Wolves blog: Shambles all the way

Wolves manager Mick McCarthyAre they fit to wear the shirt?  Never mind Karl Henry saying that Saturday’s performance was a shambles, most of our season has been shambolic up to now, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

Mick’s successful regeneration plan of last season has been decimated this campaign.  Players being played out of position, Mick’s favourites playing instead of trying someone new, the slow defence, the misfiring strike force, Craddock at Stoke, the Freddy debacle, Rosa, Davies, Gleeson…. The case for the prosecution just gets stronger and stronger.

History shows us that managers of Wolves have a canny knack of bringing in a player that serves to be the final death nail in their Molineux career.

Assisting the end of Hoddle’s Wolves tenure was the signing of that missing piece of the jigsaw, Tomasz Frankowski, and Colin Lee enlisted the help a goalless hunchback in the form of Robert Taylor which helped towards his early exit.

Mick McCarthy hasn’t aided his downfall with the purchase of a million pound player, but instead on a loan signing journey man.

Why on earth would Kevin Kyle, with his 22 goals in an eight-year career, be shipped in as a solution to a frontline that is struggling for goals and confidence?

Why break up what looked like flourishing into a promising partnership in Keogh and SEB, just so Mick could try and replicate his little and large act (Quinn & Phillips) from his Sunderland days?

Saturday’s abject performance against Cardiff seemed to be just one miserable result too far for the travelling fans.

The cries of “You’re not fit to wear your shirt” was a real awakening to many of the Wolves players who had come back out for a post-match warm down (did they ever warm-up?)

But the fact is that there are so many players from this season that I would be more than happy never to see in the old gold ‘n’ black ever again.

In fact it would be quicker to list the handful of players who I would currently welcome back at Molineux for another go at a promotion tilt.

Mick might be a straight talking Yorkshire man, but he really needs a lesson in saying the right things after we don’t get the result we crave.

Stating that he is pleased with a point from our trip to Blackpool is bad enough but to then add that he doesn’t look at the league table until the end of April is just plain madness.

Well great Mick, we have one game left to play come May and if we are 15 points off the play-offs it could be tricky to catch up.

I really wanted McCarthy to do it this season and after the finish to last season the signs were there that he would.

I backed him in this blog, sometimes against my better judgment, simply to try and help keep fans positive for the coming months.

I remember a couple of back to back 1-0 victories at the end of November and the start of December.  All the confidence and sharpness had appeared to have fallen out of our play from the previous campaign and I had that horrible feeling that something just wasn’t right.

We just haven’t got going since the turn of the year and our winless streak in February probably finds the team at its lowest ebb so far.

Of course I’ll be taking up my early bird.  However bad it gets Wolves are in my blood and I couldn’t really seriously contemplating not going.

But there does seem to be a few serious season ticket holders out there adamant that enough is enough, and have vowed not to return for the next campaign in case it turns out to as bad as the current one.

And so to tonight’s game against the Championship bottom club, Scunthorpe.

I fear the booing, which I never condone, could start earlier than ever, even pre-match if either Elliott or Kyle are named amongst the starting 11.

If the worst should happen and we go a goal down as early as we have done in recent games, then the crowd could turn on both the team and the manager in a vitriolic manner we have yet to witness so far this season.

I wish the team all the best tonight, but I fear that Mick needs this win more than any other so far to prevent his rollercoaster Molineux career finally derailing for good.

Well said Nathan; some of McCarthy’s comments after Cardiff do suggest that even he knows his time is coming to an end. And what is he talking about when he says there has been a vast improvement since last season when we looked like relegation candidates when he came. He would like us to think that. When did we ever look like relegation candidates last season? The only time we have looked like that is most of this season. I have said before and I will say again. The problems started when McIndoe was allowed to leave. What did he know that we didn’t?

Wouldnt it be crazy if the person that actually bought Robert Taylor (behind Colin Lee’s back & without his knowledge) was still at the Club.

Mr Morgan needs a very big axe … & needs to rebuild the entire club

Merely changing manager wont make us a big club again … hasnt so far wont again

Totally agree. Very well said. Its such a stark contrast to last season, which is the hard bit to swallow. There was guts, fight and determination. Yeah we wernt the best team in the league, but we made up for that in all the qualities i just mentioned. This season, its all evaporated. Where is that team? We are meant to be better, these young wolves should have grown with the experience. But its simply not happened. The eastwood senario is a strange one and there has to be more to it. To put the goal scoring machine Kyle in front of him in the pecking order is ludicrous. All managers have their favourites, but to play people out of position just to accomodate them is ridiculous. I fear the season is almost over for us already… but never say never… stranger things have happened… quite what, im not yet sure but we’ll see…

Got to give it to you. As a self proclaimed “Happy Clapper” (I think thats what we are known as). I’ve buckled under the pressure….and it bloody hurts.

I hate the boo boys - I understand why they do it but I can’t help but support the manager when players play like they did on Saturday (yes I was there).

But what now? Mick has done what he can and I have to say, last season was a fluke.

Boo boys - you are right - Happy Clappers - sorry guys - as Gus Puyet sais “Enough is enough”.

I’d rather have Jeremy Kyle and his lie detector test up front….

how many fans want him to stay, and if you do why? look at the big picture, what has he done nothing, did well with very little last season but we didnt do anything. look at the situation with freddie, jody to stoke, playing favourites, players out of position, kyle whats that all about sorry another favourite, hes dropped all the youngsters that “put in more than a shift last season”, but remember its never his fault. The only good thing thats happened to the team is the arrival of freddie who he wont play, ebanks blake still has to proove himself, the youngsters who his dropped for his mates and kites, who muppet mick never saw play prior to his arrival. McCarthy your a joke. I shouldnt say this but i hope scunthorpe get something out of tonight cause i personally want you out.

4.roynreeanie….. My sentiments exactly. The club is rotten to its core and it has been for 15 years. The last manager to come in and start to rebuild was Graham Taylor. He wanted a complete structure but the board at the time wanted instant success. We need to get rid of Moxey, McCarthy. Conner and everyone attached to the coaching staff for the 1st team. We need to bring in a new director of football and a new 1st team manager some one who is in touch with the modern game. 2 years ago we let Paul Ince leave but he would have taken the club to a new level had he been given the time and resources to do so . Why let a man leave who has played and captained Man Utd , Liverpool Inter Milan, Middlesboro,England. His knowledge of the game and his pure pressence in the dressing room would have commended respect. We do not have a club captain with the guts of what he had. The club at the moment has no leader. We have several good young players but it is like a ship without a skipper slowly going off course. This once great club is slowly being ripped away from the fans by Moxey. We all know if we return to the Premeir league one day and we stabilise in there the ground would need to be expanded in some way or at leats fill in the corners. Act now Mr Morgan but i really believe you will do it in May when this season is over and we finish about 10th and you can justify the sacking ..

we are all wolves through and through and want to see the team doing well… and it annoys the hell out of us when we can clearly see whats wrong and MM doesn’t fixes it! i.e defence etc and what happened to all our young guns who we could get behind?

but i think, regardless of the results that nothing will change till the end of the season…. then i think we shall see Mr Morgan ruthless streak…i hope….

Nathan, I was like you a few months ago, lets give Mick a bit longer. Mainly through injuries and the forthcoming transfer window approaching, I thought a couple of good buys in key areas whould turn things around, but dispite the arrival of SEB, the performances have not improved, the defence is a joke (charlie nicholas - sky sports) and I can’t see us getting any better.

I say get MM & his ex sunderland / Irland players OUT OF THE TEAM NOW, give someone new a few months to assess the playing and backgound staff ready to launch into the transfer market as soon as the season ends, get the players minds back on the job, not the money / good life and lets go for promotion next year.

Good blog yet again Nathan and good to hear of your intention to remain loyal to the team in the form of another season ticket for next year . Unfortunately , after more than 50 years of solid support , I will probably not be joining you . The football this season has left me in despair on many an occasion and I am dumbfounded by many of the teams put out by our manager . Last season Mark little played more than 30 games , this season he has had less than 30 minutes . Gleeson was lauded during his time at Stockport and is the capatin of the Irish Under 21’s . He scores regularly for them including 2 against Germany . His rewuad , nowhere near the first team at Molineux . Daniel Jones , a natural left side player was sent to Northampton and allowed to become cup tied despite our losing McIndoe before a ball was kicked this season . He is brought back with the manager saying we will need him and what does he get ? , an immediate sub appearance and then nothing . The saga with regard to Freddy can go on and on but following his match winning performance against Blackpool at the beginning of the season , the manager interviewed on the radio said ‘ I take no credit for Freddy , we knew he was a good player and that was why we brought him to the club ‘ . Some fans have , rightly , pointed out that in his substitute appearances he has failed to score but , in mitigation , I would say that if you are not playing reserve games and are only being used as a sub it is difficult to be totally match fit . I believe that he is a natural goalscorer and , having obviously seen the way he played before we signed him , we should have built our team around his strengths. His game has been destroyed this season and I fear he will move elsewhere and perhaps come back to haunt us . A sad and bad season I’m afraid and , for me sadly , perhaps a season too far under the present management .

I think the fact you the Wolves fans are now discussing Mick every single week means his days are well and truly numbered. Anything other than a win tonight may see a change in the hotseat. Great point made by Nath regarding each previous Manager signing a useless player which then becomes a beating stick for the fans to use, and lets face it, you cannot get one much bigger than Mr Kyle!!
I would just point out one slight error in the blog, surley SEB did not play due to being cup tied????

Agreed, Boothyrod, Elliot and Kyle (why oh why!) should never play for waolves again! We all knew we needed a Defender and a Striker at start of season! Eastwood has not been given a chance ( he doesnt even get reserve games). Moreover, we have bags of youth potential. Huges has scored a few why not give him a chance, Gleeson loosk useful little and jones have pace!

Nathan, another superb blog. I am going to say that tonight and before anybody’s knocks me “I will be there in the south bank” if wolves lose against Scunny I think he will walk. Wolves would be 7pts behind Ipswich, and playing catch up. Too be honest the way the team is playing we will struggle to win another 5 games between now and the end of the season. Wolves need a massive internal clear out. From Moxey who has been a PR disaster right down the to the coaching staff. We are no futher forward in footballing terms since the mid 90’s. Our dismal record of 1 appearance in the premiership is poor considering teams like charlton, middlesboro, fulham, pompey, newcastle, bolton, derby, birmingham city, wigan, sunderland, watford, have all gained promotion to the top flight whilst we after millions of pounds been spent have languished in the championship. Steve Morgan needs to be hand on more I think. I alot has been said about SJH tenure ship and for love and money he has been brilliant for wolves, his inept foolish son wasted money with Mcghee and taylor which gave us the golden tit outburst. But Morgan needs to look at the history and make sure it doesn’t repeat itself. Lets face it we dont want another 19 years out of the top flight do we.

Mental Micky as much as we over achieved last season, he has been found out. His interviews of late are bizarre, defeatish and has the sounds of someone who wishes the season to be over now “DOESNT LOOK AT THE TABLE UNTIL APRIL” Wolves will not be in the promotions shake up by middle of march! A beaten man. If he has any ounce of credability then he should walk. The decisions he has made in the summer, selling McIndoe to Bristol City as well as the loaning of craddock to stoke started his downfall. Internally, Evans left, so did Kunle which makes you wonder if they too were fed up with Mental Mickys bizarre training methods. I am not there at compton so I am merely speculating but it does make you wonder… The freddie debate rumbles on, MM love for elliott, ward and the sunderland rejects is the final nail in the coffin. This is MM team and on paper it doesnt look not that bad, but if he played them in the correct positions then perhaps results will improve. I think in my opinion he needs to be sacked, there is no confidence in that team and the buck stops with the manager.

    MENTAL MICKY OUT!

I was well aware that SEB was cup-tied for the Cardiff game, but Kyle has been brought in on loan and then got straight into the starting line up after one sub appearance.

Even without SEB we could have played Freddy and Keogh up front.

And yes, I do feel that Kyle will turn into a stick which the fans use to beat McCarthy with, but we have so much more ammunition at our fingertips.

The club seem to be saying that they are going to stick by their man no matter what happens on the pitch.

All very creditable I’m sure, and I agree with that in principle too. However the thing that is most irritating about this is that both the club and some of our supporters wheel this line out as gospel, almost saying that everything will be ok just so long as we stick with the manager.

What if the appointment was wrong in the first place and just who picks the managers? That is the problem, if we had good managers to start with then we wouldn’t be in the position we are now.

McCarthy has broken the spirit of the fans, he has turned them against each other and the club are not helping with some of the trite comments about the way fans react to the team.

One week they say it is terrible and the fans shouldn’t boo, then the next they are agreeing with them and think they have a point. They can’t have it both ways!

In the last twenty years I think we have had no more than 3 decent managers. The amount of money wasted, the fact that we have to put up with Mr. Smug (Moxey) telling us that the club are going in the right direction. The fact that when we appeared at last to be going somewhere under Dave Jones they pulled the rug from under his feet. It all is starting to turn into a seismic catastrophe that has been going on for more years than we care to admit.

With the sale of the club to Steve Morgan, lots of fans are thinking that this is an opportunity to make wholesale changes and flush away our underachieving past.

I hope this is the case, please Mr Morgan. Believe what you see in front of you and act now!

I can’t understand how McCarthy has managed to throw away the hard work of last year. He had a talented bunch of youngsters who played attacking football and could have used this year for them to learn more about each other as a team. Instead it appears that he never really had any confidence in them and was forced into using them due to the lack of funds.

This year he has stuck with his favourites and performances have hit rock bottom compared to last year.

There is obviously a problem with Freddy Eastwood, but I can’t help but think that he just isn’t good enough.

My way forward would be to pull all the stops out get Paul Ince. He can handle the players and doesn’t have the baggage of relying on ex Sunderland players. There is now no doubt that he is a talented football manager given his achievements since being overlooked by Wolves.

Good post Nathan, could you clear something up for me….. is it true that when Morgan took over, part of the deal was that MM and Moxey had to be kept on till the end of the season!! If this is correct then surely no matter how much we call for MM and Moxey`s head they are not going to roll till the end of the season….. earliest. this would explain the lack of anything coming from Morgan. Even if this is true then surely the backroom staff should be GONE. The standard of coaching is abysmal, for instance… do you ever think we are gonna score at a free kick or corner? Do the opposition look like they are gonna score at every corner or free kick? Does it look like when we get a good signing (Foley) he ends up nothing special after he has been trained by us for a few months!! When someone gets loaned out they are great (Gleeson, Jones, Little) till they get back and are subjected to our training. This is not just this season it has happened for too many. Where do we go from here…. total clearout which a lot of people have been asking for for years, but as per normal the cheap option is taken and just get rid of the manager. I would personally go for Ince with his own staff. Like Keegan at Newcastle, he will get the respect of the fans for a lot longer than most and bring up to date and fresh way of managing

How can you not see that Moxey is part of the equation? Who appoints managers, who writes messages in the match day program and puts rebukes to the fans into the E&S? If he is just the finance man then why does he sound off about everything? Remember his very public criticism of Glen Hoddle, everything at the club seems to be within his remit, so he can stand up and take the flack now!

Why do you say that sacking the manager doesn’t work. Sometimes it does work, We sacked Colin Lee and brought in Dave Jones. Your argument doesn’t hold for that one does it!

Then you say “who are we going to bring in?” You then try to clarify your point by naming the worst manager you can think of in order to make a point!

The point about hiring and firing works both ways, to use the Ferguson analogy that is so popular amongst the anti firing brigade, where would Manchester United be now if they had stuck with Ron Atkinson?

What ever your viewpoint on this matter it would all be made redundant if the right appointment was made in the first place!

One thing is for sure, if the fans vote with their feet on this matter the club will very quickly respond by giving McCarthy the bullet, their highly principled stance will turn to dust when it stars to hurt in the wallet!

It’s a sorry fact, that for too long now, Wolves fans have had to endure the rubbish that the team dish up week in, week out.
Part of the problem is that we were spoilt in the past.
The Cullis team of the 50’s started it.
Relegation followed in 1965 & another 2 Seasons in Div 2
    League Cup win in 74
    Relegation in 76
    Promotion in 77
    League Cup win in 80
    Then came the Bhatti era….
Its not just last season Wolves have failed to build on their relative success, it’s been going on for ages!
However, I think we have reached the end of the road viz a vie McCarthy,Moxey & Connor.
Steve Morgan is no one’s fool.
He didn’t make his millions by fluke.
Even he must realise that changes have to be made to bring Wolves back to their “former” glory.
The alleged £30 million he was to use for team building would’ve been recouped in one promotion to the Premiership.
McCarthy is not up to the job of spending wisely.
Moxey has control of the purse strings & he must be accountable for the bad investments.
Connor has a coach is a poor excuse.
Changes HAVE to be made, the sooner the better.
Last Saturdays performance would’ve had Billy Wright turning in his grave

I have two season tickets for the upper steve bull stand, which i’ve had for twenty five years. However, I can,t stand much more of MM strange team selections and weird after match comments. I have tried to defend the manager up to now but no more.
Please Mr Morgan take charge and get rid of MM now! if you don’t the early bird will not work, and the new manager won’t have time to evaluate the players before the summer.
As for 35mrsmug you put forward steve mclaren as a possibility, I can only assume that you are a west brom fan or just deranged.
Only Big Sam ticks all the boxes and although he would be expensive
I believe that giving him a watertight five year contract and plenty of funds for the summer would bring stability and success
    to Wolves

Putting Eastwood on tonight and judging him on 90 mins would not be fair. I’ve said it often enough all strikers go thro lean patches and he has by no stretch of the imagination been able to get a decent run in the side because McCarthy doesn’t want him, because he doesn’t run around like a headless chicken putting in the proverbial shift, whatever that means.

I think nathan you raise some valid points in your blog, but those who say “that something in club hasn’t been right, for at least 15 years” are very much on the right lines and I do wish i could tell them what it is but unfortunately I can’t because we as supporters are not privvy to what is going on inside the club. Winning tonight is important for the supporters but I’m not sure it will bring any respite for McCarthy as you all say they are bottom and we don’t seem to do well against clubs at the foot of the table do we?

My only other thought is that M&M’s melt and disintegrate in the heat don’t they??

Nathan Great blog, i also have been critical of your blogs in the past but i think every wolves fan is united now in saying enough is enough!

1 slight problem to what you said though up there, Phillips and Quinn never played under McCarthy at Sunderland. Quinn had retired at that point and Phillips was playing somewhere else. He had Kyle and Elliot (and look what that got him!!!!!)

I agree I do think Kyle will be the bum signing, but what annoys me is why did he state that Kyle was going to be an impact player then start him for the last 3 games. I feel for Freddie at times, but this really took the biscuit this weekend dropping him not only for the inept Kyle but Lazy and big mouthed Bothroyd too.

I love Bothroyd in full flow, you can really see he has quality then, but i can count on 1 hand how many times we have seen this!

I do honestly think not only will MM’s down fall be the Kyle signing (and results and performances) but his dealings in the transfer market. Anyone can see the defence was weak, yet no signings or not even acknowledging it was weak came during January.

Saturday he stated the 4-3-3 formation may of worked if the team hadnt gone 2-0 down so early…..maybe this crazy selection in the first place resulted in us being 2-0 down!!

I like how MM is upfront, but I also hate how he will not look at his own failings and his own mistakes! I fear MM will be remembered for the simple statement “i didnt do it” when he eventually leaves the club (or gets the push!)

Heres hoping for a win tonite, im flying over ready so come on, lets get behind the team 1 last time, but anything but a win tonite and im afraid its GOT TO BE bye bye MM!!

Apologies, you had a point. It was nearly 1am when I finished the blog and I must admit my research strengths had ebbed away. Your right, Quinny and Phillips were a Reidy combination. McCarthy would have spotted how good they were and quickly brought in a substandard player to ruin the party!

Andy hughes. I am not a fan of Eastwood, but he did well when he came on. The team as a whole were dreadful. We can say that we were forced to make wholesale changes to the line-up, but we still should have been able to put in a much better showing than we did. I did not boo, but was more than unhappy with that performance. It was by far and away the worst I have seen this season. (Well, maybe with the exception of Hull home and away.)

It will take a turnaround on the proportions of Mafeking to turn this season around, but as I have said previously on here, I remain an optimist.

I would start Eastwood and Ebanks-Blake up front tonight, and give Eastwood a few games. He will either show he is good enough, or is not. It’s a win-win situation. If he is good enough, we win games. If he’s not good enough, it may put the debate to bed once and for all. The fact that SEB will attack the box, with Eastwood and Edwards arriving late may cause headaches for defences. I would play Keogh on the right wing.

I still believe that if we have a good run from now to the end of the season some on here would still call for McCarthy’s head. As for “fans” who hope our beloved Wolves lose tonight, SHAME ON YOU. I could never want us to lose, no matter what. I don’t rate Eastwood overall, but if he is playing with a Wolves shirt on his back, I want him to score hat-tricks every game, and will cheer myself hoarse for him and the other ten players. Call me a happy clapper if you want, but I care first and foremost about the team. Personalities are always secondary to that, as they should be to all Wolves fans.

i have been one of these fans who has stuck by mick right up until last week.yes of course its frustrating and has been 4 months but still i stuck by.one thing has 2 be mentioned and even me being a mm fan the way freddy was treated against blackpool was a discrace 0-0 and he comes on 2 mins b4 the end the day after he announced he may have 2 leave [micks way of sayin im the boss], now i was sceptical as 2 y kyle was brought in but my dad told me it was a system mm played in the world cup 4 the last 10 mins putting quinn on which was efective but being honest kyle is usless.this system of putting bothroyd{who has great potential only hes 2 arrogant and big headed] on the left wing and keogh on the right is just ridiculos henry is a far better right back than centre mid and does not help out the back four he is very sloppy with passes, foley is lacking form.jarvis and kites have 2 b risked regardless of injury.seyi is under par, seb should not b played til after his court case.our defence prob is simple for years we had jo lescott who was quick alongside butler very strong partnership.breen is passed it yes he is a good defender but my god hes slow he cant handle quick over the top balls alongside jody who is equally as slow but is a great reader of the game and imo is our best defender but these lads cannot handle pace.collins is a joke.gray is not a defender.keogh should b dropped he is getting a touch of the bothroyds at the mo.d.edwards needs 2 take the finger out.2 b honest i think its not all mick the players have all come out and z mick is the best manager in the division.which i feel is true but playing ppl out of position is why that plank hoddle was sacked.i think mick should pick a different 11 or make alot of changes.jones and jarvis on the wings is a must thers no point in playing the winger system when we dont have wingers on the pitch.hope it gets sorted i feel we will hammer scunny as the players will be up 4 it after the warm down in cardiff [your not fit to wear the shirt etc]but it cud still end up the same old wolves and if that does happin then i feel we need a new man in asap.the players need TO TAKE THE FINGER OUT and stop whinging.one more thing breen coming out and saying the fans are right and so on and so forth, shut up ur 60% of the problem mate.hennesy has kept us out of relagation territory and player of the year is done and dusted already.tonight get behind the boys from start 2 finish then if its a shambels voice ur opinion.wanderers til we die

53 was probably right, Sam A would tick all the boxes given the right support, probably bring Sammy Lee along as well.

In the mean time we must support the team. If we don’t their confidence will sink even lower than it already is and we know what that means.

So we must get behind them if they are to have any chance. The wingers need to put their feelings behind them tonight and support them. Lets hope Freddie gets a start. He wants to do well, but doesn’t get the chance.

Why do Moxey and the remaining McCarthy supporters keep referring to us being in a bad run. We are in a bad season.
Even when the league table looked good in November the football we were playing was so boring and a fall down the table was always a possibility.
We have struggled to score goals for 18 months now so this is not a short term problem. and we only defend well if we play two defensive midfield players and then lose all creativity.
We have signed Kyle who has scored 17 goals in the last 8 years and now Bothroyd feels the need to explain why he has found goals hard to come by this season. Bothroyd has found goals hard to come by throughout his career. And when Andy Keogh finally got 4 goals in 5 games last month then he was swiftly moved to the wing.
So we have a young team - are they going to develop into good players when they are losing most weeks and their confidence is sapping visibly.
Te loyalty the club are showing to McCarthy is creditable in some respects but when the club are heading backwards in the way they have done this season is it really in the clubs best interests to stick with him. How bad does it have to get, and for how long?
