Mick McCarthy today hailed Wolves’ battling draw at Blackpool as “progress” and insisted: “I’m not bothered where we are in the league until the end of April”.
The Molineux chief was happy with a point from a hard-fought contest at Bloomfield Road even though results elsewhere meant his side slipped further from the play-off places.
McCarthy says he doesn’t want that fact to cloud his side’s first clean sheet since the win at Scunthorpe in January – and an improved display.
“Absolutely it’s progress – we’ve been beaten twice in the last two games, so it is an improvement,” he said.
“It’s a clean sheet and we needed that after conceding the goals that we have done.
“There will be some arguing we should come here and win, but I don’t subscribe to that because Blackpool are a decent side.
“There have been a few chances for both sides but at the end of the day I’ll take the goalless draw and the point.”
The result left Wolves in 12th place and four points behind sixth place – something that McCarthy thinks is irrelevant at the moment.
“I’m not bothered at the moment. It will matter at the end of April and the beginning of May – let’s see where we are then,” he said.
“I get a little bit tired of everybody reminding me we’re two points, three points or five points away. At the moment, that is a good point for us. Bearing in mind we’ve just conceded seven goals in two games, it was good to stop the rot.”
McCarthy praised the returning Gary Breen, who was man of the match for his performance in defence.
The skipper was back after four months out with injury – and McCarthy said critics should take their injury list into account.
“Perhaps one or two that have been a little bit cutting with their comments might understand that we’ve had Jody Craddock, Neill Collins and Gary Breen all missing.”

How many games are left? how close is the league? a good run now would see us into the play offs. Since promotion in 88/89, in those 18 completed seasons, including the one when we were the prem, there has been a remarkably tight range (70-76 points)in terms of points that the side finishing 6th has achieved to claim the last playoff spot.
On three occasions, the side finishing 6th were on 76 points (Leicester in 92/93 and Notlob twice pipping us – in 1998/9 and 1999/2000). The lowest tally for a side in 6th place – in 1991 - was Brighton on 70 points.
On average, over the last 18 seasons, a side has finished on 73.56, rounded up to 74 points, to get the last playoff spot. However, on three occasions, this still would not have been enough (us in 99/00, Burnley in 01/02 and Preston last year).
From our current position, we would need 30 points in the remaining 14 games at an average of 2.14 points per game based on the average points tally. We would still need 26 points (at an average of 1.86 per game) should the lowest points in 19 years be equalled.
Taking the side that finished in 7th and adding a point (in other words, what was required rather than what was achieved to get 6th spot), the range is 68 to 75, and the average was 71.83, rounding up to 72 points.
From our current position, this would require exactly 2 points a game to reach the average. The lowest ever required was 68 points in 2005/6, when we finished 7th on 67 points. We would still need 24 points, at an average of 1.71 points a game in the lowest ever outcome in 19 years.
In the last two seasons, we have claimed exactly 26 points in the final 14 games. In our promotion season, we got 25 points.
So, if we match those achievements, we might, just might, scrape a playoff spot based on evidence since 1989/1990.
Conclusion: Swansea here were come - statistically speaking.

I know I sound like I’ve suddenly changed my tune, but last night was NOT an acceptable performance, it’s all well and good saying we’re moving forward, but we’re not necessarily looking for just a ‘battling performance’ we need GOALS! You would think MM would just admit he’s wrong (as with Craddock) and play Eastwood. Sort it out Mick, or I’de give you till after the Cardiff match to start packing.

I am sick of this cult worship for Freddie Eastwood. Okay, so we are all upset at the fact that we haven’t won every game this season, not flying the league and don’t agree with all of the manager’s decisions. April / May IS when it matters.
Let’s take a look at how badly King Freddy has been treated, and how much of a proven goalscorer he is shall we? In the CCC this season he has started 10 games, had 13 substitute appearances, (most of which he had between 20 and 45 minutes on the pitch) and has scored 3 goals. In his previous season in the Championship he started 41 games, had one substitute appearance, and had 11 goals, 5 of which were penalties. That is his PROVEN ability at Championship level? Below that, he has done well, and this was the reason we bought him. He played 34 games in each of his two seasons for Southend in lower leagues, scoring 23 and 21 goals in those seasons. In the Conference he scored 28 goals in 41 games.
As for him not being given a fair crack of the whip, let’s see what games and goals other strikers have. I have not included Ward, who has played as a left winger this season. Also left out are Ebanks-Blake and Kyle, as they are recent additions.(Again from the official Wolves website.)
Bothroyd 13 starts, 9 sub appearances, 3 goals. (No hero worship.)
Elliott 14 starts, (two of these on the wing) 8 sub appearances, 4 goals. (No hero worship, despite a better goals tally.)
Keogh 23 starts, 8 sub appearances 4 goals. (some like him, but no hero worship.)(Admitedly, more games to get his 4 goals.)
As stated previously, FE is not a proven goalscorer at this level. He has played more or less the same games as all but Keogh in the striker’s role, so has he been mistreated? (Or has he under-performed?)

Sorry “JohnWolf” no.7, but I get exasperated abour people like you who seem to think anyone who dares to criticise the performance of their team are somehow doing something wrong. We all put our heart and soul iunto this club and have every right to get frustrated when things are as bad as they are.
As for the point that I won’t care about the table until April, the only slight problem with that is that we are losing points so fast compared to others that by then we will be way out of the picture.
Also what happened to the “we are looking at the top 2″ quote form the start of the season; MM is now trying to paint another attempt at sixth place as a sucess. Compare our squad and resources to teams like Bristol City and Stoke added to years of failure and if you’re happy with that then good luck to you, I’m not!

To be honest a point away at blackpool is a good result. Look at our team and at the end of the day were just an average championship team who are simply not good enough to get in the top six.
When you have a clueless manager who is playing kyle up front when he couldn’t get in coventry 1st team. Mark Davies is fit again i believe and we never see anything of him.Freddy was in the in form striker at the start of the season but he gets dropped cos he doesn’t put a shift in.
Stephen ward is played majority of the season ahead of jarvis.
Manager says we’ve been missing collins(captain clumsy) at the back.The bloke has not got a clue and i’ve never been so infuriated by a wolves manager as much as i am under MM.

The thing about Eastwood is that when he’s on the pitch he looks like he wants to score and does everything possible to score. You must admit there is a frustration for much of this season that our players are shot shy. This has changed since SEB & D.Edwards have arrived plus the intorduction of Jarvis but there’s still a chance that if they shoot too much, and possibly sco then they might find themselves on the bench. I like McCarthy and think he’s a decent bloke, plus will continue to give him my support but patience is wearing thin. Keough right mid..No. Gray plays well and he’s dropped…No. Ward continues to bumble along & plays…No.
As I’ve said before, he should get his system/formation right and give it a chance instead of continual change..he’s become the Benitez of the CCC.

I tried to be supportive of this man after what he did last season until now.

Listen mate before Albion come, I would say that we need to beat Scunthorpe, Colchester and Southampton and not lose at Palace. A very tall order, but could accrue us another 10 points, to take us onto 54 points. It then leaves 10 games, which we probably need to win 7 of them. A very tall order the way we are playing.
What are you mentioning Neill Collins for? He has been awful. Either Little, Mulgrew or Lee Collins could have done better than this clown.
I would also suggest that Kyle cannot be first choice and play Jones if you need another wide man to compliment Jarvis.
Stop covering your mistakes and show some of the spirit from last year. Or be on your way!

Wolves are building a club slowly without splashing the cash, and that isnt going to change. No more Big Time Charlies or players in their twilight years. Get used to this, as once you have hounded Mick out the policy isn’t going to change. So either support the club, or clear off.

Let me take comment 1 first - and no disrepect to Blackpool here but we are apparently aiming for promotion and after the dropped points over the period October to January, a draw is hardly going to enhance our prospects, is it?
As for comment 2 - so what, isn’t that why we have a big squad? For your information, a squad is for replacing injured, suspended or ill players etc and if that squad is good enough, a reserve player should slot in with little or no disruption to the team. IF you are saying that is not the case, then you only have yourself to blame as they are nearly all your own players, YOU brought them in and therefore YOU must take the blame if they cannot do the job they need to do when asked!
Supporters were over the moon at last seasons achievement and it was not beyond reason to expect a similar showing this time around even a real push for automatic promotion but what has happened? - The season has been littered with dropped points to teams who even before the season had started were going to struggle, tactical decisions have been deployed which made no sense to anyone but you and players have been played out of their normal positions which have been nothing short of comical and then you and the club plead for “patience” and “give us time”, surely a ploy meant to pacify the frustrated fans for having to put with the lack lustre performances of YOUR team!
Steve Morgan it seems may be happy with your management but the fans certainly are not! Fans pay good money to be entertained but your style of management is poor and negative at best, your attempts at PR are almost as bad and now your players are getting in on the act too! As for the excuses which now follow every game well… they are just laughable! Managers on average are given 18 months to shape up but you are lucky it would seem, Morgan appears be giving you until May before he analyses the season but he will reach the same conclusion many have already reached - you must go! So book yourself a nice long holiday in the sun and forget all about football. While you are getting a nice tan, the club can appoint a new manager with tactical nous, awareness, can adapt to changing situations, will give reserve players a decent spell of games to acclimatize and play players in form and not just his favourites! Thanks for everything Mick, close the door on your way out - but you won’t be missed!

UBWolf, I agree with most of what you say, apart from some of the things you say about Eastwood. He doesn’t do everything possible to score. He sits too deep, he doesn’t chase most of the time, he doesn’t ever put his defender under pressure when we lose the ball, and he doesn’t always look like scoring. He tends to pick up the ball deep, and tries to run at defenders. Once he gets to 20-25 yards out he tries a shot. Defenders at this level, apart from some of ours, can suss that out, and either take the ball off him, or get in the way of the shot. In my mind there is always too much standing around with hands on hips from him. I was delighted when we signed him, but would not think it the end of the world if he left in the summer. His record at this level is below par.
Sure, McCarthy has his faults, and has to shoulder some of the blame. I still think though that had Breen, Craddock and, certainly, Kightly, not gone down with long-term injuries we would be in a much better position in the league, and may be in with a shot of the automatic promotion spots. As we are now, we may scrape the play-offs if these players come back quickly, but will not go up this season. That may not be a bad thing, as we are still a season away from seeing the best of our younger players. I don’t want to do a Derby, and bounce straight back down in an embarassing way. When we go up I want to stay up.

Freddy been treated badly then he score on is debut for Scotland we was scoring at wolves and then he come back to wolves he went straight into starting line up for wolves and carried on and scored eg a striker need games and need the full 90 mins and needs the backing of is manger behind him that’s why scored so many goals at southend he was playing weekly and had the backing of the manger there end day then he played Freddy is season he never had right striking partnership with him either which why can see what fans are saying if put Blake and Freddy together for 45 mins they be hard to deal with because both youth and both have pace defences in is league will struggle to deal with both of them end point is there nothing lose trying them out because proves he need new striking partnership after can’t score against Blackpool new team first season in is league end day what can mm lose by trying and I think it could be massive turning point

He has no faith in his midfield so the tact now is HUFF from the defence, see the ball sail over the midfield, to KK who will win the knock downs and hope upon hope the runs from SEB, AK etc will end up with one of them getting onto the knock downs. People will harp on that Liverpool have done that tactic with Crouch and dare I say it with england too, but hey when u have the calibre of players like rooney, gerrard or lamps running onto them then you will see sense to the system. I personally as I wont use the “we” word, personally think we are going backwards, the team is disjointed, there has been something brewing with Mental Micky and the players since the summer. McIndoe leaves…. and look how well Bristol City are going. The long tracking of Billy Sharp was a waste of time didnt help so Mental Micky bought Freddie. Now he has had a bust up with him. Sends Craddock to Stoke thinks Ward and Collins will do a job. Stokes results picks up and then he brings him back. Persistancy with Stephen Ward was a joke, Elliott ok the booing maybe harsh but its just one thing after another…

And this after having spent £ 7 mill or whatever in order to improve last season`s fifth place. Tell you what mate: The number of goals scored and the lack of COMFORTABLE home wins (one against an inept Norwich-team) so far this season, is nothing less than scandalous, given the rhetoric before the season started and the investments made in the team. You may think you know what you are doing, but, really, it is just hit and hope, isn´t it?

I don’t hero-worship Eastwood. I don’t hero-worship any player. Mother Theresa and Nelson Mandela are heroes - not footballers (although Bully comes close!)
However, on Eastwood, fans judge on what the manager says. We waited all summer long for the “pivotal signing.” Every striker was linked to Wolves and at one time or another we made enquiries about or bids for Lafferty, Fryatt and Sharp. When we signed Eastwood, MM said he was the key signing, the one he really wanted, the one to build his team around. Presumably he told Eastwood the same thing! His treatment of him either says he was lying and wanted to cover up failures to bring in others or he is admitting a monumental misjudgment which he recognised within weeks!
Of course, players are bought on reputation and many fail to live up to expectations but don’t have this nonsense of sitting him on the bench for 90 minutes and playing a free transfer, unsubtle striker ahead of him unless you freely admit that you’ve cocked up. If you don’t want to play him, let the guy go on loan somewhere and rebuild his confidence. He may not be the Messiah you thought he’d be but don’t then turn round and treat him like a pantomime extra because you’re too proud to admit you got it wrong!
Oh and while I’m ranting, I said on Monday that MM talks rubbish and this latest interview is the icing on the cake! Again on his own say-so in August, we should be aiming for the top 2. Now scraping into the play-offs is good enough apparently. I came across the final table for 2004/05 the other day when his Sunderland and Wigan went up automatically. If we won every game from now until the end of the season, we would have less points than both of them managed in that season. We had 66 points and finished well adrift of the 73 needed for the play-offs….a total we will probably repeat this season!

I’m sitting on the fence for now. We defo missing Kights and have been missing our first choice defenders but its true that this dross cannot continue. I agree eastwood and ebanks look to be our best front line and it puzzles me why McCarthy hasnt given them a proper run as of yet. But, purely based on last seasons restoration of pride by MM almost single handedly, I will give him the benefit of the doubt until the end of the season. If we dont get PROMOTION though, which is looking increasingly likely, I will join the screaming hoard baying for his blood and calling for the return of the Guvernor!

What a bunch of chumps, how easy is it to pin the blame on a manager. The fact is Newcastle fans have constantly undermined their managers for years with a massive expectation that they have. And look where they are, I mean do you see what pandering to the load mouth fans results in, the biggest joke in football returning to manage.

The fact is, we did well last season cos nobody expected us to. Just look at the stats though, we were the flukiest side in the play-offs, we had some shocking results, but we never lost faith.

I will not be renewing my season ticket for the first time in 18 years until this Yorkshire muppett is back down a mine and no longer in football.
I simply cannot take it any more. There is no enjoyment whatsoever going to Molineux these days. I leave there after every game in a bad mood and completely dejected…… some of the time even if we’ve scraped an undeserved 1-0 or 2-1.
Muppett Mick needs to understand that a feel good factor and ‘CLUB SPIRIT’ is built from the top and filters into the stands. It is blatently obvious to all that the spirit in this team has been squashed by an egomaniac in the form of MM.
His decisions are quite frankly, pathetic. And also, to all that don’t know, our wonderful manager does not even give the team a talk before kick off, only at half time!!!

To be fair to Freddy, we havent seen enough of him to make an honest opinion…..
He might be no better than the other useless strikers at this club, but until he’s given the same chance that Keogh, Bothroyd, Elliot etc etc have been given we cant say.
I think the potential is there with Freddy.
WE shouldnt be happy with drawing with Blackpool, and how does MM expect any player to change a game when he’s brought on in stoppage time.

I’m all for constructive criticism. But so many of the posts on this blog deal out so much criticism so much of the time. McCarthy has made mistakes and has some obvious weaknesses, however, he did well last year and if some of the regulars return (Breen, Craddock, Kightly etc.) there is every chance of reaching a decent position. It just doesn’t get the club anywhere having this constant bilge thrown at them. Look at what it is doing to the players’ confidence and look at what it’s doing to Newcastle United.

60 and 65: It is obviously up to you to decide on whether to renew your season tickets. I shall renew mine, simply because I am a fan & and the continued support is vital if the club is ever to achieve what we all hope. This really shouldn´t, in my opinion, be clouded by the current issue of whether the manager should be sacked. I do of course not mean that you are any less fans than I am; this is just the way I see things.

When MM finally deigns to look at the table at the end of April he will find us ten points off the playoffs with three games left. You’ll have to get your wand out then ‘Merlin’. There are around ten clubs chasing just one playoff place as far as I can see (I look at the table all the time) and that will be claimed by the the team that can string together a run of five or six wins. The chances of that team being Wolves are precisely NIL. The biggest indictment of this current regime is that not one graduate of our acclaimed Acadamy has started a match this season. If that’s not going backwards, I don’t know what is.

The football at Wolves is dire at the moment but I still enjoy the afternoon/evening out. It isn’t just about them it’s about us the fans too, and what we enjoy.
I want them to get back to the top league not just for Wolves sake but because I enjoy football and the premier league is far more entertaining than the championship.
A club our size with the fan base we have got should not be in this position. I hope that Mr. Morgan can see that and he won’t let this rubbish carry on. If he does and brings real quality in, next season could be really exciting.

First things first the only wolves player i have ever hero worshipped is Peter Broadbent cos he was absolutely brilliant and maybe just maybe SGB, well yes SGB as well.
Now as for the we love/hate Freddie brigades, you cannot say whether he is good or bad because he hasn’t had a consistant run in the side to prove it one way or the other. Quite clearly the manager does not rate him and this has been proved by the fact that he has put all others before him, thats his choice and if he gets it wrong then he will be judged by his employers when the time is right. I’m no McCarthy fan I didn’t rate him as a player and I certainly did not rate him as a manager, but then again if I was the owner of WWFC I would not have employed him in the first place. But he is here and whether he stays or goes will not be down to me or any of you quite frankly and there ain’t much out there to choose from on the management merry go round at present. As for strike rates well, I seem to remember a certain John Richards getting an ultimatum some years ago by McGarry who said start scoring or be transferred, and a certain young man called Ian Rush was issued with the same and look what happened to them.
I don’t think promotion was ever on this year as the squad is too young and too inexperienced maybe in a years time this will change.
And please remember Brereton Wolf everybody is entitled to their opinion just because it differs from yours doesn’t mean they are wrong.

Paul Ince would have bloodied 3 or 4 of the academy graduates and by now some 18 months since he has left i’m sure we would have been in a far better situation if we had promoted Ince to 1st team player manager. We are struggling to score goals and one of Englands finest has offered his services for free and MM is such a dumb yorkshire idiot he has refused it.Our leading scorer has scored 7 goals such a joke aint it. Newbridge Wolf. - You need to take off your Pro McCarthy t-shirt and burn it! If you like to cast your mind back to Newcastle. When KK took over they were in a worst position then us. He kept them up, then following season he blitzed the league and got promototed. Mental Micky took over in the summer, built a team around exp and youth and had a marvellous season playing attack minded football. Stuff we aint seen down at the moli for years. BUT this season he has gone loop the loop and is trying to be a dictator to the team. Abit of pressure from a new owner basically outlining promotion obviously rattled him and he hasnt stepped up to the plate. HIs signing on the whole this season have been dreadful, his man management of some player are woeful. His backroom staff or Evans and Kunle havent really been replaced. Players playing out of position so on and so forth.
I hope that Paul Ince comes to the club. I honestly believe that with his reputation in the game, footballs bright new managers will ignite this club and do what Keano did for sunderland. Need to get rid of these ex-sunderland clique which has surfaced at the club as well as the MM favourites aka JB, S.Ward etc etc.

Hey! Im so far down this list ……….
I would like to mention 3 points:-
1. Progress.
A draw at Blackpool and being 4 points away from Playoffs instead of 2 is not progress in anybodys book! There is no doubt that a draw last night was first prize. A win would have been a bonus for Mick - not the mindset to make any progress up the league is it?
2. Freddie.
Freddie should not have shouted his mouth off to the press this week and then expect better treatment. I was surprised that MM put him on - even for 1 minute. Maybe Mick was also making a point to him? On Freddies side I also believe he hasnt been treated fairly but how can he prove himself in a few minutes at the end of a game. He needs a bit of luck - an injury early in the 2nd half maybe - but the odds are that MM would choose somebody else at the moment. Freddie bite the bullet and hope!
3. Defence.
I agree with those who have been crying for new defenders during the window but if MM is in need of any (and everybody says that he his) he can still get players using the injuries as an excuse but the clock is ticking and a new player needs time to fit in so I doubt this is now a viable option.
4. Playoffs
We can still make but the odds are against us based on some of the teams we still have to play and the amount of points needed. The teams above us only have a max of 4 points less to get and in the scheme of things 4 points is nothing. We CAN make it but its not looking good. Mick is a worried man - no doubt!!
AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO WIN THE FA CUP EITHER!!!!!!!!!

Back to my theme of SM, he has used this season as his “induction”. Now he will be confident of the changes he wants to make.
We have players to form the nucleus of a good squad. Clearly we have players who don’t. They will be gone.
Some central defenders as options to complement Breen’s experience (yes, he is important to the back 4.
An Ince/Rae charecter in midfield
and we can be challanging next year.

14 games left, about 31 points needed, I make that at least 9 wins if we draw another 4, i.e. losing only ONCE!! That’s a tall order so we need a turnaround and to go on one hell of a run.

To be fair, you cant blame MM for all of this, this is the last 30 years of decline. Most Wolves fans know this and we have to look at what is to be done to put it right. If you have a policy of taking young players from lower leagues, you must have the coaching staff to develop these players to the higher standard, if not, our club will end up in the lower league that these players came from. Just look at the mistakes made over the last 30 years, thats why we are the usual mid table again. How long can this go on ?

Stan Cullis retired from playing for the team and then next season he became the greatest manager we have ever had. Paul Ince has the potential to do the same.
He was known as the Boss when playing, he’ll run a tight ship. His footballing knowledge? Won everything, captained everything.
This is a chance to repeat the Cullis era, especially with Mr Morgan there to organize it.
Come on everybody, stop thinking small and back a *REAL* winner.

Would SM and JM be bothered if 18,000 became late birds this year?
Perhaps a few less millions of pounds in the cash flow column come mid March might focus attention on the action needed at the club.

Most, if not all the Early Birders WILL buy in our opinion regardless of what is said on here or any other football forum
MM in our view will be given until the end of the season as SM still believes that MM can get us into the play offs - so like it or not - MM will be the manager until the end of the season or we can no longer achieve a play off berth
As for Freddie Eastwood - If MM doesnt want him - why not sell him in the Jan window and bring in a couple/ one pacey centre half?
If we had someone with pace - we could try and get some balance in the back four ala Lescott and Butler days - Surely there are either possible loanees or a lower league player that we could bring in? Maybe Elokobi is meant for a centre half place? Somehow we doubt it!
The Freddiegate saga is getting really annoying as the weeks go by - More time spent on mishandling players can take focus away from where it should be - team morale and tactics
As for MM, everyteam has injuries - Its what and how the manager copes with it that shows how good the manager really is!
The FA Cup - great compatition but cant see a Championship team winning it - but if one of the big 4 win it maybe we could do a Milwall and be in europe next season? We can wish!
If we dont go up this season we believe that MM will be remembering his days at Sunderland somewhere else - Brentford perhaps - dont they have a similar looking football strip that is red and white stripes?

Classic comment, “Paul Ince would have bloodied 3 or 4 of the academy graduates and by now some 18 months since he has left i’m sure we would have been in a far better situation if we had promoted Ince to 1st team player manager”. He’s only managed a side in League TWO and took over a side destined to get promoted cos they already had the players and what happens when a big club comes in, Loyalty, forget it. MM has blooded O’Connor, Hennesey, Little, Gleeson and a few others, no disrespect to the players but only one can justify being in side now for his experience. Have a think about your “futuristic and out of space comments”!

Breretonwolf - FACT is Eastwood was banging in the goals and then MM decided he wasnt right to start…he scored for us, scored for wales and was on a high..since then he has never been given a run of games in the team.. as for leaving out Stephen Ward… pull out the fact of how many he scored last year? how many shots on target has he had? how many fans think he should play? an as for Keogh, he has got alot of support from the fans… do you actually go to the games or do you sit at home reading teletext working out your facts??
