Graham Taylor today backed under-fire Wolves boss Mick McCarthy to be given three years in the job.
McCarthy has been criticised by fans anxious at the club’s current run of two wins in 11 league games.
Taylor was sacked after just 18 months in the Molineux hotseat – the same time as McCarthy has had.
But the former England and Villa boss believes the board and fans should be more patient with McCarthy.

“I think all managers should get at least three years in the job – I’d prefer five but I think that’s rare these days,” said Taylor.
“After three years, a manager can’t say ‘it’s not my team’. And you can see the direction the club is heading.
“Now Mick is finding the same sort of pressures at around the same time I did.”
Taylor however believes owner Steve Morgan may eventually want to appoint his own man.
“Mick is working for Steve Morgan, who I don’t know. But the only possible difficulty there is that Mick was not Morgan’s appointment,” he said.
“I realise this is the Black Country and everything is black and white with the fans. If the team aren’t winning, they’ll let you know they’re not happy.
“But I’d say to the Wolves supporters: ‘Where was the club 18 months ago when Mick took over?’
“They hadn’t been doing well but Mick took Wolves to the play-offs. Come on fellas, I think you need to look at that.
“Maybe they got there too early. Mick’s an honest man, he’s not going to give you any rubbish and he tells it like it is.”
Taylor added: “Wolves still have a chance of the play-offs. The older fans remember the Cullis era and tell their children and grandchildren about it, that’s a lot to live up to.”
McCarthy says he can cope with the pressure, but revealed some of his players may struggle with the expectations.
Taylor says he had the same problem, adding: “Some players, when I was manager, couldn’t cope with those pressures. A lot of things went on behind the scenes and I was sacked by Jonathan Hayward when I’d have liked Sir Jack to have been more involved.”

we have to ask ourselves who would we get instead i dont want dowie thats for sure and i cant think of anyone else right now who would get me excitied. dont get me wrong at no point did i want or want now mccarthy he has never really done it on any stage for a long period of time. he has short periods where it does click like us last season but his second season in charge has been like most of his second seasons in charge at other clubs a lack of new ideas and the ability to change.
in a strange way i wouldn’t mind taylor back i all ways thought he wasn’t given long enough and was really brought down by internal politics.

Sorry Graham should you read this but saying “Mick’s an honest man, he’s not going to give you any rubbish and he tells it like it is.” is… untrue!
Every week he contradicts his previous statements by saying the exact opposite. His latest is “I don’t look to see how many points we are from the play-offs” yet just before Christmas he was telling everyone that’s exactly what he did!He changes his tune to suit the daily situation without admitting to his failings. As a consequence, many of us do not believe a word he says any longer!
What YOU say about Wolves fans seeing everything black & white IS true, we DO speak the truth and sometimes it hurts doesn’t it?

McCarthy will be the end of wolves, with players like eastwood wanting to leave because mick is too stubborn to do wat the fans want wolves will drop down the table.

If you look at the starting 11 every player has been brought in by mick apart from hennessey, craddock and edwards. So he’s bought these players in and it’s his team.
MM is too stubborn and to full of himself to realise when he’s in the wrong and not capable of the doing the job.
Get rid of him morgan and bring in your own man!

I am not sitting on the fence here but I am not convinced sacking MM will make a scrap of difference as the problems at Wolves are too deepseated.Lets be honest we have had some decent managers over the years and none of them (apart from D Jones for half a season) have done any good. That cannot be a coincidence. Everywhere you look there are problems. The first team is crap ,no youngsters challenging for first team places, the stadium looking tired and needing refurbishment,a CEO who the fans by and large hate ,and an owner who I am not sure has his heart in the club.

This is NOT the end of the world. Let these men get on with their jobs and hopefully things will turn in our favour. When the summer comes, lets see where we are then. Nice bloke that Graham Taylor and did a good job for Watford. Didn’t do quite so well when managing teams with expectations of success like England, Villa and Wolves.
I agree that MM did a good job in the short term. But Taylor also asks the question where were Wolves when MM took over. Answer is looking more like a relegation team than a promotion one.
Now though we have 2 wins from 13 games the same as Scunthorpe and one less than Colchester! Wow thats progress.
Also we can’t score goals and we are boring to watch and we are supposed to see a drab goalless draw at Blackpool as progress.
I am sure MM is in the same union as Taylor and its nice to see him being supportive but I am afraid you have it wrong and Wolves need to change before the fears of 18 months ago come to reality.

You mentioned about MICK being stubborn well i think every1 agrees and this is a quote from Freddie Eastwood.
“When I first arrived I was scoring but he said I wasn’t working hard enough so he took me out of the side,” he said.
“Then when I was working hard enough I wasn’t scoring. I’m in and out of the side, not used to it and not happy.”
For gods sake you idiot Mick the guy wants to bloody play for us unlike the others who cant be arsed and are just happy to pick up their massive wage packets!!!!!!
PLEASE MICK EITHER MORGAN SACKS YOU OR GO NOW TAKE YOUR BACKROOM WITH YOU AND THE FAT CONTROLLER WITH YOU.
A GOOD 90% OF THE FANS DONT WANT ANY OF YOU HERE ANYMORE. SHEFF UTD HAVE MOVED ROBBO SO WHY ARE WE TOO SCARED TO CHANGE THINGS??????

I really do despair reading the comments to this article. Graham speaks a lot of sense, and the frankly childish and idiotic comments such as No.3 are symptomatic of the problems we face as a club. How can we expect the club to progress when at the first sign of a dip in form comments such as ‘ thick mick ‘ start appearing. Whilst performances and our league position are very disapointing, sacking Mick now would be a huge mistake. Steve Morgan has, in my opinion, more sense than that. Lets judge at the end of the season, and in the meantime lets get behind the team!!!!

If only this season was last season and last seaason was this, McCarthy would be being supported by all. However because he showed what he can do last season and he has now strengthend, he has gone backwards, so why can he reach the play-offs in a season when he bearly had time to say hello and then once he puts his mark on the team it all goes wrong. That seems crazy to me!

I rated Graham Taylor. Given longer he’d have got us up for sure. He was sacked long before there was any real discontent in the crowd, & he got us to the play-offs with a very good side. We took a 2-1 lead to Bolton, which should have been 5-1, & then we were robbed at Bolton. John McGinley. Need I say more. I’m still not over it. If MM could build a side half as good i’d be very happy.

Blowing my own Trumpet, but I mentioned earlier in the season Wolves should have gone for Warnock & was lambasted left, right & centre.
His Crystal Palace side are above us now & with 7 of their remaining games at home (Us included),I’m quite sure I was right.
With Wolves unfortunatly looking like missing out again, I’d like to see “Mad Dog” Martin Allen, Mickey Adams or Ian Dowie applying for Mick’s job when the inevitable happens & he is relieved of his duties.
In my heart of heart,I honestly think the play offs are getting out of Wolves reach, but would love to be proved wrong.

I despair sometimes at our so called supporters. I’m embarrassed reading some of those comments.
If GT had had his 3 years in charge, he would have got us promoted - and those are the thoughts of not only sensible Wolves fans but also most of the players from that time, and he speaks sense now.
We are all frustrated at our current league form and position, but some have very short memories. When MM took over we were relegation fodder, hardy enough senior players to put out a team, apathy surrounded the whole club.
MM deserves at least to see the season out and to be given the chance to turn it around - so why don’t we get behind the team and put these anti-McCarthy feelings to one side for the benefit of everyone associated withe this club of ours!
If I remember correctly that is just what MM said when he took over the club give me 3 years. Correct me if I am wrong but is this not his second year but because the team last season did extremely well, expectations were on a high for this season including MM.
I am just as frustrated as every other fan but Graham is right in my opinion. I know that some of the fans will think I have lost my marbles as well but I would rather go into the Premiership with experience and stay there than go in as we are at the moment not being able to score goals.
What happened to Dave Jones when we came back down and none of you fans wanted him sacked because he got us up but we came back down and regardless of whether we spent any money or not at that time, the team we had then was experienced enough to stay up but they did not.
Give him a chance you were all singing his praises last season.

Wolves fans are remarkably fickle, always have been, always will be. McCarthy should not be sacked, give the man a chance, please! Taylor’s right - McCarthy has pulled us out of the mire that we were in before he joined, and this should be remembered. It’s clear he is currently having a bad patch of form, but sacking him will be no solution. Can anyone think of a better replacement who would come to Wolves? I certainly can’t.
Let me for one moment not criticise McCarthy and I have been a critic and look at things this way. A few days ago I received my early bird package. Now then what did I think? It was I really didn’t want to renew because the thought of another season of decisions being made which I neither understand or agree with was going to happen. And with dear old Jez apparently backing this nonsense where am I to go from here? So even if I don’t criticise there is still a problem for me and I have been watching Wolves since 1960 so I do know a thing or two about the club.
And No.20 Taxi for McCarthy what planet are you on. Why are you paying more than us season ticket holders. Well you told us, it was because you don’t have a season ticket. So why not get one and save money. Isn’t there an interest free credit card loan for people if they don’t have the funds. No offence intended but what you said just doesn’t make sense.

GT could have achieved more at Wolves if he was given full backing by the board
People have short memories as GT was responsible for the youth system being put into place and also pursuading the likes of a youthful Robbie Keane to choose Wolves over Nottingham Forest
GT could have done the same for Wolves as he did for Watford if he had been allowed to do the job properly - and he was asked to come back to Wolves to do an unpaid role by SJH - but had other commitments (Director of Football)
Wolves could have done with someone like him to help whoever is the manager to blend the youth and first team - so we get the best of the home grown being used and not discarded as soon as some money is available

Graham Taylor never fielded a team as bad as what we are now seeing.
We have become the Ossie Osborne of the Championship.
Dysfunctional is the only way to describe what we are witnessing. One minute MM is going for an all-out attack and ready to take chances. Next minute a 0-0 draw against lowly opposition is an achievement. What next?
Most of us are not fools, we can all see with our own eyes what has happened. Both Moxey and McCarthy are hanging on by the skin of their teeth, but they both know that they are loosers and now it has caught up with them.
I don’t believe that Mr Morgan will allow M&M to waste any more of his money on 1 division level players. The farce will end soon.

33. joe: “…Manchester united didnt become a greta team over night they had stability…” correct, and I agree totally with the concept, however McCarthy is no Ferguson. Why can people never see this, Ferguson is good at what he does so give him ten years and he will bring you silverware. Just keeping a manager for stability is not going to help you unless you have one who is good at what he does. And yes sacking them every five minutes doesn’t help either, it is a balance if they are bad sack them if they are good keep them, Ferguson has only been in post for so long because he is good, do not think for one moment Manchester would have thought twice about getting shot of him had they have been in the state we are currently in. But McCarthy is not the only problem, over the last few years we have seen quite a few problems that resemble today’s, in one form or another, the only constant to these is the backroom. We cannot defend or take set pieces, score penalties, pass forward, defend, get players fit, avoid further injury to players on the road to fitness. These have all been problems long before this current manager and players were installed, but O’Connor and Mimms alike have not changed have they. Moxey, well again people don’t seem to get it, he doesn’t wipe his nose unless told to, he is a mouth piece for whom ever runs the club. The PR is shocking at wolves, some of the stories they put in the press are so badly timed and just fuel the fire, or show them as clueless, this is Moxey’s fault. The official website is almost an insult, generic rubbish that tells nothing. Can Morgan get rid of them, I seem to remember he could not for one year due to a clause in the handover terms, perhaps he is lining up replacements? Look at it from a business point of view, his product is not good, his assets are loosing value (Eastwood is no worth his transfer fee anymore), his management has upset his consumers, you don’t get rich in business by allowing this sort of thing to go on, he knows this, that is why I really believe his lack of action is due to a clause in the take over.
If MM was making progress or showing any signs of turning it around then he would get the full support of most if not all of the Wolves fans - however, he is doing neither of these and instead just shows a stubborn streak to stick with tactics that are not working, continuing to play players out of position when other players more siuted to those positions sit in the reserves and constantly berates ‘his’ players in public!!
So wolves 2468 and all the others with rose coloured spectacles - wake up and smell the coffee - we are heading back to where we were when McCarthy took over - relegation prospects or at least the laughing stock of the midlands and the championship!
2 years ago we did not look like getting promoted and now we do not look like we will get promoted so where’s the progress???
I too think that GT was sacked too soon because (just like some of our reserves and fringe 1st team players) he was not given a fair crack of the whip but this does not apply to McCarthy who is the master of his own demise by employing tactics and management techniques that are not working and point blank refusing to change them!

No matter what people’s opinions are on the subject, Mick WILL NOT be sacked.
Poxey Moxey has already come out and said that he backs him 100%. I personally wish Mick would stop the dodgy tactics and play the man we know should be first team no matter what.
Also Morgan needs to voice his opinion a little more often, I’m not suggesting he interferes quite as much as Milan Mandaric does but I get the feeling Wolves is just a play thing to Him. He couldn’t buy Liverpool so he gets his supposed 2nd favourite team.
Please! Come on Mick, stop the stubborn Yorkshire-man act, it aint washing and yes we are fickle but we should be doing better in the league and even then all we want is 100% from the lads.
In this league it is not necessarily quality that gets you up (though it sure does help), but a good run and commitment from a team, look at Wigan or Reading, and Sunderland last season. It’s in the Prem you need to start spending wisely even though those three teams are now struggling.
Come on people, what ever you say about Mick (me included), he can get team(s) promoted in this league.
With a possible 42 points to be collected from now on, promotion isn’t impossible, so I think the best thing we can do is to bite our lips with the negative comments. And try and encourage the lads a little more, as they are right when they say shouting out insults helps nobody.
UP THE WOLVES, COME ON MICK!

In answer to Mark Perry (50): I, for one, am still here.
Part of the problem at our club is the fans. There can be no escaping this. I’ve said this before but Turner, Taylor, McGhee, Lee, Jones and Hoddle can’t all be bad managers. And not all of their signings can have been bad players. The board has made mistakes in the past by raising expectations to unreasonable heights (remember Jonathan Hayward’s “Put your mortgage on Wolves to go up this year..”?) but the lack of patience amongst fans continually results in shouts for the manager’s head and a lack of continuity. We can’t keep repeating the mistakes of the past. Last year, precisely because expectations were so low, we got behind the manager and the team and over-performed. We even got stuffed 6-0 at home and still applauded the team off the pitch. And against all odds we reached the play offs. Doesn’t this teach us anything?
I don’t think that MM doesn’t know his best team - I just think he hasn’t been able to put it out too often (if at all). With Jarvis and Kightly flying down the flanks we’d be a side transformed. No question. When has Mick been able to do this? I do think he can be criticised for not sticking with a forward line for long enough for some kind of understanding to form. I do think that playing Craddock and Breen together on Saturday was a huge mistake - and one, given their lack of match practice, that could have been foreseen. But despite this and the poor season that we’ve had, yes, in Mick I trust. Don’t be entirely swayed by what you read on this messageboard: empty vessels make most noise.
And for those of you who were claiming the other day that Wolves fans didn’t want Dave Jones out - get real and take some responsibility. I remember the chants well enough.
It’s true we all have expectations much higher than we should for a small club, these days. But you can’t blame Wolves fans for that, even if they are unrealisticly high. I read a lot of disatisfaction on these pages and i have to say I was excited with the prospect of signing Freddy E. So what’s the problem Mick? How could you start the game on saturday with Bothroyd & Kyle when Bothroyd wasn’t even on the bench last week. Where is the logic behind this managers actions? I’m no football manager myself but it doesn’t take an expert to see failings in a system that doesn’t work. Failings that are no longer a rare thing. if the players are going into a game with no idea about what they’re supposed to do, it’s obvious in the first place they are lacking in good leadership, secondly belief in themselves is clearly not there and this is also down to the management side of things, Arrogance is Micks achilies, so actually is lack of success. really he got sunderland promoted. Big deal. do we want to come back down under Mick as quick as they did. But let’s go lightly for a bit longer. just who is there out in the unemployed managers paddock that we’d really like to see here?
