A motorcyclist was today fighting for his life after crashing into a lamp post just yards from a hospital, the day before his birthday.
The man, who was due to celebrate his 26th birthday tomorrow, lost control of his 125cc bike in Walsall in the early hours and suffered serious head injuries.
He has been sedated for the critical first 24 hours and is being treated in the intensive care unit at Walsall Manor Hospital.
The man was riding along Blay Avenue, in Alumwell, in the direction of the hospital when the accident happened at around 1.10am.
Initial reports suggest he lost control on the bend, where the road meets Southbourne Avenue. He was rushed by ambulance to the nearby hospital and police were called to the scene.
Walsall Police closed the stretch for around two hours while investigations were carried out. Inspector Don Taggart appealed for witnesses. He added: “I would urge motorists and motorcyclists to take extra care on the roads in these wintry conditions.”
