Wolves calm as fan fury grows

wd2128001soccer-steve-mo.jpgWolves boss Mick McCarthy insists he does not fear for his Molineux future despite a rising tide of fury  from fans at the team’s ailing season.

McCarthy’s wounded side face bottom-club Scunthorpe at Molineux tomorrow night in a Championship match which some view as vital to the continuing welfare of the manager’s reign.

After Saturday’s limp exit from the FA Cup with a performance McCarthy today labelled as the worst of his tenure, Wolves must begin eating into the seven point gap separating them from the play-offs line to keep their season alive.

But it promises to be a challenging night for players and manager after Saturday’s Ninian Park misery concluded with angry fans barracking the players with chants of “You’re not fit to wear the shirt” during the “warm-down.”

McCarthy admits the campaign has reached crunch-point and spoke today of it being time to “put up or shut up.”

But within the club there was “calmness,” he said - a view supported by the Molineux hierarchy who remain intent on resisting the trigger-happy culture of the past.

McCarthy gave short shrift to one BBC radio reporter who tried to quiz him about his future after Saturday’s defeat but today was relaxed enough to talk about the growing criticism from the sidelines.

“I think it’s wrong and unfair they should get you after the game when emotions are running high,” he said.

“I prefer to do live TV and radio, I don’t have a problem with that, but when you have played badly and when you have lost some of you lot try to be smart and try to be clever.

“When it comes out in print, it looks different. But I actually said it with a twinkle in my eye and was having a bit of banter.

“We all know and understand what football managers are. But I do not find myself walking around wondering ‘what if’ about my position. I understand what is being said.

“But I have a great relationship with Steve (Morgan)  and Jez (Moxey). We are all trying to do the same thing, we are trying to get Wolves promoted, that’s what I am here for and within that I have their support.

“There’s a calmness within the club, from Steve downwards and I think we will find that calmness is important.

“If at the end it’s not working and you have to end it then so be it. I think you will find the people that count, certainly Steve in terms of business and Jez in terms of the football world, will not listen to outside influences.

“We’re having a tough time at the moment but I don’t suddenly think that I can’t do my job and I still think we can be in the shake up for the play offs.”

McCarthy will make big changes again tomorrow with recent signings Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Dave Edwards and George Elokobi eligible again and Matt Jarvis in with a chance of overcoming injury.

And he admitted: “We’ve got to win the game. We’ve spoken all season about being a team challenging for promotion but we’re out of it by a stretch and we’ve got to get back in there as soon as possible.

“There are 14 games left. Tomorrow’s game is not a foregone conclusion - there is no such thing in this division. Scunthorpe were two-up at Stoke on Friday.

“But coming on the back of our worst performance I’ve had since I’ve been here, it’s a far from foregone conclusion.

“ If you start looking at the gap it makes you feel worse.

“We just have to concentrate on winning this match andf go on from there.

“From July we’ve been talking about what we want to achieve and now it’s time to put up or shut up.”

I think MM is one game away from picking up Jobseekers allowance! Lose tomorrow against Scunthorpe and I reckon come the end of the week he will be out! Fed up with it all now! Haven’t felt this bad since the bad old days of the Bhatti brothers!

Maybe Mick should deal with some of the things that really bother us fans rather than keep trying to convince us all is well and we are still in with a shout. By this I mean the difficulties around team selection, the position regarding the absent younger players and Rosa, what is really happing regarding Eastwood, why did he not strengthen the defence?

I do not believe in hiring and firing managers on a short-term basis but Mick’s public statements cause him almost as much trouble as the team’s displays. B honest with us.

There is no doubt that the performances this season have been extremely disappointing and our deterioration since we went 3rd on December 1st has been remarkable . Indeed our form since then has been relegation form and it is only the points collected prior to then , and some of them very lucky , which has kept us away from the bottom 3 . Stoke won more matches in the last week than we have won since the Preston match on Dec.1st and that speaks for itself . However , this has all been said many times by a greta number of fellow fans but I would ask if anyone has a clue , and not mere speculation , about what has happened to Mark Davies . He is not on the injured list anymore , nor has he been for a time , but he doesn’t appear in the reserve squad either . Is he suspended by the club for any reason or is it just that his face does not fit with MM ?

Mick ask how us travelling fans felt after the game on Saturday. Well I can tell you there was no calmness amongst us, just frustration after watching the poorest performance of the season so far against an average championship team.

It will be interesting to see how the players react on Tuesday night after the barracking they received during the warm down, which was very vocal and made a few palyers turn their heads in dis-brief to what they were hearing! It is now a must win game for Mick and his future at the club.

There was no passion or pride in the team on Saturday and god only knows what formation they were meant to be playing as it was a complete shambles.

I have forked out £30 to go to Crystal Palace this coming Saturday. Am I mad to keep watching the rubbish currently being served up by the team? I must be!!!!

While the quality of play for the first 20 matches or so was generally average, we at least picked up a decent number of points. In my view, it started to slide when MM criticed the fans for the frustration shown in the last 20 mins of the home match v Barnsley in November when the team seemed intent to throw Barnsley a lifeline in a match where Wolves should have been well out of sight. Then, remember MM´s statement around the WBA match of Wolves having developed so much since we met WBA last season, and after the WBA-match, it has been largely misery with the play more often than not being substandard. While sympathising with MM´s statements in this article, so much has happened this season (Craddock´s loan, Keogh & Elliott “different class”, S Ward “best ever signing”, lack of goals, not rectifying our slow defence before the season or during the transfer window apart from the signing of Elokobi, playing Henry on the right wing at home v Palac,e to name but a few)that I have little belief in MM´s ability to turn things around. The crunch point is that we are where we are in the table having spent £ 7 million since last season, with a terrible number of goals and hardly any comfortable league wins all season (one at home, v. an inept Norwich team), and - remember - having had Hennessy playing very well for most of the matches (where would we have been with a mediocre goalie?). Then, we go out of the FA Cup with the most useless of performances, in a situation where only 2 of other remaining 7 teams in the competition are “unbeatable”. Are we supposed to sit silently and watch this misery continuing??

He is more suited to the job of a roadsweeper!
Is there any truth that Sir Jack put clauses in the contracts that guarantee McCarthy’s/Moxey’s jobs?If I was Steve Morgan & this was the case, I’d employ the services of a good solicitor to find me a loophole.Failing this, send them on “Gardening leave” & get IN suitable replacements ASAP.

We’ve not looked like a very good team for long chunks of the season. At the back we’re one speed and I think we lack a leader in the team. However, in some ways Wolves are the Newcastle of the Championship. The fans expectations are so high that I think the players do get intimidated. I also agree that although Mick does say some daft things he is a good manager. I’m bored with us dumping managers. Dave Jones was forced out through fan impatience. We have to hold firm and give him time. It’s easy to say when you don’t fork out your hard earned to watch them though…

I defied the ridiculous ticket situation on Saturday by standing in the Cardiff terracing. After 15 minutes I wished I had not bothered taking the risk or suffering the expense.
MM is losing it. No Jarvis - one of our most creative players - so we could have had a replacement in Jones, but we let him get cuptied. Craddock had not played in the first team for months, yet we played him with Breen - who had just been back for 1 game. George comes back in, but he has been poor this season and has travelled back from Africa. Then we had the prolific Bothroyd with Kyle up front. What a joke!
I am not saying he is definitely going to be our saviour but we need goals tomorrow. We must go with Ebanks-Blake, Keogh and Eastwood. Jones if Jarvis is not back and I would bring Little back, as Foley needs a breather.
The season is over if we don’t win tomorrow, get something from Palace and hopefully win at Preston. Avery tall order after the pathetic show on Saturday!

    Mick,

You must show all the players the MANU match again Arsenal last Saturday. The Manu players didn’t let the opposition settle into any sort of rhythem. They closed them down quickly all over the pitch, gave them no space, tackled aggresively but fairly. That is how to win a match week in week out. Give the opposition no time and as little space as possible. That is what made Arsenal so ordinary even though the have excellent players.

If we are to move forward, we have to take a bloody big leaf out of that book!

Make them watch how its done and then tell them to get out there and DO IT!

McCarthy said and I quote; “if at the end it’s not working and you have to end it then so be it.” Does that sound like someone who really cares passionately about his job. Well said 21 Brighton Wolf, MM is well past his sell by date, he had the good fortune last season to come into a club that was down on its luck and enjouyed brief success, got lucky with the Kitley signing and thats its. I am a big fan of MM,yes the team are playing very very poorly, yes he seems to have lost the plot. However in the context of the last season and half, all weve had is a very poor couple of months. This is also the same period we have been without probably our most influential players such as Kightly. MM had made some big errors with the forward line granted, and it appears very much a Eastwood V MM campaign within the crowd. Howver something must have gone on with him. All the other player seems to relate to MM there has to be something us fans are not aware of. Perhaps being honest with us may help ease the existing sitution( howver it may also affect his possible transfer fee when he goes)
Im as tagged of as much as anyone howver lets judge the guy after a full two seasons here. Most people will agree last year was by far the most enjoyable weve had in donkeys years.Mar Davies, Gleeson etc etc we can all bang on about, but theyre injured and have been for months. So get the fact before posting all the negative tosh.

Even if we DID make the play-offs I just could not see this team beating any of the top five in a ‘big pressure’ match. They do not seem to have the mental toughness required. We need (at the very least) a strong leader who can put his foot on the ball and say ‘calm down and let’s quieten the crowd a bit’.

MM’s shortcomings as a manager have been clearly exposed this season, lack of decisive tactical selections (particularly during a game), continually falling out with players while remaining loyal to journeymen players who will “put in a shift” and a newly found skill of spinning a succession of bad performances into a season of progression. My advice to McCarthy is to start taking responsibility for the mess that he has created and if he can’t do the honourable thing and move on. The same applies to Moxey - whose previous involvement resulting in the Cardiff fans being banned from Molineux - largely caused the Wolves fans to be treated like convicted criminals to get to the game on Saturday. There is a lot wrong with Wolves at the moment that could be made better by treating the fans with some respect rather than the contempt from the Club they currently receive.

It is no coincidence that the season seems to have taken a serious downturn since the exit of Taff Evans and the promotion of Terry Connor to asisstant. It’s win or bust tomorrow night for me. I have been patient with MM but that is now wearing thin. Too many games where we don’t create anything, too many games where we don’t score (I looked at our 32 league games the other day and FOURTEEN of them have ended without a goal scored by Wolves). Clearly, something is wrong with this team. The last 10 away games have yielded only 3 goals. Even Scunthorpe have scored more and they are bottom. The atmosphere is going to be dreadful tomorrow night, the longer we go without scoring. Something has got to give. I fear it will be MM’s job.

Also agree with the backroom posts, as with other managers before, as soon as conner gets to working with the first team results start to fall off…Yet again we buy players who are great in their first 2 or 3 games then we systematically coach all the good points out of them!! how many times over the last 5 years have we seen that? So what if we beat Scunthorpe tomorrow, they are the bottom of the league it means nothing, they are there for a reason. We will get behind the team, but it is so depressing. My early bird ticket renewal is staying in the drawer at the moment, can’t face the thought of next season.

Oooooooo Brighton Wolf. Very touchy. Ain’t been able to get your hands on your partner today. Your the muppet my friend. You don’t know anything about being a proper supporter. You are the type who puts the shirt in the wardrobe when the writing is on the wall. Not me. I’ll wear the badge win lose or draw. I don’t moan, i just get on with it. I’m proud and always will be being a Wolves fan. Thats why i support who we have got at the min. If he goes, he goes. I’ll support the next and the next. Grow up and be an adult.

25billyquietwolf - you start out by saying lets stop this incoherent blubbering - then go on to talk complete rubbish.
It has not been a couple of months of bad form we have only won 2 of our last 13 league games, the same as Scunthorpe. Even before that we were playing really boring football and scraping 1-0 wins against the likes of Burnley and Preston. And we have struggled to score goals for 18 months now, hardly a short term problem.
You say we have been missing some of our most influential players and then go on to list one player. Are we saying that its ok to rely on one player.
The people who are still supporting McCarthy can congratulate themselves on their loyalty, but they are struggling to come up with any logical arguments any more.

Apparantly i need to do this according to Brighton Wolf. MM is a muppet. He is the worst manager we have ever had. I hope he goes and takes his backroom staff with him. Plus his rubbish ex players. I shout all the time at the team and make my fellow fans uncomfortable. This must now make me a passionate supporter. One of a kind. Nobody can doubt me now. What a •••• you are Brighton lol. C’MON WOLVES !!

What’s the difference between Wolves and Bristol City? Bristol no money, small stadium, relatively small fan base - good manager? Ooops just spotted the problem!

  68. Woo's husband said:

Well said wifey. Regardless of back room rivalries, Mick should be big enough to play his best team and that has got to include one Mr Eastwood. Give him 90 mins every game to the end and he will score goals.

  69. wolfie2468 said:

i’ll post a serious comment now and stop bein stupid. I agree with most of the above. Its going to be so hard for MM to keep his job if we don’t turn the corner right now. It has been a mess i’m not denying that. It is a shame tho after last seasons journey. What a year it was. People forget that tho. Results do the talking and yes they have not been good enough. Is it all the manager tho when we do make silly silly mistakes like we have. They probably never do them in training. Lose or draw tomorrow then yes i think MM will go. UP THE WOLVES !

If Mick leaves, and he hopefully does sooner rather than later, it would probably leave us with one of the fololowing candidates:

    Ian Dowie
    Steve McClaren
    Chris Coleman
    Paul Ince
    Sam Allardyce

I could find candidates that I would prefer more than those, but I think those are the ones we would be left with.

When competitive football resumed in England in 1946/47, the English International Stan Cullis played just one more season for Wolves in which the club once again narrowly missed out on a first league title. He then announced his retirement due to injury and was appointed assistant to manager Ted Vizard, after having made 171 appearances in total for the club.

In June 1948, aged just 31, Cullis became manager of Wolves and presided over the most successful era in the club’s history.

For Cullis, read Ince. He is in the same mould and has proven he can manage as well as coach and play. Let’s start having some fun again! I am fed up of all this misery!

    Hi Sue D’Nimm ( 59 ) ,

Thanks for trying and I presume that you are aware of the reasons that I fail to understand . In my opinion MD is the best player to come from the academy since Robbie Keane and , although he has been injured , it seems starnge that he hasn’t had a first team start for almost 2 seasons . This time also coincides with MM being the manager and I feel that there must be something between the two of them but may well be totally wrong . It is strange that most of our young players have been shipped out on loan without ever being given a chance and I also feel that this fact MUST have had something to do with Chris Evans leaving . I can only continue to try and find the reason for what is behind many of the strange decisisons that come out of the club .

you must be watching a different wolves team to the rest of us then if you think we have had a poor couple of months unless your maths is poor and you think a couple is 4?

we have only performed in one half of a few matches this season, mick did well last season, but he has been given a lot of funds to strengthen the team but i fail to see where this has been improved from last season! foley is my exception but his performances have dipped the last two months.

its has to be down to tactics, team selection and coaching - only one man responsible for that… mick!!. yes we miss kites but wolves are a team we should not be reliant on one player!

we are where we are because that is how good our team is under the present regime…. mid table and no better

We believe that some of the key issues of this seasons demise are somewhere amongst this little lot:

    1) the exit of McIndoe - although some will say he wanted to go - do we really know why - because before the season started Wolves would appear to be a better bet than Bristol City or is there more to it - anyone know anything out there?

2)Our list of injuries - we can remember Spurs had similar “casualty list” until George Graham became Manager and sorted out the real wounded from the “actors” or if genuine injuries , Is it down to the lack of quality in the medical and fitness teams, anyone any ideas/ info?

    3) Tactics or serious lack of tactics - Is this down to MM or is it down to TC or formerly Taff Evans anyone have a clue?

4)Why has the centre half positions been so neglected, when last season showed that we seriously need centre halfs with some pace as Breen and Craddock are not getting any younger and seriously lack pace

    5) MM stated that we had filled our quota of strikers and gave this as a reason for not going back in for a certain Ishmael Miller from Man City (before he went in for SEB and then Kyle)
MM stated that acquiring Freddie had filled his quota for strikers?

Lets see I Miller Vs K Kyle - No contest - any thoughts?

There are definately many more that we’ve missed but these will do for starters, especially the centre halfs - Interested to know anyones thoughts?

    UP THE WOLVES!

Now move on a season mighty muppet has spent 7 million on his own players along with that donkey kyle and look what happens,, I’m sorry but we have not had one game this season when you can say “Wow what a game that was I really enjoyed that”…..

If we don’t win at home tonight against arguably the weakest team in the league then MM has to go its as simple as that if not then there is only one way in which we are heading and that’s down to league one.
The fans have had enough of all the excuses under the sun and if the board are happy with the very mediocre performances we have dished up of late then maybe its time they packed their bags as well as they are obviously more interested in their own livelihood rather than the WWFC.

I’m not a happy clapper either like some of u think. I just think that shouting abuse etc is not on. I just support who is at the club as we are Wolves together. It doesn’t mean i’m happy but we are all in it. I pay money for my s.ticket like most of u but does me not being all hostile toward the situation make me a bad fan ? Surely not. People saying he should be sacked are insane. Wolves should have been fighting for relegation last season.

Wolves massively overachieved, a point which cannot be emphasised enough. Wolves overachieved on a scale of epic proportions.

This year, so called “fans” should stop and think about where the team was before MM came in. He’s building a team, in football there are no quick fixes. A manager needs at least 5 years. Not even the worlds best with tons of money can do it all in 18 months.

So to all you so called fans, SHUT THE HELL UP AND BACK THE TEAM, OTHERWISE, BACK OFF! AND DONT COME TO GAMES.
