On Saturday March 1 and Sunday March 2, four of the top wheelchair rugby teams took part in the developing grassroots domestic Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) Coloplast League.
The event will be held at the Wolverhampton Rhinos ground St Peter School, Wolverhampton, with teams travelling from North London (Storm), South London (Lions) and Newcastle Wild Bulls to attend the event.
The league, which is sponsored by Coloplast Ltd and Sportsmatch (the government’s business incentive programme), aims to introduce new players to the game, to ensure competition for existing clubs and to help the formation of new clubs.
The league also operates as a social event for the players, all of whom have spinal injuries or upper limb impairment.
The league is now in its second year and currently has eight teams with the ultimate aim of having 12 teams by 2010.
Richard Allcroft, GBWR said: “The weekend was a great success, with the Rhinos looking strong on their home turf winning all their games, and the rest of the teams were fighting hard for their league position.
“We also hosted a successful referees’ clinic, which was well attended and run by one of our top International Swedish referees.
“We will be running more in the future with continuing support, and are always looking for people who are interested in being involved in the sport”
Mike Reynolds, Director of Sportsmatch commented: “This is a great scheme which is having a very real impact on the domestic wheelchair rugby game.
“Over 150 people are currently taking part in this initiative, which focuses on the team training and recruitment, all of which will be a major contributor to the growth of the sport over the next few years.
“We are delighted to sponsor this scheme.”
