Icy weather caused the cancellation of several competitions and also reduced catch weights – but there were no complaints in the third round of the FMS league fixture.
This took place on the Staffs Worcester canal at Hazelstrine and Walton near Stafford where Fred Bedford topped the catch weights with 8-6-0.
The Fox Tipton VDE team man drew a peg opposite the old boat turning bay where he caught roach, perch and gudgeon with bloodworms.
Two pegs away was
Top team on the day were Sensas North West Green with 49 points over Team Eclipse 44, Isaac Walton A A 43, Pickerings 42 and Shakespeare 39.
Current league places are Shakespeare 8 points, Fox Match Tipton VDE 10, Isaac Walton A A and Sensas North West Green both 15 and Mohmar, W B Clarke and Eclipse 18.
• Catches were very poor in the Bilston Angling’s latest open fixture which took place on the Staffs Worcester canal at Tettenhall.
Although pegs were placed in the shelter of the opposite Wolverhampton Wanderers’ training ground, usually a very productive area, a mere 3-2-8 topped the result sheet.
The catch of small perch was taken by Colin Davies (Bilston) who used bloodworms offered under the far bank.
His travelling partner Ray Large was second with 2-1-8, again all perch on bloodworms while Bert Simmill (Brittons Tackle) was third with 1-0-9 from the same area.
Also in the frame were Joe Cottrell (Black Country Tackle) 0-9-8, John Hall (Bilston Angling) 0-8-8 and Phil Taylor (Bilston Angling) 0-7-5.
• Veteran Eclipse A C team member Fred Cheetham hung on to his lead in the Stafford Individual Aggregate league despite finishing in sixth place along the Shropshire Union canal at Little Onn.
In very cold weather there were quite a few dry nets but Aldridge based Graham Smith (Lazy Hill A C) recorded a respectable on the day, 4-1-8 top catch.
Drawn at a peg on the Goodyear AC’s controlled section next to Little Onn bridge, he hooked roach and perch plus odd small chub with squatt maggots.
Stan Ward’s (Bilston Angling) 3-0-10 second best bag consisted of five perch for 3-0-10 and he was chased by Tony Keeling (Eclipse) 1-10-8, Dennis Kneller ( W B Clarke) 1-9-12, Fred Cheetham (Eclipse) 1-9-0 and James Egerton (Isaac Walton, Stafford) 1-0-8.
Current league placings with four more matches to go are, Fred Cheetham 6 points, James Egerton 9 and Tony Keeling 12.
• Despite selecting the best areas of the Birmingham Fazeley canal at Curdworth catches were very poor in the Stirrup Cup A C’s open fixture.
Indeed, a mere 2-4-10 bag ensured that Birmingham-based Brian Jarvis collected the winner’s purse.
Drawn at peg number 12 at the bottom of the length he tried every trick in the book but all he caught were a few perch the best of which weighed 1lb 8oz. He attracted them with worms.
Charlie Alabaster (Stirrup Cup) was second from a peg at the opposite end where he sorted out a few small roach with squatt and pinkie maggots. Gordon Massey (Dams & Lock) 1-11-11 and Alan Ward (Stirrup cup) 1-1-4 completed the frame.
• Unlucky for some peg 13 produced a 67-8-0 winner for Steve Norris (TRAC A C) in the latest round of the Heronbrook Individual winter league.
The match was held on four pools, the Canal, Bridge, Island and Meadow and it was the latter which yielded the catch. This consisted of nine carp caught with a variety of baits.
Second man Neal Machin’s, again (TRAC), 61-6-0 also came from the Meadow while Rob Pellings (Guilder’s Tackle) third best 59-6-0 and Dan Hallam’s (Garbolino) 52-3-0 came from the Island and Bridge pools.
Current league places are Steve Carrier and Andy Moors both six points and Keith Hassall, Dan hallow and Ken Oldham each seven.
