventry, Colchester, Preston and Sheffield Wednesday to name but four games. I was about to renew my early bird season ticket but now I am having massive second thoughts and this now has nothing to do with results on the pitch although that is bad enough. No apology for last nights fiasco and a ringing endorsement of our manager. I can’t (and won’t) take much more.

  16. wath wanderer said:

Rich5wolves< there’s an awful lot of truth in what you say and i for one would not trust Moxey with the time and date, i would simply have to confirm it by looking at my calendar and watch.

Now for that heating issue, my understanding was when the ground rebuilding was complete that we had a state of the art underground heating system which was controlled by a computer which had all the built in warning signs and there was no need for us to consult the weather stations to switch it on or off as the case maybe it did it automatically. So it would have had built into it any warning devices to raise concerns and alert staff that certain areas of the pitch were not responding. The ground would not freeze that quickly (unless it had been switched off/overidden before hand) and they would and should of noticed that there was a malufunction well before match day. Therefore you could draw the conclusion that it was pre-meditated and that the club took a gamble that after Cardiff there would be a huge and venomous backlash from the fans should anything even minor go wrong last night so to call it off would allow the fans tempers and anger to cool (10 days or so) by having a couple of away matches. The only problem is if we lose at palace and either win, lose or draw a Colchester there could be an even greater storm awaiting to sweep across the golden palace. Its a mighty big ask for a team so low in confidence to win both away games don’t you think??

We as ever as wolves fans live in hope!!

  17. rich5wolves said:

Newbridge Wolf - If the players are being trained right, Mcarthy is playing them in the right positions, then why are they playing such garbage???

Seems to me that training is the problem. And I didnt say Mcarthy should go but the blame is not totally his……………

    Your ramblings are actually irrelavent…………

Stef from Bromley (5) I thought of you guys last night. As an ex London wolf, I know what time you have to leave for matches. In my days of driving from London to Mol’ i would have left at 4:00 pm, and would have therefore spent at least 2 hours on the road before any radio announcement.

  19. dan said:

Its just one of those things, they could and should have called it off earlier but they were trying their best to get the ganme on.

It amazes me that such a small thing snowballs into such a large issue. As for Mick he has only been in charge for 18 months of which 12 were a huge success.

Give him till next season and see how it goes, if it is still as bad as it is now, get rid of him and bring Incey in.

I heard Mr Moxey say that the heating system broke down on Monday night, then the temporary heaters were started at 3pm yesterday afternoon. So what on earth happened in between? Absolute shambles. Thank God we had Skysport on TV otherwise we’d have set off for the match. From Perton! And I was angry enough! If you support Wolves or Scunthorpe and live beyond Wolverhampton I feel so sorry for you. You have every right to feel disgusted. It is totally unacceptable these days to have a match called off in these circumstances at a technologically sophisticated ground with modern facilities and safeguards. Can you imagine this happening to the Liverpool/Inter Milan match? Of course not. We are a joke club from top to bottom.

I do however feel that ppl like Windsor Wolf etc have been hard done by. It should of been announced so much more early. Sorry guys. :(

  22. jan rhodes said:

I know that the frosty pitch could not have been avoided due to the heating broke down, but surely it was known early yesterday morning that there was a problem and I agree that we should have had more notice that the game was off.

There are lots of Wolves fans that travel a long way who are now out of pocket because it costs money to travel and what about the Scunthorpe fans they had to travel as well and they were probably in Wolverhampton by the time it was called off.

Mr Moxey you said it has been 15 years since we had to cancel a match I remember when we were in the Premiership last time, and arrived at the ground when we played Liverpool to be told that the match was off because of the snow and that was not fifteen years ago.

I’m with Newbridge wolf on this one. Rich5wolves seems determined that we must blame training for our recent poor form. I just don’t see how this can possibly be the case. It feels like your clutching at straws for somebody or something to blame.
Firstly, our training facilities are now second to none in the championship. Now I realise that facilities alone cannot adequately prepare a team for a game, but I can assure you that they do make a significant positive impact. Secondly, do you assume that our training methods have changed that drastically over the last 12 months? Surely taking the squad we had last year into the playoffs was partly down to good training methods? You have to admit that Kightly, Keogh, Henry have all improved in their time here.
Our current form is very dissapointing but lets all try not to wet our pants, and stick to the plan of developing a young and hungry side. We have a much better squad than this time last year and the lads have learnt a lot this season. If we bring in a new manager now we’ll be starting from square one, and you can bet whoever it is they will ask for 3 seasons to build their team. Were 18 months into McCarthys 3 years, lets not make the same mistakes over and over again.
Stability has to be the way forward, certainly the hiring and firing blame culture has been proved to fail.

Free kicks corners they all bunch together in the six yard box and no one runs in to attack the ball. Throw in’s they dont’t move the person taking the throw only has one person available.

Lets not forget MM is in overall control so he is to blame, after the Cardiff mauling he removed his rose tinted glasses and saw what we have known all season ie- we are rubbish caused by poor team selection, players playing out of postion, too much favouritisum and being to stubbern to play certain player and prefering Sunderland rejects to the likes of Gleeson, Davies , Rosa ok they may be injured now but they are never given a chance.
I just hope we can avoid relegation !!!!

rich5wolves (2) is blaming him for appointing the manager in the first place, but I bet you a month’s wages that rich5wolves wasn’t adulating Mr. Moxey at the end of last season…

OK but look at the possible outcome. The club announce at midday that the match is in doubt. Those further afield decide not to travel. The pitch thores and the game is on. Those farther afield who did not travel now come on here whingeing and moaning that they were told too soon (the clubs fault for communicating of course!) and would have travelled had the club not been so hastey. Whatever the club do these people will moan because that is the only reason for their existence! I know that, as you pointed out, to travel would have been their decision, but these people would take no responsibility for anything. They just want a scapegoat to kick. That scapegoat is the club!

Here’s a “Whingeing idiot” with an idea:

As soon as officials at the club realised the undersoil heating had malfunctioned the club should have posted an update on their website, and passed the information onto the Express and Star and BBC that there was a problem, but that they were doing everything they could to rectify the situation. That way I and other “Whingeing idiots” could make an informed decision about travelling up to Wolverhampton. I had nearly a 200 mile trip yesterday which I might have avoided. I take this trip whenever I want to see Wolves play. So, idiot that I am, I feel entitled to whinge when the club left it to mid afternoon to issue their first warning - after long distance fans had already set out. When they did make their announcement it seems to have been on the internet or Sky, neither of which are accessible whilst driving on the motorway - so radio WM would have helped.

I am not moaning for the sake of it - I wasted time and money travelling yesterday.

I did not say they should have called the game off earlier - I understand why they didnt…but they could have let travelling fans, both Wolves and Scunthorpe know that there was a problem much much earlier.

Any way thats it from my half brain.

Oh and thankyou for the personal comments.
