Wolves boss: We can still do it

Mick McCarthyDefiant Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today insisted: “We are good enough to go up.”

The Molineux men dropped to 12th in the Championship table after Saturday’s defeat to Stoke, heaping more pressure on the manager ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Blackpool.

But, despite the run of defeats, Wolves remain only two points from the play-offs, and McCarthy insists they retain enough quality and belief to achieve the promotion dream.

“Are we good enough to get in the promotion shake up? Yes we are,” he said today.

“There are definitely things that need to be better – the defending over the last two games hasn’t been great. But we’re very much in that promotion shake-up.

“The automatic promotion places are still a realistic challenge for us and still one that we have to try

to get to. It gets harder the further we fall away from it, but we’ve still got to go for it.

“Some people might say I’m talking nonsense, but I hope nobody would expect us to give up on them until they are mathematically impossible.”

Saturday’s 4-2 defeat upped the stakes for tomorrow’s trip to Blackpool, with Wolves in need of a win to halt their losing run and re-ignite their stuttering play-off challenge.

McCarthy woke up yesterday to weekend tabloid reports claiming former Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is being lined up to take his job if he fails to lead Wolves into the play-offs.

But, despite the mounting pressure, the Wolves boss insists his relationship with owner Steve Morgan remains “fine”.

“Steve was fine after the game, I saw him in the boardroom as I do every week. He’s away for a couple of days now. But my relationship with Steve and Jez is fantastic – I have no problems there.”

McCarthy is choosing to emphasise the positives after the last two games, claiming Wolves didn’t deserve to lose heavily on Saturday.

“The players are disappointed with the way the things have gone in the last two games. We have actually played well in those games – it’s not like we’ve been trounced, despite what the scorelines would suggest,” he said.

STILL GOOD ENOUGH TO GO UP!!! MM you are kidding yourself. The defence is a disgrace, why did you waste money on yet another striker when we are crying out for a central defender. All four goals on saturday were down to mistakes. I have stood up for you until now but enough is enough, go now so we can start re-building for next season. It’s amazing to think that we are only 2 points from the playoffs even when our form as of late has been so poor (with the exception of scunny, sheff weds was a little lucky).
We have got something like 10 points from a possible 32 which is relegation form. Remember a few months ago when Glenn Roeder took over norwich 2nd from bottom and we were sitting pretty near the top, now norwich are only 2 points behind us so there still in the hunt to.
We need to put a few wins together and sharpish. MM should have till the end of the season no matter what, he now has his own squad of players and should be judged on that at the end of the season.
My optimism is fading fast though.

One of the most insightful things you’ve said this year Mick.

I think we have a squad capable of a playoff spot. I don’t however think we are making the best of them and it’s obvious where the weak link is.

After witnessing us get turned over by an overrated team like Stoke on Saturday, I wouldn’t bank on it Mick.

Our team lacks the individuals willing to shoulder responsibiliy and just get stuck in or have a punt at goal, I’m afraid they are too inexperienced, even the likes of Hull are playing better than us. With a 38 year old up front in Dean Windass, thats the difference, experience, we do not have it..Very dissapointing as I and many other fans thought this could be our season.

The Championship is such a poor league this season that of course Wolves still have a chance. The problem for any club promoted this season is that they are highly likely to come straight back down again.

Stoke’s fourth goal on saturday cam as the result of a stonewall penalty claim being turned down. Wolves were pushing for the equaliser & didn’t get the break they deserved.

In the post Saturday was Moxey`s early bird data. That set me up for my drive to the match from Nottingham. Good game, nice to see a well organised highly motivated side, with a good defence and making excellent use of dead ball plays, unfortunately it wasn`t Wolves. Who coaches our defenders? MM was a centre half - so no excuses, a bit of pace and athleticism and some proper defending we could have won 2-0, we didn`t - and won`t. The reality is 3 to a full strength watford, 4 to Stoke, we`ll be lucky to see the playoffs, then MM will be away, and I`ll try and find where I put the early bird letter.

I agree with MM that we should not give up until it is impossible to achieve and at the moment it is not impossible but it is no good the team playing good football which we did on Saturday, when we cannot defend. Our defence on Saturday must have gone to sleep. The goals they scored were purely our defences error.

I also agree that we should have had at least two penalties and the amount of times we were fouled and got nothing from the ref was unbelievable.

We have now started to score goals but we are letting too many in.

Wolfie are you on the same drugs as MM. WE CAN DO IT. Unless you are going to B&Q it. MM you are talking complete and utter rubbish. You are have lost the plot. I see Coventry have sacked Dowie. 35. Breretonwolf said:

Yes, let’s bring in big Sam. All we will need to do then is take the roof off each stand. We will need to do that, because we won’t see the ball with them on. It will be high in the air on the end of a defender’s boot. All we will need are 4 defenders and the seven strikers we have, as there is no need for midfileders in big Sam’s style of play. WHY DO YOU THINK NEWCASTLE GOT RID OF HIM?

Dowie would be a good choice. after all, he has just been sacked by Coventry. The reason? The websites quote “Incompetence” as the reason for the sacking. Coventry are hot on our heels in the league. (NOT!!!)

Coleman is free. Sacked by Fulham and Real sociedad in less than a year. He sounds ideal. We could have him here, and you could all boo him out before Christmas, and have yet another one in by the turn of the new year.

Of couse there is Paul Ince. A great ex-player for us, and definitely a good manager for the future. Not currently going through the best of times at the mighty MK Dons. Don’t get me wrong, Incey will be a good manager, but in my opinion, and yours might differ, not ready for the CCC yet.

Billy Davies was chased out of Derby, and they look like doing worse by far than the season you all love to quote for Mick at Sunderland. (Incidentally, Roy Keane has spent over £40 Million at Sunderland, and is still struggling in the lower reaches of the Prem. MM had nowhere near that amount to spend when he was there.)

I believe we should give Mick McCarthy this season and next to see if he can get the team of mainly youngsters up. If he can’t then he should maybe go. Does that mean I think he is the perfect manager? Of course not. He is like the rest of us, he has good and bad days. The idea of young and hungry will work long-term, I believe.

I disagree with both your postings:

    1) Stick with Mick! Why? I couldn’t care tuppence that we’re only 2 points off the play-offs. There’s “realistically” only one play-off place to play for and we’re hardly in pole position. We’re as near the bottom 2 as the top 2 and that’s where MM said we could and should be. He’s had one of the biggest cheque books in the division, great training facilities, massive goodwill and he’s still blown it! The team generally are rubbish and every single thing he’s quoted as saying is along the same lines!

Dowie’s gone, Robson will go later in the week and - in true Manchester bus tradition - MM should be the third!

    2) I watched Wolves in the early 70’s. As a kid, I could only see by sitting on a barrier. We had to get to the South Bank at 1.15 to be sure of a barrier and then during the game, every time there was a goal or close call, we’d be swept off and bundled down loads of concrete steps. Very safe and comfortable…not!

The other excitement was two lines of policemen keeping the peace and surges from away fans and back again. Running battles, things being thrown and no-one watching the game.If we go back to terraces, it won’t solve hooligan problems, it will make them worse!

You don’t reduce prices by making people stand….all seater stadia should keep the costs down! It’s greed and vain ambition that drive up prices whether you sit or stand up and I would want my young so to have a good view and be safe rather than endure the conditions I did!

Breretonwolf fully agree with your comments. Trouble is we have been saying for years about getting some young players in and letting them develop and then when we do we, wonder why they are inconsistant and ask for big money signings. Been there done that. Didnt work. Dont agree with every decision MM makes or even with every purchase he has made, but lets be fair, we are in a much better position for the future than we were before he came. Average age of team about 22, five 21 year olds in the starting line up…we CAN still be involved in the Play-Offs, because every one is capable of beating everyone else in the Chumpionship. Lets support the boys and sort the defence, with Kites and Craddock to return we can start to push on. Blackpool and Scunthorpe next two games, we could get good results there. Keep the faith, as hard as it is…

Have no problems with MM till the end of the season or until its mathematically impossible to get into the play offs

BUT even if we do make it by some stroke of luck etc etc

We dont believe that MM has what it takes to keep us in the Prem and this season has more than shown that MM seriously lacks in the tactics department

Steve Morgan would need to bring in fresh faces at the end of the season with or without promotion - as MM and Moxey are not what we consider a “winning formula” or for a better future for Wolves - as past seasons have shown Moxey as “Mr Average” and if all else fails - blame the fans!

It kept him in a job but hopefully SM will wield the axe and bring in his own people to move the club forwards!

As for MM - He stated Top 2 places this season - and Oh dear - It aint happening is it?

If we are lucky enough via play offs - great but win or lose - we really need a management team that knows what they are doing in the Prem with a modest budget to bring in Prem ready players

The past has seen a succession of managers come and go - and oodles of cash spent - surely this was not just down to the managers but a CEO who advised and acted on behalf of SJH and now SM

The only manager that achieved the “holy grail” (Dave Jones) and then didnt get sufficient backing due to an over cautious CEO who pocketd a profit as a result of promotion but did little for the clubs survival chances!

Not someone we would want to rely on in any campaign in the Prem!

So why hold on to the current CEO - who has a track record of failures in his tenure that far outweigh the success - that is fast becoming almost an embarressment to mention

Promotion or not - A BIG brush is now required and positive people with some proven backgrounds are required!!!

NB* We hope that SM is not restricted by the agreement that he struck between himself and SJH to acquire the club - as we seriously need improvement in all areas - commercially and on the field of play!

Poor old Sam Allardyce, 8 years at Bolton with a top six finish then almost handed the England job a few months at Newcastle, gets the sack and you’ve have rubbished him.

I’m not saying that he would be a good choice but I think the style of football that he chose to play was effective and has taken Bolton literally to the next league.

Your opinion of Sam or any of the others that you mention is purely subjective. Where as the majority that would like to see the back of McCarthy at least are basing their arguments on what they see in front of them every game!

It may be that McCarthy will do just as you say and turn things round. I think that he should be given time until it is impossible to reach the play off places and if he fails then should be shown the door.

I like big Sam but I feel that it may be time to bring in a manager who is young and hungry for success. We haven’t tried that root yet. But knowing Wolves, they would mess that up too!

Do you really think that MM will be given another season - come on!
What do you base your evidence on regarding Ince? Keane hadn’t managed in the championship before and he seems to be doing ok.

Do you wait for young managers to be snapped up by other championship clubs before you consider them or perhaps we should take a risk for once and change the record? At some point Wolves have to make an investment, to stay in the premier league you have to spend, if they had backed Dave Jones then we might still be there now?

You say that he will bring the youngsters on next season, I believe he is more likely to send them out on loan! I know for a fact he is still looking at strikers! Just how bad does it have to get?

As woeful as the season has been so far, a play off place is still a real possibility should Wolves be able to obtain the 25 or 26 points required from the last 15 games. We should of either spent big money on 2 quick central defenders who can use this year & next to gel together.

Instead the realisation will hit home at the end of the season when we have missed out again & then the defenders will be bought. TOO LATE!!!

The early bird season ticket deal for the long since deceased will be soon introduced with moxeys voice playing into the coffins telling us “WE CAN STILL DO IT”.Well Ive had enough and until the club shows some ambition and appoints a decent manager ,I wont renew my early bird

No. 46 Bridget & Tony - coudn’t agree any more very accurate and pesuasive comments. Wasn’t It our Mr Moxey who decided to keep Glenda before he walked out with no time to prepare for the new season. So this is a Chief Executive who knows exactly when to hire and fire and even after Hoddle left didn’t dear old Jez try to contact him to see if he woudn’t mind staying. The only reason for too many firings is because the appointment isn’t right in the first place.

And secondly all this talk about the penalties that should have been given totally misses the point. Wolves lost because of schoolboy defending as they did against Watford and the one conceded against Sheff Wed.

There is not a manager out there who will do better then MM for the remainder of the season with the players at his disposal.
MM has to have to the end of the season, only then can he be judged. He has entirely his own team/squad now and if he can’t deliver with that squad come May I am all for a new manager!

I suppose some of you are worried that he IS going to get us in the playoffs and maybe even promotion. You are more worried because you don’t think he is a premiership manager and we will do a “sunderland”.

We need defenders, amazing how Mark Little is playing terrific football at Northampton Town, just like Daniel Jones did. We need him back and then with luck Mick wil play then both. Ive seen both perform for Northampton and they honestly put our current full backs to shame.

Northampton’s Stuart Gray has faith in them, and reading about Northampton, its no coincidence they are unbeaten in the 5 games since Little arrived. Its time to give both these exceptionally talented full backs there place in the first team.

  104. Breretonwolf said:

Short-termism. We are not winning, so sack the manager. It’s worked so well in the past, so let’s continue with it.

I get accused of being a Mick McCarthy love child, a relative, or even Mick himself. I can see Mick McCarthy’s faults as well as you can. The defence needs sorting, but how unlucky to lose the experienced defenders, Craddock and Breen at the same time? When you do have a young side it is a must that you have a few experienced heads to temper the naivety of younger players. Breen and Craddock would be that. Where better to have that than at the back, where the experienced players can see what is happening, and direct the youth. (They don’t need the legs to bomb around everywhere. They need a brain that sees things, and get the players with legs to do the running. We lost both long-term, and at the same time.) It does not take intelligence to knock everything you see. If you are going to knock, let’s at least see sensible suggestions that need to happen on the field for sorting the problems. I don’t notice the cheap shot merchants, Sue D’Nimm, etc giving solutions. They sit there sniping at others, but offer nothing other than “play Freddy” or “sack Mick.” Cheap shots are a way of hiding any real understanding. All you have to do is suggest that people are “relatives of Mick,” or “don’t know what they are talking about.” The sheep will do the rest. Abdonwolf and I don’t always agree, but at least he does talk football, and gives arguments for his beliefs. I can respect people like that.

What I can’t go for is the short-termism that keeps us thinking that changing managers every couple of years is the way forward. The successful teams don’t change managers like changing their socks. Alex Ferguson (no I am not saying MM is in the same league as him) took seven years to win a title with man Utd. They were going to get rid of him (fan “power”) if they lost a cup game to Forest. They stuck with him, and voila, they start winning. Dave Jones got us to the Prem, and was sacked half a season or less after us coming down. Why? The boo boys again. He was sacked way too soon. Graham Tayler was sacked. Why? The same boo boys who say to play the young players coming through the academy. Taylor was the manager that really started the academy. The list goes on. (and on and on…) We have a manager that has said it would take three years to get us up with going for youth. We can’t play them all, so he sends those he considers not yet ready to lower leagues for experience. Jones and Little have done well at Northampton, and will be used when they are ready. There is a big gulf though between Northampton and the Championship. We have to ewean young players in. If you have a baby (and my wife and I have had six) you don’t give him or her solids straight away. You progress the food gradually. That is what McCarthy wants to do with these young players. I may be a mindless idiot hwen compared with “super brains” like Sue D’Nimm, (Stifled laughter) but I do try to look at things long-term. I just don’t see that we would be well-served by getting rid of MM now. What happens if he goes now? Someone else comes in with a new idea, and we are back at square one. Give them six months, and the boo-boys will start on them. (Yes, even Incey if he had a bad run. (I do believe he is one for the future. So was Bryan Robson at Middlesborough.)

105, I’m a Wolves fan. I will watch them wherever and whenever they play. Some folks believe I am blind, but I see the faults. The way to overcome faults is consistency, and perseverance, not changing manager after manager. Each manager brings a new style, so you are back to square one each time. (It’s called a paradigm shift in business terms. “When a paradigm shift occurs, everything reverts to zero.”)

  111. Steve Bull Stand said:

Brereton I agree that changing a manager every time the club has a bad run is not a good idea. It is also not a good idea to stick with a manager that is taking the club in the wrong direction.

McCarthy did a really good short term job to take Wolves to the play offs after they had lost so many key players. He also did a good job for one season at Sunderland. But there are no indications he has what it takes to lead Wolves to the next level.

Wolves have struggled to score goals for 18 months now, that is not a short term problem. He signed Eastwood to solve the problem then dropped him after he had scored 4 goals in three games. Recently Keogh has finally started scoring so he has moved him to the wing. Now he is playing a new striker who averages one goal every 11 games in his career.

Defensively we have a good record under McCarthy but only because we usually set up the midfield to focus on protecting the defence rather than supporting the attack and being creative. This has lead to very poor entertainment this season. Recently his team selections have been more positive and the frailties of the defence are there for all to see. The fact that we are desperate for Craddock and Breen to return shows the lack of progress we have made in strengthening the defence.

We have now won 2 out of our last 13 league games. That is on a par with Scunthorpe and worse than Colchester. Am I really having too high expectations to say we should be doing better than these teams?

To me there is no question that this club needs a bright new manager who can take the club forward in a way that leaves us with a chance of staying in the Premier League when we get there. Anyone who went to Blackpool the other night will tell you that if by some miracle we go up this year then we will be no better than Derby in the Premier League. And McCarthy was happy with the performance and saw it as Wolves making progress!
